From the end of the eleventh century and into the thirteenth century, a series of holy wars known as the Crusades were launched. There were nine crusades, the first of which Urban II issued in 1097 to gain control of Jerusalem, the Holy Land. (io) Which had been until then under Muslim command. The reason behind the Crusades was because Muslims and Christians both wanted control over Jerusalem. For Muslims, it was important because their founder, Muhammad, had risen to heaven from Jerusalem. While for Christians it was important because Jesus had spent the majority of his life there. (io) These crusades showed the power of the church during medieval Europe. People went on these crusades because they believed that “God wills it.” (io) The effects that the Crusades had on Western Europe were both positive and negative.

The positive effects of the crusades were that it allowed for the growth in trade, towns, and education in medieval Europe. (io) The trade routes that developed during the crusades continued as it was profitable and brought a variety of goods that included sugar, cotton, rice, and cloth. Because the crusades weren’t effective or successful. Europeans began to grow resentful and support declined. (doc.6) Another negative effect was that crusaders were brutally mistreated many people by the local population that they passed. Which created hatred and animosity towards the Christians. (doc.7) During the crusades, it also resulted in both Muslims and Christians to commit awful acts of violence against each other. (doc.1) During the fourth crusade, they invaded Constantinople, destroying historic artifacts and in doing so part of its culture. This also further divided the Latin and Greek Christian churches which they had initially wanted to reunite.
