Modern technology is ruining the mind of people in this society today mostly in teens. Most teens would rather send text messages, than have a face to face conversation. Also predators are preying on young girls through the internet. It also has kids ages five through eleven in the house playing videos games. Also it seems as if no one knows what to do when the internet is down and not working. Lastly modern technology has ruined communicating in person between the young and the old. These are some of the ways we are too reliant on technology. Preteens and Young adults are very much interested in communicating by the internet. Although some of the communication ways are good, some teens make up rumors and bully others on the internet. Most teens use social media as a way to gossip because they think there is no consequences since it is not happening at school. Some kids do not know how hard is was to remember everyone’s phone number, they would rather text than have a phone call. When teens do make phone calls they are mostly prank calls, There was many reports on the news about how children committed suicide because they were cyberbullied. Kids get on social media and make public statuses with rumors about other children and those rumors follow the kids forever until they reach their breaking point. Most kids that are cyberbullied turn to suicide because they feel as if that is the only way to get away from it all. Teens are also “sexting” over text messages. Teens
We rely on technology for everything in our lives today. It is hard for us to be more than ten steps away from our phone. Dependence on technology is even evident in Fahrenheit 451. In the novel, the TV is everything to some people. It becomes their friend their family and even their life. They even have technology that butters their toast and medical procedures. We use technology everyday whether it is our phone, laptop, or ipod. We use them every single day all day long. If something was not to work for a single day our society would crash with the absence of technology.
According to Bulent Dilmac, “bullying is defined as aggression with the intention of hurting (Kepenekci & Çınkır, 2003) and is an anti-social form of behavior that produces negative consequences (Taylor, 2006).” “Cyberbullying is defined as the repetitive use of information and communication technologies by an individual or a group in order to hurt other individuals. (Akbaba & Eroǧlu, 2013).” There have been several cases where cyberbullying causes teenagers to take their own life’s (commit suicide). It can cause individuals to suppress negative emotions within them. Lowering their self-esteem and looking at life with a sense of hopelessness. Jessica Laney was a victim of cyberbullying when she was insulted on social media.
Social media has been a topic of debate for years. Some people are strongly against any use of it while others like the instant connection it provides. A major concern over social media is the lasting effects it has on teenagers. Social media can affect teenagers through many ways including things like their self-esteem. Cyberbullying is a raging topic of discussion centered around teens social media use. It can also effect their people skills and create a lack of community involvement. Some parents think that watching what their children do on social media is an invasion of privacy but is your concern for their privacy greater than your concern for their safety? Social media poses a great danger to today’s children. It can affect many aspects of their lives.
Utilizing social media has been shown to enhance communication, social interaction, and sharpen technical skills of teenagers. Benefits to teens of social media allow them to socialize with friends, make new friend, and even help each other on group projects or homework. Studies indicate that over 20% of teenagers log onto social media sites over 10 times in one day. A con in social media is that its has caused cyberbullying and online hate. Studies have shown that online harassment is no more common than offline harassment. Another con in social media is that sexting has increased 20% in teens. These teens have indicated that they have posted nude or semi nude photos of themselves. Teens do not realize the risk
Causes of suicide vary but as technology advances new causes are apparent. Social media plays a major role in causes of suicide. Technology allows cyber bullying to happen frequently and recur until something or someone stops it. Victims of bullying often think they have no way out of their situation or feel like there is no help. People with suicidal thoughts struggle either mentally, physically, or emotionally. “Three million children are absent from school each month due to bullying. Twenty percent of those bullied kids have suicidal thoughts” (Bullying and Suicide, 2016, p.1). Media’s such as snapchat, instagram, twitter, or facebook all provide factual information about previous cases of suicide. Cyberbullying is a serious problem especially among adolescent girls. Girls are more likely than boys to attempt suicide due to cyberbullying, because girls are struggling to find themselves as a person (Bichell, 2013, p. 3). Any form of negativity or put down affects them, and who they are trying to become.
