A lot of popular books and plays have been made into movies. Although directors try to keep the movie as close to the book or play, changes have to be made. One great example of this is Catching Fire and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. (Collins, Lawrence). A major chunk of the book is left out in the movie. This change was probably made to keep the movie from being four hours long. This change causes some crucial details from the book to be left out of the movie. Many other books and movies have differences. Some differences between Romeo and Juliet and Romeo+Juliet were the time period in which they are set, the party thrown by the Capulets, and the way Juliet takes her own life (Shakespeare, Luhrmann). A similarity between the play and movie was the language that the characters used. The director would make these changes to modernize the movie so younger audiences would be attracted to watch the movie. One difference between Romeo and Juliet and Romeo+Juliet is the time period in which they are set. Romeo and Juliet is set in Verona, Italy, …show more content…
In both the movie and the play they both speak Early Modern English, the way Shakespeare wrote (Luhrmann, Shakespeare). For example, “No matter. Get thee gone, / And hire those horses. I’ll be with thee straight.” (Shakespeare 5.1.34-35, Luhrmann). The director would want to keep the language of the characters the same because if he changed it to modern English, he may lose what Shakespeare meant when he wrote it. Luhrmann might have thought that it would be too hard to translate it to a Modern English and still have the same meaning in what the characters say. He also may have kept this because he had respect for Shakespeare and did not want to change too much of what Shakespeare did. Shakespeare fans might have been upset if the language had been changed. The language in which the characters speak is one similarity between the movie and the
Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet has been modified numerous times and has been a source of inspiration for many playwrights and directors. Franco Zeffirelli and Baz Luhrmann are examples of directors that use Shakespeare’s legendary tragedy as a basis for their films.
Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story both have a lot in common as well as major differences that set them apart. Although West Side Story is a direct rendition of Shakespeare's original play, many of the themes and symbols are altered to fit the modern perspective. The characters have a direct correlation to each other, yet racial issues give them a new light. Many of the events also reflect each other, yet small differences give them uniqueness. West Side Story differs from Romeo and Juliet in characterizations, plot sequences, and themes.
There are many similarities and differences between the sixties version of Romeo and Juliet and the modern version of Romeo and Juliet. It is very easy to spot these differences considering the time period each movie was set in. There are some things in the play that totally got cut from both movies. There are also some things that they added to the movies that weren’t in the play. Let us get on to the similarities and differences.
The original play Romeo and Juliet and the new movie are almost exactly alike in their script, but the
In order to compare and contrast the play to the movie, first I will discuss the play .In the play there is a character named Romeo.Lovely Romeo wanted to marry Juliet and stay with her in Verona,Italy. But
This director’s choice shows that both directors cherished and respected Shakespeare's written text. In Zeffirelli’s film, the dialogue fits in with the other aspects of the film, such as the costumes and set. since everything is traditional, but what is interesting is that the actors manage to sound very natural and comfortable with the dialogue. They managed to convey strong emotion with help of the text and entirely transformed into the characters. Since, Zefferelli's version both includes the traditional sets, costumes, and language it makes it easy for the audience to understand the original play, the film is straightforward and does not contradict the original play, making the film a credible resort for those who want to have a better understanding of the story. Unlike Zeffirelli’s version, Luhrmann’s costumes and set do not suit the dialogue, making the Shakespearean dialogue in his version both strange to watch and hear, another odd aspect is that at times the characters did not precisely mean what they were saying, for instance, when a character was talking about their sword, they were actually talking about their guns named sword, consequently, this made the dialogue confusing to follow at times. Nevertheless, the actors in both films managed to execute an admirable performance and did Shakespeare's text
In the play Romeo was a little different than in the movie. In the play, Romeo cried over Rosaline and in the movie he did not physically cry. He just played pool and smoked instead of crying. Also in the movie, Romeo and his friends were always hanging out on the beach while in the play they didn’t. Also in the play, Romeo seemed more mature and adultlike than in the movie. Also in the play you kind of get the picture that the Capulets and the Montagues have the same toughness and intelligence but in the movie the Capulets and their friends are more reserved and mature than the Montagues.
In Franco Zeffirelli’s 1968 version of Romeo and Juliet, is a traditional adaptation of Shakespeare’s original Romeo and Juliet, with some variations. Baz Luhrmann directed the 1996 version, also known as the MTV Romeo † Juliet. This version is very modernized, but keeps the language intact with few changes.
Romeo and Juliet is a very well known book that is loved by many. There numerous movies done on Romeo and Juliet like Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 version and Gnomeo and Juliet. There are many apparent differences like using guns instead of swords and using gnomes instead of people. Although there are many similarities, the differences between Luhrmann’s movie and Gnomeo and Juliet compared to the play Romeo and Juliet are evident. The similarities between the movie and the play only go down to the plot and language.
The Romeo and Juliet movie does many things to change the time of the piece. Many of the original item have been replaced by newer ones such as how the swords have been replaced with guns and horses with cars. As the viewer becomes more connected with the characters they will start to become more immersed in the film and are more likely to enjoy the film more. When people like a film the film is more likely to generate more profits, so the author most likely wrote in the newer items in order to try and create a film that would be very profitable.
The original Romeo and Juliet was written by William Shakespeare along with the movie being directed by Baz Luhrmann. Romeo and Juliet was about two ¨star-crossed lovers¨, whom were devoted to each other, but couldn´t be together. Because of the extreme feud between the Montagues and Capulets, Romeo and Juliet are not allowed to interact, let alone fall in love. Luhrmann used costumes, weaponry, scenery, marriage, transportation and culture to create a modernized film meant to keep both Elizabethan and modern audiences entertained.
No one tells the story the same as the original. Over time people start to change stories to make them more interesting. Franco Zeffirelli 1968 version of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet sticks more to the original Shakespearean language and the simple set design also expressing love in more body language, Carlo Carlei 2013 version of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet is more easily understood due to some language changes to make the film more modern also set design making it more interesting to watch and character movement showing true love.
The films had their similarities such as the main character Romeo was always white in the films. Also you rarely seen Romeo’s parents. In all the films Juliet resembles the sword of death while dying next to Romeo. The nurse in all the films had the same mentality as one another. Also each author thought that Juliet was trying
There are some key details in both the movie and the script. Some key details in the play are that Romeo hides in the darkness, and that he is stalking Juliet in a way. It also takes place on a balcony near the streets,”[Seeing Juliet enter above on a balcony]” (Act II Scene 2, Page 71) which is a lot more in older days than modern. In the movie version, some key details are that Romeo is hidden on a vine, not so much hidden though.(You can see in the 1997 movie, Romeo + Juliet, directed by Baz Luhrmann.) The setting is also on a deck and a pool. Those are some of the key details you will need to know.
