Feminist of today are considered third-wave feminists, which focus on abolishing gender roles through the actions of assertiveness, power and control of their own sexuality. At first glance, Games of Thrones appears to be nothing more than mansanstic fantasy. Everywhere in the show women are hypersexualized and casted into their predisposed gender roles. In the first season every episode follows this trends, of men holding all the power in society and women being objects. Women were only presented to demonstrate the power of men or sex. Under the constant oppression of a society dominated by men, the women of the Seven Kingdoms have risen from their oppression and slowly began taking over power in the sixth season. From Daenerys Targaryen conquering city after city to Sansa reclaiming the North, the women of Game of Thrones are breaking through their gender confinements. The female characters, Daenerys Targaryen, Brienne of Tarth and Sansa Stark, in Game of Thrones represent modern day feminism and hold more power than men.
Daenerys Targaryen demonstrates modern day feminism by holding more power than any man in the Seven Kingdoms. At the beginning of the series, Daenerys was forced into marriage with Khal Drogo, the leader of the Dothraki, by her brother in order to gain a political alliance for him. The Dothraki are notoriously known savages who treat all women as sexual property. During her time as Khal Drogo’s wife she was oppressed and forced into a role of political
1. Why did Cato object to repealing the Oppian law? What was the basis of his objections?
Throughout the history of society, women and men both have faced the constricting roles forced upon them, from a young age; each gender is given specific social and cultural roles to play out throughout their lives. Little girls are given dolls and kitchen toys, little boys are given dinosaurs and power tool toys, if one was to step out of this specified role, social conflict would ensue. Contrast to popular belief, sex is a biological construct, and gender is a social construct specifying the roles men and women are to follow to be accepted into society as “normal”. The effects of gender roles have had on women have proved harmful over the decades. Although the woman’s involvement in society has improved throughout the decades,
In this session, I will discuss the gender roles in my family. The definition of gender role is the degree to which a person adopts the gender-specific behaviors ascribed by his or her culture (Matsumoto, D. R., & Juang 2013, 156). For example, traditional gender roles recommend that males are aggressive, angry, and unemotional. It goes further and explains that the male should leave the home every day to make a living and be the main wage earner. The traditional gender role for the female purpose is to stay at home and care for the children. It explains that the female is to be nurturing, caring, and emotional (Matsumoto, D. R., & Juang 2013, 156). These traditional roles for female and male are the opposite of one another. It is believed that the culture is likely to influence our perception about gender role in a family. In my family, my parents utilize the traditional gender role. Growing up, my father went to work every day and my mother stayed home with me and my sister. I believe my parents were influence by their parents and their culture to be traditional gender role parents. My father explained to me that they chose traditional parenting role because both sides of the family utilized traditional parenting gender roles. I believe my parents felt pressure to obtain the gender roles of the mother staying home with the children while the father worked. However, when my younger sister was old enough to go to school, my mother started to work. It was believed that when
Despite the fact that the women were almost treated as "slave," the men were almost treated as "king" in the eighth-teen century. Likewise, in Beowulf's story, Wealhtheow, who is the queen of Hrothgar, devoted herself to honor and benefits Hrothgar as his wife. Even though She was honored and dignified character,
And not only that, they serve the use of being beaten, when something troubles the men, or just because they are woman and their wives. "Harpo ast his daddy why he beat me. Mr._______ say, because she my wife. Plus, she stubborn." (pg. 23). Mr. _______, says this to convince his son that women serve no use in this planet other than to work, have babies, and be beaten. Harpo, following his father's example and Celie's advice for Harpo to make Sofia mind, goes on to beat Sofia. Sofia's response is unexpected. Harpo thought that Sofia was going to act as Celie did with Mr. _____. Yet this strong woman, beat Harpo, who is a weak character. Harpo continues to try to make Sofia mind about his superiority, but she does not want to undergo all these problems any more, and decides to leave Harpo and seek for a better life. This is a true and big example of her fight for equality, or superiority of the female gender in the world. As Harpo does not understand that a couple can live happily without violence, Sofia runs away.
