Military Uniform and Appearance

The Army in an extremely nostalgic organization with a copious amount traditions and has about a million different methods of conducting its business. Some are old and some are new, but possibly the oldest one that has been around since before the Army was officially established and still lives today is the Armys rules, regulations and policies on customs and courtesies. In this form of a remedial block of instruction given to me by my team leader, due to certain circumstances I am to explain the Armys customs and courtesies and the importance they have always and still do hold within the Army.

Uniform specifications, by which each member must abide, emphasize regularity cohesion group cooperation and solidarity. The many different branches have many different regulations for different uniforms . Uniform specifications are designed to maintain the uniform's functionality in the line of duty. Uniforms that fail to conform to the set standards could interfere with a service member's ability to perform his duty. For example, a cold-weather uniform that's not actually adapted to the cold according to official specifications could pose a risk to that soldier's well-being in the field.These standards have been proven over time and ensure the safety of the soldier . The person wearing the uniform should look neat and concise not drawing attention to themselves. There are many army regulations dealing with the army but the one that I am going to talk about today is army regulation 670-1. What is army regulation 670-1 covering in the United states army? Army Regulation 670-1 deals with the wear and appearance of military uniforms for my paper I will recite the way a person is supposed to wear their uniform in army text and then tell you what it means in my own words. Starting with the parts that deals with the reason I am writing this report right now.

These are important to all soldiers, as this is what the citizens of not only the United States of the America judge us from, but also most of the world judges our nation based soley on the individuals of the Army. Since we as a group are split all across the world, many people see us each and everyday. Some countries only see Americans through the soldiers they see everyday. We represent the pride and honor of the American nation, and without following the rules and regulations that govern these common courtisies and appearance we do nothing but fail at our duty, and let down the American people. Marine Corps customs and courtesies are very important to the way the Marine Corps works. They are intended to reinforce discipline and the chain of command, showing how Marines will treat their superiors. They also enhance esprit de corps and unity. This is what makes the Marine Corps the brotherhood that it has become.

They have other regulations on it but it honestly doesn’t apply to me. They have an order on long hair too. It basically says that long hair will be neatly and inconspicuously fastened or pinned, except that bangs may be worn. The regulations for the wear of bangs detailed above are relevant. No portion of the bulk of the hair, as measured from the scalp, will exceed approximately 2 inches, except a bun, which may extend a maximum of 3 inches from the scalp, and no wider than the width of the head. Some females obviously disregard this order but that is on them. On to the face. The marine corps allows male marines to grow facial hair, but only in the form of a moustache. The perfect moustache for the military, believe it or not, is the Hitlerstache. It does not state that in the order specifically, but the order does state that the moustache has to be neatly trimmed. The individual length of a mustache hair fully extended must not exceed one half of an inch. I have always head it has to be one eighth of an inch above the lip and below the nose and can not exceed the sides of his lips, but when I looked up the order, I did not see that mentioned anywhere. The rest of a male marines face has to be clean shaven at all times, unless determined by a medical officer to be dangerous to the marine’s health. We are put on a higher pedestal than civilians at all times. We are to behave in a different manner than anybody. We are to at all times conduct ourselves in ways that most people would not understand. The rules and regulations are put out so that we know what we can and cannot do at all times. We are to behave at all times in a professional manner and dress properly.

It’s important to wear to army uniform correctly because the habits you do while you are home in a safe environment will continue when you deploy. Whenever you go on a mission you should always double and triple check yourself to make sure you have the right equipment. To make sure you are not missing the little things like you camel bag, or even the big things like you weapon. That’s why it’s important to always check yourself in the mirror before you leave. Not only to check you have the right things but also to make sure everything is in the right place, looking how it should. As a Marine, you should never wear a complete outfit of one color. It is not aloud by the marine corps order. Hats are to be worn forward or back. not sideways, tilted in an angel, or worn in any other direction, and are to be removed when walking inside a building, same as your sun glasses. Head phones are not permited to be on while in a building of any military issued clothing. Marine corps order also has rules for its PT outfits, from rainbow to required green on green, and the three variations of it. The marine corps regulated and given uniform is the green on green. green shorts, green shirt, white socks, and a pair of running shoes. One of the variations is a green sweat top, as well as a green sweat bottoms. The last one is called the running suit. You ust wear both of these over green on green, and still have white ankle high socks. Now that covers the issued uniform.
