Mr.Linder carefully chooses certain words to cover up his racist intentions, in order to make his proposal sound reasonable. Claiming that “a man, right or wrong, has the right to want to have the neighborhood he lives in a certain way”, he further demonstrates his bigotry, that is once again concealed under the cloak of fake friendship. Racist intentions of Mr.Linder can’t be clearly seen, but when looked at closely his true intentions are utterly unambiguous. His laid-back personality further disguises what his true objectives are. For instance, he claims that their “community is made up of people who’ve worked hard…” and they are “not rich and fancy, just hard-working, honest people”, after he attains their certitude, he asserts that “Negro
Every young man struggles with his inner character. Choosing how he carries himself around others and even himself is a snapshot of how he will be as not only a husband but as a father. In “Notes of a Native Son” by James Baldwin, he is conflicted with the problems of racism during the 1950’s, striving not to become the man his father was, and trying to figure out who he is as an individual. These things are what empowers him to write this essay. Baldwin’s conundrum is fueled the turmoil of self and living in a racist society throughout this story.
Margaret Laurence’s short story “The Loons” from A Bird in the House has proven highly controversial as an example of racist literature. The Loons, is a representation of racial separation in mid-western Canada in the early 1900's. Here, Margaret Laurence uses setting and characterization to show how severe the prejudice of white people can be towards half breeds, after the period of new colonization. Piquette Tonnere, protagonist, who intends to fight those prejudices eventually, dies, leaving readers surprised to observe the cruelty of the society.
In Charles R. Lawrence, narrative story “On Racist Speech” the narrator uses the free speech and the first amendment to address the issue in which black students have no rights around their school and no saying on the decision that other people make. Also, Lawrence talks about how racist speech should not be allowed and the first amendment should not protect against it. The narrative confronts that free speech shouldn’t be allowed on the main college campus and the author uses many examples to support this statement. One of the examples he uses is the Brown vs the Board of Education. Basically, the author says that many people view this case as the principle of equal citizenships, but it’s about the free speech because Brown says that

John Lewis initiates his claim by conveying that everyone in America should not tolerate racial segregation nor discrimination. In order to reach to his point, he uses the rhetorical device, pathos, in which it causes the “white” audience to feel remorse for what society has become. To illustrate this idea, Lewis reveals African Americans “live in constant fear of a police state”, “have been arrested on trumped charges”, and some faced “the death penalty for engaging in peaceful protest” (paragraph 2). The evidence highlights that they are going through hardships caused by the federal government because they are considered “inferior” compared to the “white” race. From this, readers can infer that white supremacy is being marked on the walls. Lewis is able to awaken Americans so they can realize how their actions are wounding African Americans. In addition, Lewis is representing the African American community so they can feel inspired to join the Civil Rights Movement. Possibly the speaker is trying to drag the African Americans out of their state of oblivion by incentivizing them to defend their rights. Lewis is addressing the problems to both audiences so they can feel the urge to fix them. Therefore, Lewis’ remarks in the first paragraph reveal that he identifies with the concerns of African Americans and how whites, mainly activists, should focus on addressing their issues.
In his essay “ In Defense of Prejudice”, Jonathan Rauch explores a much talked about topic in the United States today, prejudice. As his title implies, he is in defense of prejudice, he makes it clear that he is not a supporter of hate or racism, rather a supporter of “intellectual pluralism” “which permits the expression of various forms of bigotry and always will.” (pg 1). Rauch defends the right to express all forms of bigotry. By utilizing specific examples where prejudice is at center stage, Rauch tries to convince his readers that the solution to prevent prejudice is not attempting to eradicate it, rather he believes if we, as a society channel prejudice more effectively we can make it “socially productive.” Ranch defends his
Wise’s examination of the inconspicuous character of racism 2.0 dovetails fittingly with our course’s recurring theme of institutionalized racism. In class lectures we have defined institutionalized racism as the discriminatory practices that have become regularized and routinized by state agencies, organizations, industries, or anywhere else in society. Although such practices might not be intentionally racist, they end up being racist nevertheless as consequence of the systematized and unspoken biases that have become increasingly convoluted and entrenched within society over time. It also doesn’t help white people to recognize these discriminatory practices considering they have been unconsciously tailored to be consistent with white perspective and mentality. In her article, White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack, Peggy McIntosh examines not only how white folks often consider themselves to be a normative figure within society, but also how they are carefully taught not to recognize the advantages they gain from the disadvantages that impair people of color. In the article, McIntosh acknowledges the reality of her own white privilege and expresses, “In my class and place, I did not see myself as a racist because I was taught to recognize racism only in individual acts of meanness by members of my group, never in invisible systems conferring unsought racial dominance on my group from birth” (McIntosh 4). Lindner, a white person and a representative of the Clybourne Park Improvement Association delineates the racial prejudice possessed by the white people of his community through his actions. He uses the non-violent tactics persuading the Younger family in a polite way so they do not move to his society of white people only. As he starts explaining about the purpose of the association, he uses the language style which could be interpreted in two ways so that he does not sound rude to the family, since he wants them to agree to his terms. He clearly states that the association exists to solve “special community problems” which is indeed termed for Younger’s move into the Clybourne society, which is a symbol of racial hatred,however, keeping it confusing for the family. In addition, he uses “brotherhood” as rather than coming to the straight point of not wanting the Younger family to move into the Clybourne society, he states, “Most of the trouble exists because people just don’t sit down and talk to each other” (116). He does not openly states his clear intension but builds upon his talk point by point convincing the Younger family to an extent that he is just thinking about both the communities. After all the convincing, double meaning statements, he lays down the intension of the white people living in his community about not wanting a colored family to live with them and further, offers them the money gathered by the collective effort of the society to not move into the society, which is even more than the money mama had paid to buy the house, and calls it a “financial gain” to the family. For Shelby, it seems as though Garcia contends an individual’s “attitudes” not his or her “beliefs” are what make the individual racist (479). Still, Shelby maintains that “beliefs are essential to and even sufficient for racism” (480). Basically, Shelby argues that in order to determine whether a person is racist or not, the reasons for one’s dislike of another must be evaluated. Shelby gives the hypothetical case of Stephen (white) disliking Andre (black) because Andre was having an affair with Stephen’s wife. In this example, Shelby illustrates that Stephen’s derives his dislike of Andre from Andre’s behavior not his race (480). Thus, Shelby raises the question of what racism actually signifies. Rather than disliking someone simply on the basis of skin color, Shelby suggests that is has a “deeper meaning” (480).

After the civil war ended many blacks and whites especially in the south, continued living as if nothing had changed with regards to the oppressions and poor treatment of African Americans. Narrator Grant Wiggins, of the novel A Lesson Before Dying, By Ernest Gaines, finds himself in a similar situation towards racism. Through his experience Grant is forced to transform Jefferson who was wrongly accused of a murder from a “HOG” into a man.
