Everyday music engulfs us whether we are watching a show, listening to the radio, or shopping at a grocery store. Music gives humans the ability to express oneself when there is no other way. Music sparks more creativity, emotions and brain function than any other activity.

Prior to this class I had been in both chorus and band, along with general music classes through fifth grade. Although, I did not have very much knowledge on music history or the many different music composers. My knowledge in music was mainly revolved around music theory and harmony. When the semester began I was not positive what was in store for me, however what I was sure about was two things. One, I would love whatever we learn for I have a deeply rooted love for music. And two, I would leave this class with an abundance of knowledge. Now that it is the end of the semester I can say with confidence that both of these are true Different aspects of this class and several pieces of information will be spoken about thoroughly in the next number of paragraphs.

Music is an extremely important part of human life and has been part of human life for thousands of years. Music can be linked with many different art forms such as art and language; these too are distinct expressions of humans. Over decades and the different civilizations all over the world, humans have had to adapt to their surroundings. Humans have had to create and think of different ideas to overcome obstacles that came along. Throughout civilizations, humans have created music for many different reasons. I believe music helped humans get through tough times and used music for numerous different reasoning’s.

“The system of understanding characteristics of that individual’s society, or of some subgroup within that society” (Trumbull and Pacheco 1). For example, being American could be your cultural identity, but for as long as you live in America you will be classified as an American and in that ethnic group. Being an American can be known as the main society, but an example of a subgroup could be Music and its culture within itself. Music is the society I personally belong in and is classified as my ethnic or cultural group. Music helps with my cultural identity because that is how I relate to the society that is around me and helps enhance my ethnic identity. Music also enhances my heritage because I am going to try to start a tradition of playing music in a band and try and influence the next generations of the family to play music. Music completely changes my perspective of the world and how I see others.

Harmony is the vital element of the music because it creates the pace, phase, and the sound of a melody. In essence, for a song to achieve its musicality, it must have harmony. Harmony is one of the aspects that make the music sweet in the people’s ears. The intervals, octaves and many other elements of music make up the harmony implying that music cannot be music without harmony. The key to creating a harmony is incorporating and embracing the uniqueness of the individual notes. As a pianist and a ballet dancer, I am quite familiar with this concept in its literal sense. In regard to my personal interpretation of this concept, I believe that I was able to find harmony in my identity by embracing my cultural diversity. As a proud daughter of Ghanaian immigrants, I have chosen to embrace the aspects of both American and Ghanaian culture that I value the most to serve as the foundation of my identity.
