Motivation For Boko Haram 's Attacks

On Tuesday, January 17, a Nigerian bombing jet accidentally bombed a refugee camp in Rann. It was an attempted attack against the Nigerian islamist group Boko Haram. The bombing error resulted in over 50 deaths and more than 200 reported injuries. The people that were harmed by the bombing were mostly refugees or aid workers. Some of these workers were affiliated with the Red Cross and MSF, which is an international medical aid organization. The Red Cross was at the camp on the day of the bombing to deliver food to the refugees. Starvation has been a big threat in Nigeria with about 100,000 people at risk. Boko Haram has attempted to overthrow Nigeria's government and replace it with an Islamic state by the means of bombings, assassinations, and abductions. They are responsible for over 20,000 deaths and they have forced 2.6 million people to flee their homes.

The Boko Haram conflict is currently taking place in Nigeria, with some minor ongoing activity in western Chad, southeast Niger and northern Cameroon. Though the group is concentrated in the northeastern states of Borno and Yobe in Nigeria, its influence has spread throughout the country. The current insurgency officially began on July 26th, 2009, and while Nigerian President Muhammadu Buharu declared the conflict ‘technically’ over in December 2015, the violence continues today.

The group, Boko Haram, was created 14 years ago by Mohammed Yusuf (1970-2009) to create and pure Islamic state in Nigeria. This has created the perfect opportunity for terrorist groups to blossom and spread their messages to lands far away from their previous reach.

Boko Haram is now the biggest problem in Nigeria today. They have caused children to see education as corruption and are causing one of the poorest places in Nigeria to suffer. The schools have been ransacked and blown apart, teachers have been shot to death, and kids kidnapped and have been either raped or put into Boko Haram. The corrupted officials running the local government have now supported them in secret; this is a problem that needs to be solved because now they will have no education to rise against them and take them down.