A "woman is dainty, neither wears dresses or fusses with her hair; they are masculine and imposing. Even their physical appearance belies strength and action, and they deftly navigate, embrace, and wield all that belongs to the male hero's world. (Bro, 2016, p64) How this has been represented in during the game of thrones when she is telling the story about how she used to call Brienne the beauty. Judith Butler illustrates masculinity in Bro (2016), “The way that ideas about traditional masculinity are linked to the idea of the hero. As Judith Butler concludes in Gender Trouble, biological sex and gender are not tied together, and gender is not binary—one is not either man or woman (Bro, 2016, p 58).
Daenerys Targaryen of House Targaryen, Queen of the Andals and the First Men, Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, Breaker of Chains, and now Mother of Dragons. An example for female liberation: encouraging to push harder and dream bigger for more freedom. She’s quiet, humble, and gentle who has been physically, mentally, and sexually abused by her brother, Viserys who sells her to Khal Drogo, her now dead husband so he could buy an army of Dothraki. Her ownership then transfers to Drogo, who repeatedly rapes her before Daenerys learns to assert herself and manipulate his desire. She had a messed up relationship with him from the beginning where she was once afraid of him since he was this large, muscular, intimidating man who didn’t speak the common tongue. Eventually, that began to change when she started growing bolder, taking charge in the bedroom. He begins to treat her as a real human being who knows what she wants rather than an object. “Female self-sexualization perpetuates the gender hierarchy by reinforcing the patriarchal idea that sex is women’s main source of power (Erchull & Liss, 2013; Smolak & Murnen, 2011). However, people believe that self-sexualization positively empowers women, for two reasons. First, people learn from their peers that women are rewarded for using their “feminine charms” From this perspective, self-sexualization is viewed as a strategy to increase women’s personal power, which challenges the gender hierarchy (Infanger, Rudman, and Sczesny,
Almost all the female characters in the story were seen as a possession and/or wife. One of the few exceptions to this would be Queen Olof, the mother of Yrsa. Queen Olof acted more as if she were a king rather than a Queen, in the sense that she would “dress in a coat of mail, carried a sword and shield, and wore a helmet” (Anon, 6. King Helgi attempts). She ruled over her own land in Saxland and had no intention of getting married (in
Femininity and masculinity are topics that have been debated over in our society extensively, through psychological research and day to day interaction with people. Children learn from their parents as well as society the concept of “feminine” and “masculine.” The majority of people tend to believe that these conceptions are biological but I believe it is more cultural. From birth, female children are shaped by society as being sweet, caring, loving, and delicate and usually associated with the color pink. While male children are shaped by being tough, aggressive, and competitive and associated with the color blue. As these children grow, the boy is given a football to play with and the girl a
Feminism is a body of social theory and political movement primarily based on and motivated by the experiences of women. While generally providing a critique of social relations, many proponents of feminism also focus on analyzing gender inequality and the promotion of women's rights, interests, and issues.

Men and women are different. How different depends on what stereotype one chooses to believe. Although it has been argued that some stereotypes are positive, they are never beneficial. Society creates gender stereotypes and perpetuates them through societal institutions. In this paper the roles of gender will be analyzed regarding education, public policy, and the workplace. How education shapes gender, the gender norms in government, the law, policies, and the role of gender in the workplace will be discussed.
Since the beginning of the 1800's, women had been fighting for the rights that they wanted. Women should be able to vote, control their own property and income, and they should have access to higher education and professional jobs. Women also had many roles in society. Women had very important parts in jobs as they took up more responsibilities. Girls, young ladies, and women of all ages were working harder to bring home income. Most women thought the pay and the conditions were unfair. These arguments grew as women fought more and more for social equality.
women as sensitive and weak, Game of Thornes turns away from these traditional stereotypes and depicts Arya Stark as a true warrior who uses her grit, intuitiveness and fighting abilities to outsmart almost anyone in the series.
Gender inequality has been an issue since long before the 1840s, when feminists finally brought the problem to light. Most ancient cultures were societies based on gender inequality, skewed towards male-dominance. Most societies are still mostly patriarchal, in fact. Patriarchy is the root of discrimination between sexes and genders and has been for a very long time.
