Going from long skirts and traditions the youth are beginning to radically change our culture creating controversy. This era is where many of our traditions that have never been questioned before are being put to the limits by our growing youth. We used to be a culture of women covering up, planned dates, horses and buggies and everyone attending church. The war is over and everything is changing, so the real question we must ask is, is it actually bad? First of all planned dating and seeming improper to mingle between the sexes is old and does not allow the youth to choose the right person that they want to spend the rest of their life with. Women throughout creation have always been forced to cover up and seem ‘ladylike’ but now the youth are showing that women have the freedom to act as they please. Finally, religion has always been something everyone believes but now with the new theory of evolution we should allow people to choose for themselves what they want. Therefore the youth are not merely destroying our …show more content…
Teach what's always taught or also teach evolution? The first amendment protects everyone's right to freedom of religion so why shouldn’t people get to choose what they want to believe. Religion is causing a ton of controversy between the traditionalists and modernists. Traditionalists believe that everyone should continue to attend church each Sunday, read their bible and take the word of God very seriously. On the other hand modernists believe that everyone should be able to decide what they believe and not just be subjected to one way of thinking that everyone has always done. Evolution introduced the new idea of a big bang creating the world and that we evolved from ape ancestors compared to God creating the earth with everything and everyone in it. Everyone is granted freedom of religion so they should all be able to choose what they believe though it might seem different or foreign to what their grandparents or even parents
The 1920’s was a time of prosperity and change in the United States, but with change comes disagreements. One of the largest debates during this time period, and still today, was the debate between science and religion. Many people were Christians in America during this time and they believed that the story of how God created the Earth should be taught in public schools. These people were called “fundamentalists.” They believed nothing could compare to or be as powerful as God’s word. The other side to this debate were the Modernists, or the ones who believed in science rather than religion. Modernists wanted to teach the theory of evolution in public schools instead of the Creation story the Fundamentalists believed in (“United States in History”). All of these different opinions led to one of the most famous trials known as the Scopes v. State of Tennessee trial. John Scopes was a substitute teacher in Tennessee who decided to teach the theory of evolution to a science class. Scopes was accused of violating the Butler Act, which states that teaching anything that
During the Interwar Period (1919-1939), many countries around the world underwent many ideological changes. Prior to World War I, imperial competition amongst the European countries led to patterns of constitutional and ethnolinguistic nationalism and patterns of industrialization. Members of a Bosnian Serb nationalist group assassinated Austrian heir Franz Ferdinand, which became the catalyst for the first World War that would last until 1919. With 20 million soldiers and civilians dead and another 21 million wounded, the countries looked for ways to recover from the results of the war. Three new patterns of modernity emerged after World War I; Capitalist democracy, Communism, and Supremist Nationalism.
The Romanticism period in the United States was focused mainly on nature which introduced progressiveness as one of the quintessential characteristics of America and its citizens. Romanticism was a movement in which the people believe that nature is at the epicenter of all ideas and inspirations. This sentiment of nature’s greatness only increased amongst Americans after the Louisiana Purchase and the migration of the Americans to the west that came shortly afterward. The Louisiana purchase was a deal made with the French for control over most of the mid-west and other western areas in 1803. The deal was made by Thomas Jefferson during his presidency for only 15 million dollars (May-Beaver). The Louisiana Purchase was one of Jefferson’s best decisions as president due
Our core values are built upon freedom. Freedom from tyranny, freedom from control, freedom to choose. A student should have the option to learn whatever it is they desire, whether it be evolution, or creationism, because it is our right to choose what to believe. There was a true story based on an argument where science was not allowed to be taught, but religion was. It correlates to the novel Inherit the Wind. The plot settles in a trial held between two defendants lawyers battling it out of the science versus Evolution. A school teacher named Cates, who got arrested and went to jail because he taught evolution in a science class. I believe that evolution should be taught in science classes and that school teachers being arrested due to
In my opinion Evolution should be taught in school but so should Creationism. I think students should be able to choose which theory to learn in school. None of either theory should be forced on students. The argument between teaching each one is that Evolution is a proven historically fact according to the National Academy of Sciences. The majority of those people who desire for creationism to be taught in the public schools cite that it is scientific. They push for the teaching of creation science which is defined as "scientific evidence for creation and the inferences from that evidence" (Tatina 275). The inferences from that evidence are "sudden creation of the universe from nothing, recent formulation of the earth, creation of man and other biological kinds, a worldwide flood", and
Photography has come into existence due to the evolution of the renaissance craft, which often involved the artistic creation, and documentation of occasions, figures, and memories. Photography as a practice that consists of so many different styles and techniques that vary in regard to the school of photography being used. For example the Pictorialist thinks of photography as a type of fine art and therefore try to make it artistic by using pictures or visual images, which furthermore establishes their point that photography is an art or a form of fine art, on the other hand the Modernist has adapted to the modern techniques which has more focus on the sharp center of the image and using the camera as an instrument rather than seeing it as a canvass which is usually how pictorialists see it, and they also believe in creating very high quality images which
