Morality in The Hunt for Red October
While hundreds, even thousands of excellent movies have been made over the years since motion pictures were invented, there are some movies that stand out among the best. There are various reasons for these standouts, sometimes incredible acting, sometimes impeccable story lines, but in many cases, it is the issues addressed by the movie. Most of the greatest movies contain commentaries or analyses of certain issues, be they moral, social, or otherwise. John McTiernan directed one of these films, The Hunt for Red October, based on the similarly titled best-selling novel by Tom Clancy. The Hunt for Red October, a product of the anti-communist attitudes of the 1980's, is above all a commentary on

This is a direct commentary on the idea of doing what you feel is right instead of what you are told to do. Through the course of the movie we see the effects of this decision. The Soviets try to convince the Americans that he is intending to attack the United States, and the Americans, once they realize Ramius is trying to defect, try to help him defect. The officers of Ramius' crew have also had to make their own moral decisions as they assist Ramius' defection. They, too, have had to follow the beliefs of right and wrong instead of the morality that has been given to them by their naval superiors. There is also a moral decision to be made by the KGB agent loyal to the Soviet Union on Ramius' submarine, the cook's assistant Loginov. When he discovers that Ramius is intending to defect, he makes the decision to attempt to stop Ramius, even at cost of his own life. The fact that he is against the hero of the movie, Ramius, does not mean that he is evil, although he is seen as such for purposes of the movie. His decision comes from his belief that what Ramius is doing is morally wrong. He believes that defection is treason, and is unacceptable under any circumstances, and he believes that it is his job to prevent this treason. His decision comes from his own moral beliefs, and therefore cannot be labeled as wrong. His beliefs are simply different from Ramius'. The Russians are not the only characters that must
The author states, “no man can be imagined to be of such an iron nature that he would stand fast in justice,” which means that acting morally always tends to be a secondary choice (Plato). With respect to this, justice is only possible when a person has an external stimulus to act as justice requires. It can be concluded that “it is always in one’s interest to live in a society in which other people conform their actions to the norms of justice”, however, “it is not necessarily in one’s own self-interest always to govern one’s own actions by these norms” (Gentzler 5). Respectively, acting in a moral way is required by the outside authority while people inherently would choose to follow their own
Saving Private Ryan is a movie that generates strong responses from most people that see it. While interviewing four individuals and reading three movie reviews, I found that each of my subjects would recommend it, not one of the individuals interviewed felt the violence was senseless, and all of them left the movie with a strong emotional response of some kind. It appears that Saving Private Ryan is the kind of movie to which many can relate.
It is usually quite clear to distinguish what is right and wrong in everyday life; it is wrong to kill people, it is wrong to purposely hurt others and it is wrong to leave others behind. In life, most if not all know what they should and shouldn't do. However in war meanings of morality change. In the novel All Quiet on the West Front by Erich Maria Remarque, the meaning of morality changes as the immoral becomes moral because the boys now fight for their lives.
From Heroes Every Child Should Know: Perseus(Mabie) its moral shows in the first sentence that you have to listen or he will without a doubt die. This shows he had to think should he die for the sake of a few minutes of listening. Perseus is getting some advice from Athene, the goddess of wisdom and war. She asks him to slay her enemy “the mother of all monstrous beasts, Medusa.” Perseus had to think first instead of accepting the offer immediately, he accepted what the Athene asked him to do because he could die killing
In order to support his claims, the author provides a variety of sources as evidence. The Reagan administration's open-door policy towards Clancy and personal invitation to dine with the President stands out. However, the most objective evidence provided in regards to the government's embrace of Clancy is the degree of access the film-versions of his novels received in contrast with less ideologically-supportive films. When making The Hunt for Red October, a film which promotes demonization of the Soviet state and supports American naval
The title itself “Do The Right Thing” is oxymoronic because nobody in the film does the right thing. This can be said about even now. The people in the film thought that by burning down the pizzeria a change would happen, just like now how the rioters in Chicago and St. Louis. In the film you get a sense of familiarity because the scenery you see in the film is the same as what you see around you. Bed Stuy represent all of the black neighborhoods in America that are middle class or poor.
We have all made bad decisions without thinking first about the consequences that it will have on others an example of one is when we agreed to the atomic bombing of Japan. We have a moral duty to consider all options before making a big decision about ours and others futures so that we are not hated based on one bad choice.
The decision between what is right and what is wrong can be difficult based on the circumstances. In The Kite Runner, by Khaled Hosseini, the director of the orphanage decided between doing something immoral or sticking to what is right. He chose to sell children to the Taliban that have taken control of Afghanistan instead of fighting for the young kids and refusing the exchange. The director made the wrong decision, which resulted in a catastrophic line of events following the deal.

Countryman emphasises that films produced from the late 1950s through to the 1970s were subject to political influences in the filmmaking having been, “produced in times of trial and turmoil” (Countryman 20). The political turmoil present during the era of the Cold War allowed for the construction of, “a myth that is at the very core of American self-understanding… that was to dominate Cold War representations of American identity” (Countryman
Is morality relative? Ruth Benedict and James Rachels have opposing views on this conroversial question. Benedict, "a foremost American anthropologist who taught at Columbia University" (Pojman 370) believes that morality is relative to one's culture and that one's behavior which is deemed moral or immoral is dependent upon cultural norms. Her argument is as such:
Another major character who is impacted by the coming of this check is Walter’s wife, Ruth. The promise of a secure future is what this money entails for her. Ruth’s obstacle is a moral and ethical one. Daily, she sees her son Travis, forced to sleep night after night on this cramped living room sofa with no room to call his own. The plot thickens when she finds out she is now pregnant with child. Suddenly, the check seems to symbolize the opening of a new door, a new home, and a new life for her and Walter Lee. Things all come to ahead when she sees the options laid before her and Walter, to abort this child or not. “I’m sorry about this new baby, Walter…” “ I guess maybe I better go on and do what I started,” cries Ruth. The money represents
Conceptual skill - Ramius is the only person who could have come up with the plan to defect from Russia in such a way that he would be able to leave his crew behind unscathed while taking his officers with him as he defects. The other members of the Russian Navy would never have dreamed of defecting, much less doing so in an experimental nuclear sub while being chased by both the Russian and American Navy.
The problem at hand is a moral dilemma. As the commander of a naval vessel, I have a duty to respond to the distress signals sent out by fellow mariners. Since that naval vessel is a United States Naval surface combatant, I have a further obligation to respond to distress signals sent out by American citizens under attack in international waters. The decision, described below, is based on a deontological approach to moral decision-making.
The film I picked for my critique is Red Tails, a historical World War II drama. The movie starred Cuba Gooding Jr., Terrence Howard and Gerald Mcraney, was written by John Ridley and Aaron McGruder, better known as the creator of the comic strip “the boondocks”, from a book by John B. Holway, directed by Anthony Hemingway and produced by George Lucas . In this paper the author will show how all elements of filmmaking
