When one thinks of heroes, names such as Ghandi, Martin Luther King, and Mother Theresa often come to mind. These people had done a lot of favors, courage, helps, and more of things for the people who needed them. The true definition of hero is a man of distinguished valor. Bravery, courage, intrepidity, boldness, daring, and prowess in war are a hero’s characteristics. However a hero is understood to be different to everyone. Upon closer examination, many different qualities than these become apparent. The definition of heroism changes with the context and time. Heroes of the past are not necessarily heroes of present time and vise versa. A person can be a hero for saving the life of one or of millions.

A Hero is defined by the Merriam-Webster dictionary as "a man admired for his achievements and noble qualities" . This means that a hero is someone people look up to. Anyone can be a hero. Heroes have qualities such as bravery, strength, and selflessness. Mothers, soldiers, and Odysseus are all examples of heroes.

What is a hero? Many generations have pondered this question and each has their own definition. Some look at people like Joan of Arc and Charlemagne as heroes, others see super stars and pop artists as heroes. But one can only, truly be a hero if they are selfless, if they are humble, and if they suffer. Take Bilbo Baggins, from J. R. R. Tolkien’s epic novel, The Hobbit, for example. Many would and do not look at him as a hero, but more of a journeyman or burglar. But if you look deeper, you will see that he is indeed a hero.

A hero is someone who is admired and valued for their courage, outstanding achievements, and noble qualities. A hero to one person may not be a hero to another. I strongly agree with this definition for a hero to a person is not always a hero to others. In saying this, my hero is Isabelle Bruce Reid because she was the first female to qualify in Australia as a veterinarian. Joseph Campbell, however, is less sexist and defines a hero as someone who makes a sacrifice in order to complete an action. Martin Luther King Jr. sacrificed his life and his family’s life while he was marching the streets against the discrimination of African Americans.

Mrs. Dubose could not be a hero in many ways. She was a morphine addict for years and years and this does not show the true meaning of heroism. She basically revolved her live around a drug which is not a hero. She tells Jem to come and read to her, but the experience didn’t show a hero, it created someone who they are afraid of.

What does it mean to be a hero?  According to Webster, a hero is someone "of great strength [and] courage" who is "admired" for his or her "courage and nobility."1  Stretching this definition a bit further, I would argue that a hero is someone who uses this strength, courage, and nobility to help or save others.  Nora Helmer, in Henrik Ibsen's A Doll's House, leaves her husband and family at the end of the play-a move that can be viewed as either very selfish or very heroic.  Because Nora uses her strength and courage in effort to save others and herself from the false "doll's house" life they are living in, her final act of leaving home is truly heroic.  Nora saves