In conclusion, you now see where I am coming from. Evolution is no better than the theory of creation. But if you are going to teach the idea of one thing, at least show the competing theory and its side. Then you wind up with everyone thinking it is all one sided, and that can make people upset. So parents, teachers, staff, school boards, if you have a religion or beliefs, don’t you want it to be heard. Maybe even taught if there are other sides to it. I am asking that you all stand up for what you believe in and make education
Modernism represents an optimistic view of human impact on the environment that has been the dominant viewpoint for the last 200 years. The knowledge that mankind holds the ability to control the environment heavily stresses why climate change is not such a problem to worry about. One of the core beliefs of the modernistic perspective is that people have no need to fear future environmental disaster because the next technological advancement that will prevent it is right around the corner. Furthermore, those who share this view do not include themselves in their image of the ecosystem, believing they are detached from it. Lastly, a laissez-faire approach is taken to environmental problems, focusing on progression through technology, stressing that as long as progress is made in this area all problems will be fixed. For a modernist, climate change is nothing to worry about. This may be a real situation, but it will be solved with advancements in technology before one’s way of life is changed. What people should be worrying about is ensuring a laissez faire approach to the market with sponsorship to new technologies. As a result of reusable energy technology already existing, modernists believe that the problem of climate change has been solved and without disrupting free market system these technologies will be further implemented. As long as there are people given the opportunity to innovate, some will focus on and ultimately solve the concern of climate change. The issue of
This does not mean, however, that we take every bit of information we come across. All things being equal, we should take the piece of the puzzle of knowledge to fit, and mold, our thoughts, views, values, and beliefs into our individual outlook. Evolution is a part of science that demonstrates key mechanics that are not only used in evolution, but also can be applied to all sides of science. It will help students see the possibilities of the world, and help puzzlement questions (i.e. the blue jay vs. the crow) that humans have faced since the origins of cognitive thought. There is something to be said about how the principles of evolution embrace other scientific ranks that help to answer the many questions of the universe. Despite concerns of religious freedom, it must be known that evolution is not one minded, nor is it an instrument to attack other ways of thinking. In life, we all have to take, and pick, what we want from our world. This is why debates and controversy exists in our daily lives. It is clear that evolution is not only a should in our public schools, but a need as we try to develop clear minded, intelligent, bright, and tenacious minds of the
During the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, changes in the dynamics of society caused intellectuals to question the traditions of everyday life. From religious views to the arts of literature, traditional values and forms were rejected, thus defining a line between the two time periods, which can be considered as the start of the Modern era. Also known as Modernism, the modern era used literature as an outlet for expressing the thoughts and feelings of the time. Modern texts use city life, industrialization and globalization, and ironic and satirical themes to showcase their bleak outlook on life post both world wars. The nature of these events are aspects of society
The beginning of the twentieth century represented an expatriate era in the Australian art. For instance, such artists as Tom Roberts and Arthur Streeton found their place in the London’s Royal Academy of Arts. However, the majority of these expatriate painters returned to Australia after the First World War. Consequently, the European avant-garde gave an inspiration for the Australian modernist’s movement. The most significant point of a new art direction was a rejection of the traditional representation of the world. The innovators followed the new European trends and started to experiment with various stylistic and technological innovations. Thus, the forms and styles went beyond the content and subject matter

Mostly known for his corporate logos, Paul Rand revolutionized the world of Graphic Design, whom he claimed himself as a “self-taught” artist, as his bio on the Paul Rand site would mention. Paul Rand, at a very young age, always knew he wanted to be an artist because he knew with being an Orthodox Jew and painting signs for his father, he would venture out creating more “signs” and developing his own logos in the world of Graphic Design. He was known and will always be known as “The American Modernist” Artist by his site, books and fellow artists.
Modernism is just another word for 20th century. It was a movement which started in the beginning of the 20th century and carried on until about the 1960’s.
“Modern painting, breaking through old conversation, has released countless suggestions which are still waiting to be used by the practical world.”(Gropius) The birth of modernism and modern art goes back to the Industrial Revolution, a period that lasted from the 18th to the 19th century, in which rapid changes in manufacturing, transportation, and technology profoundly affected the social, economic, and cultural conditions of life in Western Europe, North America, and eventually the world. Before the 19th century, artists created art pieces for wealthy people and institution places like the church where they can create art works about storytelling of religious or mythological scenes . These arts were there to instruct the viewers. However, this changed when during the 19th century many artists began to create works that were about people, places, or ideas that interested them, and of which they had direct experience. With the popularization of the idea of a subconscious mind, many artists began exploring dreams, symbolism, and personal iconography as avenues for the depiction of their subjective experiences.Challenging the notion that art must realistically depict the world, some artists experimented with the expressive use of color, non-traditional materials, and new techniques and mediums.
