The definition of the Modernist period of art is artistic work produced during the period of the 1860s to the 1970s, and it denotes the styles and philosophy of the art produced during that era. The term Modernist is usually associated with art that is experimenting and is not regarding traditions of the past. Two examples Modernist movements include geometric abstraction and surrealism which are both similar and different in many ways. Geometric abstraction is a form of abstract art based on the use of geometric figures to create an emotion for the viewer based on reality that rose in the Modernist period of art. Horseman of the Apocalypse painted by Pierre Daura in Spain, 1939 is a perfect example of a painting demonstrating geometric abstraction. When looking at that the painting Horseman of the Apocalypse, there is a big diamond shape with the edges touching the corners of the canvas. The reason the diamond stands out so much is because Pierre Daura purposely made the colors inside of it lighter which created a strong focal point to what is inside of the diamond. Inside of the diamond is a galloping horse including the colors red, black, pale, and white. Outside of the diamond there is four horse riders which correspond to the four colors of the horses. In the Book of Revelation it states that when these horses and their riders go forth to conquer it will symbolize the end of the world.
