In the financial part of military health care, things can get a little frustrating. Military health care now is one of the best health cares you can have not, but in the past it has had its flaws. The health care now has a really good strength, good insurance/doctors, and it is not too bad for having to spend money. On the other part the military health care also had problems with people moving, doctor’s, money, and stress on the family. Nowadays people do not have to pay as much if people have military health. Whenever people go to the doctor the co-pay and bills for the medicine is not expensive. Also if someone is retired or being disabled that person will receive a check. The spouse staying back with the children can be worried about what is all going on overseas. The spouses staying at home will have to worry about if there other significant other is going to come home. From stressing out and being depressed this will cause the parent staying at home can have sudden mood changes. Having depression the spouse will have to go to the doctor to make sure everything in their body is going right, because they might not be eating from this. The spouse at the new house will start to miss home where their family lives. The children will also be asking where did their daddy or mommy go and it can also cause the spouse to become more upset. Having to go to the doctor for depression and paying medicine for it can cause even more stress on trying to pay everything. TRICARE is formerly known as the Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Uniformed Services (CHAMPUS), and is a health care program of the US Department of Defense Military Health System. Following WWII and the Korean War, access to care in military facilities became less available by civilians and active-duty personnel due to a lack of resources, or a constraint of them, and growing demands on the system, and “space-available basis” was first addressed. As a solution, Congress passed the Dependents Medical Care Act in 1956 and the Military Medical Benefits Amendments in 1966. Such acts allowed the Secretary of Defense to work with civilian health care providers and contract their services. This health civilian health care program became known as the CHAMPUS in 1966. TRICARE Standard - With this healthcare coverage that is provided with military service, this is the best option that provides people with the most flexibility. If qualified, one can see any doctor that they would like whom is a TRICARE provider. One down fall is that active duty members are not allowed to receive this insurance but this is available to anyone in the U.S. . For the standard plan, one does not have to pay as long as one is considered eligible and enlisted in the DEERS list.
Many people would likely disagree that service members should be better compensated. Some have voiced the concern because it is a volunteer military that the benefits of free medical and dental benefits, tuition assistance programs, free travel and free meals and housing for service members is all the benefit necessary for serving. Military medical personnel are among the best in their fields. With ever major medical specialty available military service members have access to some of the most comparable health care facilities in the country including the Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, MD and the much-acclaimed Walter Reed Army Medical Center located in Silver Spring, MD. Service members have the opportunity to travel for free to places many people dream of ever being able to see. The GI Bill provides a financial support for service members to achieve the post secondary educations and while serving on active duty personnel can take college courses at little or no cost to them. In short many of today's private-sector companies can hardly compare what the offer the employees what the government offers those serving.
According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook members of the U.S military, service maintains the U.S. national defense. The military is made up of enlisted and officer careers. They work with hi-tech machinery to help in the field. People in the military wear uniforms that show their ranks by badges. This job is so important because without the military people would be in danger and lives might not be saved.
Deployments are a difficult time for military families. Deployment of a loved one affects the whole family. The service member may worry about how his family may fare without him or even miss milestones in his children’s lives. The spouse has to function as a single parent and take on responsibilities left behind by the service member. The children may suffer from behavioral problems and not adjust well to having a parent deployed.
The U.S. spends more money on health care than any other country in the world, yet most Americans do no receive adequate health care. Many factors have contributed to this problem. One major factor is cost. The price of health care has risen tremendously in the previous years and is expected to continue to rise in the years to come.
Quite a few of them must also cope with having a parent who returns from duty profoundly changed by what went on overseas. Children's reactions to a parent's deployment may differ by child, and more broadly, by a child's developmental stage, age, and presence of any pre existing mental or behavioral issues. Children of very young age may exhibit separation anxiety, temper tantrums, and bad eating habits. Kids who are in school during their parent’s deployment sometimes experience a decline in academic performance. They can also have mood changes and physical complaints. Children in the adolescent stage may act out and become angry, or become distant and show signs of apathy. In young children ages 3-8, the mental health of the at-home parent is often a key factor affecting the child's distress level. If the parent is noticeably stressed and emotionally unstable it will then start to affect the child at a more higher risk of having psychological and behavioral problems. Patricia A. Resick et al. (May 4, 2015) conducted a randomized clinical trial experiment on Active Duty Military personnel. By Group Cognitive Processing Therapy compared with Group Present- Centered Therapy for PTSD. To see if active military personal improve stress symptoms with group therapy and if focus treatment is more effective on the PCT. The results stated that the experiments had a large effect in the PTSD reducing stress and in focus treatment (CPT-PC) it had a higher/greater effect. This is important because PTSD is a severe problem in the military force in which this experiment got rid of the stress that military people in Fort Hood were feeling like when active military personal were returning from deployment in Iraq or Afghanistan.
There have been enormous changes in healthcare throughout time. Some were extremely good and some were not so good. Depending on the year, your ethnicity and social status, the healthcare you received was either top notch or seriously lacking. I sat down with three different people from three different generations and probed their brains about healthcare they received through-out their lives. We will see what the differences are from the 1930’s to 2015, and compare them to see how much difference eighty-two years made.
Besides gaining intrinsic satisfaction from serving courageous service members and their families, I believe military medicine would offer me enormous opportunities to be a well-rounded physician. Military medicine will prepare me with the knowledge as well as the skill sets that allow me to provide care under extreme circumstances and limited resources. Beyond practicing medicine, military life allows me to develop interpersonal skills while providing service in widely diverse communities without geographical constrains. My prior military experiences push me beyond my personal limits and shape me into a mature and dependable person, which play a huge part of who I am today.
