Over 10 years ago, a strange discovery was made. Way back in 1991 some hikers were hiking in the Otztal Alps; a mountain range on the border of Italy and Austria. They found a body and assumed that it was from another hiker but it wasn’t. Since they had special tools, they decided to investigate and dig out the body and along with the body came other interesting objects. The hikers found a copper axe, a flint-tipped dagger, a little fire-starting kit, and a birchbark container holding embers wrapped in maple leaves. After the Iceman was found, they (the hikers) took his body back to a research lab to investigate on who this was, how he died and how long he’d been up in the mountains. For 16 years scientist poked, prodded, incised, and x-rayed
In order to examine the interior of the body of the Iceman, scientists had to overcome some challenges. Special high-precision titanium instruments had to be developed for the examination of Ötzi.
For those seeking a secluded mountain home there would be none better than Appalachian Mountain real estate, as the starting point.
On this day in 1863, Union troops capture Lookout Mountain southwest of Chattanooga, Tennessee,as they begin to break the Confederate siege of the city. In the “battle above the clouds,” the Yankees scaled the slopes of the mountain on the periphery of the Chattanooga lines.
Taking on a journey stretching well over 2,100 miles, covering fourteen states (from Maine to Georgia) by foot is no simple stroll where at the end of the day a comfortable bed and hot meal would await you. Instead, hiking the Appalachian Trail can be an endless battle with all the elements of mother nature: whereas in one state spring would have sprung already with wildflowers dressing the forest floors and insects buzzing through crisp air, on other parts of the trail it [the weather conditions] would be smothering heat, but meanwhile a few states north the rain would fall endlessly with gusts of cold wind, and snow would blanket the pathways of the trail and more than likely blizzards
There is no vanity on the AT (The Appalachian Trail) and more than some walk in the woods. Seems like it would be just an adventure. It started as a journey and a leap of faith to hike the entire Georgia section of the AT in less than 6 days. Day 4 it became a transformation. I saw less than 10 people hiking for 6 days and 90 miles. I hiked till 7pm each day (one hour prior to sunset) and wherever the spirit led me, I set up my tent, ate my food, journaled, slept and got up at 6 am in order to be back on the trail as soon as I could see it. Relentless steep climbs on all types of terrain and many painful descents that caused much knee pain. Several nights totally alone in the wilderness. Lots of praying and talking to God out loud.
“Welcome all 2,500 competitors to the 2016 Tough Mountain Challenge!” I heard the emcee yell that over the speakers around the area and my chest seemed to vibrate with the noise coming from them. My eyes seemed to wander around to the many diverse faces lining up at the start. This would be my second year doing the race and I was both nervous yet excited to start. That day I overcame many hurdles both physically and mentally.
I have gone on a vast amount of trail rides with several different horse. This ride was the first time I had ever taken D. D. (Deanna's Delight) out on one. This trail ride will not ever be able to forget.
July 12, 2013- Corpse of a man 25 years of age discovered in Glacier National Park.
The body had been so well preserved because of the depth that the Iceman was actually lying in the ground, which was near the watershed (watershed meaning a line of high land where
Stone mountain has remained a very influential monument of Georgia; a gem of what may say to the state’s tourism and a landmark of American history throughout the ages. Stonewall Jackson, Robert E. Lee , and Jefferson Davis on top of their valuable steeds represent the Confederate nation and its tie with Stone mountain as they are carved meticulously in the world’s largest exposed granite; however, the peaceful serenity of the lake and nature that envelops the mountain and its visitors remained a very important ceremonial location for native americans. The complete history of Stone Mountain is interwoven into the treads of historical events that have occurred throughout and even before the great nation , United States of America, was formed. Currently, it’s one of the most famous attractions in Georgia known for the breathtaking view of metropolitan Atlanta at the peak of the mountain. It is clear as rich as the beauty of stone mountain is,undeniably, it has a strong historical importance to American history and exquisite backround.
Otzi, the 5,300 year old Iceman that was found on September 19th, 1991 was brutally killed in battle on a mountain. This theory is correct for many reasons including the injuries and where they are, how severe the injuries were, and more. It is also correct because in an article it had said “showed his death was violent, not the result of drowning, hypothermia or a fall.” proving other theorems incorrect. There were also two wounds in the Iceman’s right hand as well as his right wrist. We know this because the archeologists had said “he was stabbed while trying to defend himself with a dagger against an attacker” and if Otzi was really using a dagger then the attacker must have been closer and would not have had to use an arrow. In my life I have spent a great deal of time in northern Minnesota. That is the home of most of my family. There was a time that I lived up there, but due to constant changes in the world of lumber and saw mills, I have had to move. Every trip up back to the place I called home, we would see a large hill. It was a ski area. This place was a symbol for how close we were until I got to see my family. Under more scrutiny, I have discovered that it more than just a ski hill. This hill is called Spirit Mountain. This large hill contain multiple burial sites, and was used by the Indigenous group, the Anashaanabe.
On February 1st, the group set out on the expedition. After the group did not send a telegram like promised, a search party was formed, initially made up by students and volunteers, & later including army and police forces. About a week after the search party was formed, the tent was found. The student who found the tent made this statement: “the tent was half torn down and covered with snow. It was empty, and
In 1991, one warm autumn day two people were hiking on a mountain trail in the Otztal valley in northern italy. Both hikers had spotted something different standing out from the snow. The hikers immediately contacted the police;the police discovered a man’s body but they never saw a body like that. This body was called the Iceman. Scientist discovered interesting things about the Iceman like bones and teeth showing that he was between 40 and 50 years old and and his stature is about 5 feet, 2 inches tall.
During the summer, my family and I had gone on a lot of walks. We usually went on Saturdays and spent at least an hour trail walking. Doing this was fun and relaxing for me, especially in the morning, when everything was so peaceful and calm. This fun summer activity also connects with science.
