Ethical standards are very high in the United States Armed forces now and always have been. As I enlisted in the military over 23 years ago, one of the first things we learned was about ethical and moral standards within the military. The military employs millions of people to include civilians a robust code of ethics must be followed by everyone. Ethics drives the military when performing in both peacetime and when the country is at war. A breakdown in ethical performance can cause individuals to perform poorly and even affect their larger units. I have personally seen a lack of concern for ethics bring an end to a Soldiers career. The military is established in a way that civilians actually control it and fund it through the government. The House of Representatives and the Senate sends a bill annually to the President of the United States (POTUS) recommending funding be approved for all services. The stakeholders overall include the POTUS, Congress, military senior leaders and the American people who fund the military through tax dollars. Senior military leaders must carry out the orders of the POTUS in a professional manner at all times. Under the POTUS sits the Secretary of Defense, which insures all the services treat their employees fair across the board. Under the Secretary of Defense, each branch of service has their own Secretary that is responsible for the implementation of all rules and regulations. Modern Army Leaders face an ethical dilemma, specifically in low-density Military Occupational Specialties, of completing the mission and enforcing the standards of Army Regulation 600-9. Units deploying or conducting critical training need Soldiers or pilots holding crucial skills. These Soldiers must comply with the body composition standards outlined in the regulation. The reason behind this involves the chain of command and the risk to life and limb that are such large parts of military life. When a soldier in the Army has no ethics, he or she can cause trust and respect problems with other members of his or her unit. The US military is a stressful organization for most people involved with it, and people's lives are on the line frequently. Issues like PTSD and other medical problems are commonplace for those who leave the military and must adjust to civilian life, so it is very important that those who are in the Army work with their colleagues and higher-ups to get the help and support they need during and after their service. There is more to ethics in the Army than the problems that military individuals can face, though.
While these three points are extensively discussed and dissected, it is apparent that the key factor that makes us professionals is the ethical standard that we must hold every individual soldier, from the lowest private to the highest general, to. Self discipline in the military is where soldiers do the 4 rights without being told, even in the absence of the commander. Discipline is created within a unit by instilling a sense of confidence and responsibility in each individual.
