Minor Characters In Jack London's To Build A Fire

In the short story “To Build a Fire”, written by Jack London, he uses minor characters, like the “big, native husky, the proper wolf dog” (London 598) , as a way to give the readers more insight to the true message of the story. Throughout the story, the dog is present in all of the misfortunes that the unnamed man encounters. These events help show the true message of the story, which is that in the conflict between man and nature, nature triumphs. The thoughts the man has in the duration of the story tells the reader about the type of personality he has and how the dog plays a role in the events that occur. The temperature is just one way in which the dog’s instincts are more helpful than the man’s knowledge. In addition to the dog having a gut instinct based on temperature, it also has the intelligence to know that certain parts of the wilderness are worse than others. Traveling in the tundra is considerably dangerous, if one is ill-equipped, like the unnamed man was. The landscape of the Yukon trail proves to be just as dangerous and the man uses the dog, against its will to prove this. “... he compelled the dog to go on in front. The dog did not want to go. It hung back until the man shoved it forward, and then it went quickly across the white, unbroken surface. Suddenly it broke through, floundered to one side, and got firmer footing” (London 601). This quote provides evidence that the man was too stubborn to go out and test the frozen lake on his own. The dog, knowing that the lake was a dangerous option, did not come right away when the man called. Thus further proving how the dog’s instinct is better than the man’s judgement.