A large sum of suicides are indirectly or directly influenced by experiences with online aggression. Suicide is not an uncommon result of tormenting through social media. “The psychological impact [of cyberbullying] can be devastating, and suicide is not unknown among young victims. For some victims, the damage to their sense of dignity and emotional well-being could persist for years." (“Jessica Mendoza”) The effects of online bullying are extremely harmful to children. Any child that is having suicidal thoughts from online bullying is a deeply harmed child. Suicide in teens is not uncommon either. Jennifer Holladay states, “Our study of upwards of 2,000 middle school students revealed that cyberbullying victims were nearly twice as likely to attempt suicide compared to students not targeted with online abuse.” Online abuse it a growing problem with the modernizing society. More and more people at younger and younger ages have more access online, and to social media. This increases the online abuse, and will lead to more and more suicides in teens
Given these points, Technology has many long-term affects that can lead to many problems like over-relying on the internet, not developing our mind the way it was suppose to be, and etc. Like Socrates one said, “ We are exposing our brains to an environment and asking them to do things we weren’t necessarily evolved to do, he said, We know already there are
Everyday humans pass hundreds possibly even thousands of their acquaintances staring into the brightly lit screens of iPhones and Androids. What could they possibly be doing that makes them so oblivious to the bustling world around them? Technology is to blame. iPhones, Androids, Blackberries, and the occasional flip phone are amongst the technology taking over the everyday lives of humans. It's the future, lifeless objects taking the lives of humans.
I would have to say that technology is ruining children's lives. The more new things come up the more lazy we get. I would have to say that having a phone is very distracting, but I am able to stay off of it. Not many kids have grown up to be on electronics, but now every kid in the US has some type of device that distracts them from going outside. Not many people tell their kids that they need to go outside and to be active. More and more kids now a days are lazy and don’t do anything. So many kids think that they can function while on the internet, but in reality they can’t. For example, my brother thinks that he will die if he doesn’t get to play his video games. My mother only allows him to play for an hour and only if he has his homework
Cyberbullying can, and recently has resulted in a much higher rate of teenage suicide. The rate of teenage suicide has seemingly skyrocketed over the past 10-15 years and that is because of the upgrade in social media ability and the wrong kids falling into the wrong paths. Many of the teenagers who do end up committing suicide from cyberbullying,
In today’s modern world, technology reigns. Millions of people all over the globe utilize technology for a multitude of purposes every day, whether it be at work, school, or even from the leisure of their home. If you were to ask most people in America if they could live without technology even for a day, the answer would most likely be no. Contrary to opinions that are popular with my fellow millennials, I think that society is too dependent on technology. I believe society relies on technology too much because we use the internet for simple tasks that we should be capable of doing ourselves, our dependence has resulted in laziness, and technology is rapidly replacing people in the workplace, thus resulting in less jobs.
Technology has had so many advances in the past decade. People are constantly using the internet for numerous things. Every person uses the internet and technology at least once in their lifetime. Since technology is constantly growing and advancing people find themselves using it more and more for everyday life. Now, adults are usually the ones using the internet, but young kids have found themselves using it more frequently as well. Whether it be a child who is using a phone for games, or a teenager who is using a phone for social media, the internet is always being used. Young kids also find themselves using the internet for several things including social media or texting. With young people using social media there can be a positive side, a negative side, and even changes in ones mind. Young people feed into social media and with this comes cyberbullying, insecurities, distraction, and no privacy.
Last but not least, technology makes us lazy. Children do not want to read books anymore when they can just run to a computer and get the summary of the book. People are becoming obese because they are not getting out of their homes anymore to exercise because they are glued to Farmville on Facebook. We rather do something easy than actually take the time to do it the long way around. Technology has made the people of the world couch potatoes. We can do everything at a push of a button, and we don’t have to put forth much effort to do the things that we once use to do manually.
Social media is one of the biggest common use of technology teenagers use daily. To understand what this is , “Cyberbullying
Another source of the overdependence of technology in children is school. At school, they are introduced to technology at a very young age, sometimes even in preschool. Children are introduced to calculators at a very young age, helping them with math problems they should be able to do in their heads. The teachers are encouraging it so the students don’t take the time to learn how to do it out and then struggle when they have no calculator. Also, children today are proven to have much worse handwriting than in the past. They are now expected to type English essays and in elementary school; many aren’t taught cursive but rather how to use computers. For example, in 2009, 97 percent of teachers had at least one computer in their room, and out of that, 93 percent of the computers were connected to the Internet (Gray, Thomas, Lewis). Intelligence is continuously decreasing due to all of the shortcuts children now are able to take advantage of. In some aspects, the advancements are really aiding students. They have almost any information they can imagine wherever they go, just by going to Google. Typing is neat and
