The next day very early in the moring Ty'ree was waking up Lafayette because he got a call from the police station saying that Charlie had gotten in trouble. Once Lafayette woke up he quickly put on his clothes and left for the police station with his brother. When they got there it was lights everywhere and the place had negative energy and also a bad smell. There were large desks with people behind them which you could barely see. They heard a woman say Charlie's name and they walked fast. Once Ty'ree saw Charlie he started to run down the hall now. When Lafayette saw Charlie he felt like he was about to faint. Charlie was sitting on a bench curled up into a corner like he wanted to disappear. His lip was busted and one of his eyes was swollen completely shut. His hands were trembling like he was cold. The right one was cut and swollen big as a bear paw. Lafayette bit his bottem lip while
To begin, three brothers, Lafayette, Charlie, and Ty’ree were orphaned due to the tragic death of their parents. Over the course of two days, Lafayette (the narrator) includes flashbacks to earlier events. After spending over two years in Rahway Home for Boys, a juvenile detention center, Charlie recently returned home. Watching Charlie get ready to leave the apartment with his new friend Aaron, Lafayette laments the changes that have become apparent in his brothers actions since he came home. Once, Charlie was the kind of kid who would stay up late telling stories to his younger brother. And who had cried over a wounded dog, he saw on the street. Now, he barely even looks at or speaks to Lafayette, and he usually denies feeling anything at all. Charlie seems to prefer spending time with tough characters such as Aaron and acting tough in the streets. Lafayette has even taken to
In the book The Outsiders by S.E Hinton, it's built around the class division between the Socs and the greasers. The kids in the Socs came from privileged and wealthy families while the greaser grew up in a unstable and poor environment, and it shaped who they are and how they act. The novel deals with issues important to urban teens, and the obstacles that are part of their daily lives, showing realism in Hinton's writing. In the article ¨The Urban Experience in Recent Young Adult Novels¨ by Sandra Hassell and Sandy Guild, it discuss the importance of urban teens worlds represented in literature. The article consists of many characteristics that are established in urban youth books such as, the usage of slang, strong sense of community,

Energy is one of the single most important concepts to keep in mind when writing, it can make even the most insignificant occurrences interesting. Energy plays with the reader’s senses combining subject matter, leaps/ spacing and words into one to create a fascinating piece of work. “Good writers choose a topic they know a lot about—relationships, travel, growing up, bedrooms, hotels, restaurants, the synagogue on 42nd Street—and they trust that they will discover things about the topic as they work.” (Sellers 71) Rick Moody author of “Boys” has taken a relatable topic the process of growing up and has turned a thirty year frame into a condensed
The Outsiders is a book about two gangs who are continuously fight each other and are at war. This book has many lessons you can learn from it. Along with all these lessons are quotes and this one is the one I like the best.”16 years on the street you can learn a lot, but not the thing you want to learn.” this this quote applies to Dally, Darry, and Johnny.
Have you read this book because it's good for philosophical chairs ,and essays. This book was wrote by S.E Hinton and most complainants is that if Ponyboy ethier should go to the system,or should stay with Darry. And Pony should stay with Darry.
John Boyne has created a sophisticated and meaningful novel in The Boy in the Striped
Ordinary courage is a book that tells the story of an ordinary man who is inlisted in the continental army in the revolutionary war. Joseph Plumb Martin is the young man fighting in this war, at the time he entered he was just a mere 16 year old kid but by the time his time in the continental army was up he became a man. This is a first person memoir of what it was like for a regular person living in a war zone, and dealing with the everyday fears of food shortage, low morale, and danger of attack. This is something that many people in todays world could not handle because even some of the old guys in the
“In an age when Americans enjoy dozens of cable sports channels, when professional athletes often command salaries in the tens of millions of dollars...it’s hard to fully appreciate how important the rising prominence of the University of Washington’s crew was to the people of Seattle in 1935” (Brown 173). As seen by this quote, America is a much different place than what it was in the 1930s. The times have changed significantly. In today’s day and age we have it all too good. The world we live in is one of leisure and not nearly as much hard work as there used to be. Back in the early 20th century the people had it pretty rough and dealt with many frightening problems of their generation such as
What do we learn about life in the 18th century and how successfully does the writer convey this information whilst telling us a good story?
Fear is inevitably tied to the common saying “I am watching you”. When one’s actions are constantly monitored and privacy being relentlessly invaded, the individual soon will possess a sort of fear. In the novel Little Brother by Cory Doctorow, the government uses surveillance as a tool for exploiting the privacy of the people which then engages their fear.
In the book The Age of Miracles by Karen Thomson Walker, the world was ending because the rotation of the Earth was slowing at an unnatural and fast pace. This caused many events to occur such as radiation, sickness, natural disasters, and much more leading to the inevitable doom of the human species. The end of the world gave people the idea to send a disk into outer space containing the history of the human species as well as the human experience. War would be a vital aspect found on this disk, as the developments of weapons throughout humanity as well as unity throughout the world have been big parts of human history. Culture throughout the world has also been a big part of the human experience, as cultural experiences such as religion
The story picks back up in the last few chapters when tensions rise during the excitement of the game. These last few chapters really focus on the implications of the game at hand and the potential outcomes. Coffey stresses that so much is on the line, the players feel it, the fans feel it and their countries feel it. Mike Eurizone became the player that broke the 3-3 tie with 10 minutes left in the last period. Coffey does a great job at pointing out that even though the Americans took the 4-3 lead, 10 minutes was a ton of time left in the game. Eventually time runs out and the amateurs had beaten the greatest team ever. The important thing to know, and is established in the last paragraph is that USA still had to beat Sweden in the gold
Mariano Azuela's The Underdogs tells the story of a dauntless Indian farmer who almost unintentionally rises to a generalship in Pancho Villa's rebel army during the Mexican Revolution of 1910. Though the events that occur throughout the book are not actual events that took place during the revolution, Azuela is able to paint a very realistic picture of the revolution and leaves a bitter taste in the mouth of the reader as one witnesses the failure of the rebels. This novel is a great teaching tool that reveals truths of the revolution that would not have been given justice through the traditional historical scholarship. Through fictional characters, Azuela's The Underdogs
