How often do you wake up worrying about money? How often do your loved ones worry about money? How often have you heard, “if only I had the money?” How often do you feel that more money would solve all your problems and would make you happy? What if I told you that you were right, to an extent. Author’s across the discussion of happiness have tried to answer the simply stated, yet complicatedly answered question, “Can Money Buy Happiness?” Authors Ed Diener and Robert Biswas-Diner attempt to answer the question in their piece of the same name, by explaining that “Yes, money buys happiness…but it must be considered in the bigger picture of what makes people genuinely rich” (Biswas-Diener 160-161). What is true happiness? I have chosen four texts which relate to my topic of how money can’t buy happiness. Macbeth and The Great Gatsby show how being the most powerful and wealthiest person can’t make you happy. Macbeth is set in in Scotland during the 11th century while The Great Gatsby is set in 1925 on Long Island. These two texts have many similarities and comparisons that i will cover throughout my piece. My other two texts; Money doesn’t buy happiness, neither does poverty and The Pursuit of Happyness are set in more current time and show how money can’t buy happiness and that to be happy you don’t need to be rich and famous.

Throughout the modern era, society’s views on money’s effect on a person’s emotions have drastically changed. Many people believed that the more money a person has, the more satisfied he or she will be. However, due to recent conclusions made by writers and case studies, money has proven to not be responsible for a person’s contentment. In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, The Great Gatsby, Daisy and Gatsby’s wealth ultimately shows the reader that money does not equal happiness.

We’ve all heard the saying, “Money can’t buy happiness.” While it’s true in some way, it’s also true that you can use money as an instrument to help you buy something or anything that will make you happy.

The significance of the money the family is expecting to receive is that Big Watler (Mama’s husband) had passed and mama is now getting $10,000. In the past the Younger family weren’t exactly rich but had enough to get by. In the present they are struggling to get by. In the future Mama hopes to have a big home of her own where there's room for everyone. The money is important because they are struggling. Travis sleeps on the couch and ruth wants him to have a good life. Mama wants to use the money for Beneatha's school, but now they discovered that Ruth is pregnant and is thinking about getting rid of the baby. The money is important because itll help them in the future.

Money is an item that could be used to buy many things. One of these things money can buy is happiness. According to a Harvard professor, money can only buy happiness if you know what to do with that money. Things like TVs and phones can only bring limited happiness and will not last forever.

In Michael Norton’s eleven minute video, “How to Buy Happiness”, he talks about the quote known worldwide “money can’t buy happiness”. However, he and many other colleagues within his business college utterly disagree

Happiness or satisfaction is an inclination we have for some reasons. Defining a specific definition for happiness is not easy as everybody has his own points of view of happiness from their own experience. A few people would say money can provide the joy since they assume money could give them power, while others oppose this idea (Michael Argyle). Happiness along with enjoyment can be achieved by numerous items and materials and money can, and has satisfied that joy which one needs for a long time.

Sarah Gervais, Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, discusses three ways in which money can buy happiness for a person. She discusses that money can only buy happiness to a particular level, how experiences bring more happiness than material objects, and how giving to others increases a person’s happiness. Additionally, she emphasizes the importance of a person finding happiness before spending money on objects because a person cannot find happiness in material possessions. Happiness is a hard word to define. Many people have different opinions of what happiness is to them, and what brings that happiness. One of the many debates is, can money buy happiness? Money can buy happiness, because money creates memorable experiences and opportunities, helps with your well-being, and there is a great connection between money and happiness.

“Can money buy happiness?” has been a cliche question for centuries, and there have been numerous studies and debates on this topic. Yet, no one seems to have a definite answer. In the video Money and Happiness, Michael Norton states explicitly that money does bring people happiness if you spent it on other people rather than on yourself. Although his interesting and novel answer is contrary to people’s natural instinct, it makes me reflect on my past experience of spending on others, and helps me understand the true benefits of this spending habit.

So in conclusion, I think that money isn’t necessarily the source of happiness, because true happiness in my opinion is enjoying the things that we already have, and having lots of money will not guarantee happiness, like in the story. The human kind has always strived towards power, and wealth is one of the necessities for those who want this power. However, nowadays many seek wealth, because they want the freedom that money can grant, and thus become happier. Some people tend overrate how much happier they will get by becoming rich. That leads to the question: “Can you buy happiness?”

It could be said that most of people all over the world prefer to live happily. Therefore, two questions including what happiness is and how to be happier are usually attracted these people to answer by themselves. These answers, consequently, influence their thoughts, activities, and their lives significantly. In fact, it could be true that there are a number of happiness definitions and a large quantity of factors contributing to people’s happiness. In recent researches, one of these factors is money (Dunn, Gilbert & Wilson 2011; Aaker, Rudd & Mogilner 2011). Some point out that money can cause people happy; others, however, think that it may not. Happiness, in more details, could assume to be people’s sustainable satisfaction. In other words, it is not only a mere satisfaction but also a deep pleasurable feeling (Mark 2017; King 2016). For this definition, money could partly cause human’s happiness. Although money might sometimes determine happiness in term of both physical aspects and a high level of social connections, humans’ sustainable pleasure could not depend on money, and money might sometimes relate to the reasons of unhappiness.

In the year, 2011, America’s top people that donate gave away $10.4 billion dollars. In 2016 that amount of money grew tremendously. That shows that many popular people in America donate to charities and help people that are in need. By helping the people that need money that gain more happiness because they did something that would really help a large amount of people. While most people say you don’t need money to be happy. Well, I say that money can buy you happiness. Money can buy you happiness by helping people, don’t have to worry about your finances and you can also live a healthy life. This paper will talk about the reason how money can buy people happiness.
