It was 1:49 pm, 30 seconds until my use of mass media would be completely banned. My heart was racing, my brain trying to reprocess the thoughts of no music, netflix, youtube or even books. In those 30 seconds I also realized that maybe this wouldn’t be as bad as I made it out to be. I knew it would be a laborious task but it was conquerable. After class my first instinct was to pull out my headphones and listen to some music during my walk to the library. Then I came to the realization that listening to music wasn’t an option for the next few days. I spent that walk trying to communicate with some friends on the phone but failed. Afterwards when I met up with my brother I tried to start a conversation with him but he was too busy tampering with his phone.
On my way home I tried to look out the window of the train and bus to observe but all I saw were billboards and advertisements. I had an everyday routine of listening to music and just staring out into space until I got home, but observing made me realize the amount of mass media that is around me. The next day I decided I was tired of sitting around, so I pulled out my flute and played some songs I knew. Usually I look up PDFs of sheet music for notes but since I couldn't do that, I played some songs I knew from the top of my head in different ranges. I took a walk to the local library where I volunteer, I had to read some instructions and books to kids there. This break from the assignment felt relaxing since I was able
Art has undoubtedly become a decisive aspect of our culture; embedded in the way we learn and grow on a daily basis. Art forms such as music, television and dance dominate our society as an outlet of freedom of speech for humanity. The evolution of music has rapidly exceeded its original classifications, developing new genres with greater appeal to an audience, hence its influence on society has expedited. In recent times, lyrics (specifically rap lyrics) have been introduced into the court room as a form of documented confessional evidence, evidently challenging law’s authoritative nature. This essay will closely follow the genre of rap and its relationship with law, through cases based in the United States of America (USA). In addition, the trial of Simon Bikindi in Rwanda and Smith v The Queen will be used to form an acute analysis on the influencing factors of relevance, identity, freedom of speech and current constitutional law.
Music has been known throughout time. It can help us through everything. There are so many solutions with music to help a person go through so many situations. Music can affect many people in many different ways. Without music some people would be lost and would have no motivation. Music can provide inspiration and insight through education. Music has influence on suicides, killings and shootings, and provocative actions. It can also influence good morals, respect, allowing differences, health, and much more. Music can come in many forms and categories and music is very good for the world.
Although technique and natural talent are big factors in music performing, it is suggested that a major skill needed for a developing music performer is the ability to sight-read (Paul), which is an important factor in acquiring and expanding music literacy (Gromko). However, music literacy is a compositional ability that requires many different abilities (Gromko, Lehmann and Ericson).
Popular music is often one of the best lenses we have through which to view our own cultural orientation. Many of the artistic and experimental shifts in popular music have mirrored changes in our own society. For instance, the emergence of Elvis Presley as a public figure would signal the start of a sexual revolution and the growth in visibility of a rebellious youth culture. Similarly, the folk and psychedelic music of the 1960s was closely entangled with the Civil Rights, anti-war and social protest movements. In this regard, we can view popular music as an artifact through which to better understand the time and place in which it is produced. In light of this, the state of popular music today may suggest troubling things about our society.
Modern day pop music only differs slightly from the perspectives of a consumer or listener while taking the aspects of sound, conception, and behavior into consideration. Sound being the literal sound generated from pop’s rhythm and beat. Conception the history of modern pop, where it came from, and why it is relevant today; and behavior being how the genre can affect mood and behavior. All three aspects will contrast two similar, but distinctly different perspectives derived from personal experience with both; however, with a stronger emphasis on a consumer perspective. Beginning by marking the differences between that of a consumer and a listener. While both perspectives want similar things from their pop music, they both go about it differently and influence the genre in different ways.
Although the United States government is currently engaged in stopping foreign civil rights atrocities, it turns a blind eye to violence acted out against African Americans within its borders (PR N., 2014, para. 4). In South Carolina, the “rebel flag hang[s] from the state house walls” (Bryan, 1994, line 2), serving as a constant reminder of the institutionalized racism that reflects U.S. social tensions today. Another discriminatory racial injustice that occurred during the 1990s was the Anti-Drug Act of 1986. Possession of 5 grams of crack (90% of crack defendants were African American) and 500 grams of powder cocaine (more popular with
Music is a part of everyday life for people. People listen to it on the radio on their way to and from work, while working on a project, and when people are relaxing. Music has become integrated into our society and has been proven to help people comprehend. Well done music connects to an audience and has an underlying message. When people hear and acknowledge this message they relate and they can then therefore understand what the composer was doing. This can be clearly shown in movies. Modern day T.V shows and movies have some soundtrack or song being played in the background. These songs typically connect with the audience and are there to support whatever events are occurring at that time. Most kids when they are told they are reading Shakespeare dread it. This is because Shakespeare wrote in a language that was around over 400 years ago. The style of his writing isn’t what people are used to. However, when plays and books are paired up with music for their events, just like on T.V and in movies, it helps people understand what is going on. If Julius Caesar was made into a movie now, it would need music to fit each scene so people watching would
A chaotic time period started my first year of high school. I expected this time period to be filled with new experiences, new relationships, and overall positivity. Unfortunately, this time period was surrounded by uncontrollable sadness and constant worrying. I never felt so exhausted in my life, yet I always got eight hours of sleep. Music in this time period was the only thing I had to allow
Nowadays radio stations and televisions are showing only mainstream, major label bands on their stations and channels. What people mostly do not know is there is another world of music out there for their listening: indie music. The reason people do not know about indie music is that these stations and channels will not make as much money from these smaller record labels as they would from the major labels that are Sony BMG, Universal Music Group, and Warner Music Group. Indie music is a co-culture of major label music but in its own right is a culture by itself on its own.
Coming home and getting the mail went from an exciting daily ritual to a dreadful one. If it wasn’t an unpaid bill or a knock on the door it was the notice of foreclosure on the kitchen island along with loud screams from my mother arguing with my father about why the bills hadn’t been paid. Although they weren’t together it was still his house, and by the way he waived homelessness as a constant threat in our face I’m certain he knew it too. Depression took an easy route into my life during that time. My grades suffered after that, AP and honor classes that use to excite me just didn’t seem worth it anymore, major spats with friends seemed miniscule, conversations became an effort, and all around life went from a daily list of adventures and experiences to exhausting tasks. After months of this I became very overwhelmed, so I dived into the books one more time only to finish school
Music is the most influential form in the media. Since we learn more through hearing, music have authority over how we develop our ideas. For example, when a child listen to a song that talks about racial discrimination, he or she will develop a positive or negative idea about the subject depending on what the song is transmitting. Nowadays, nine out of ten children or teenagers have open access to a music player of any kind; without the supervision of their parents, they can freely listen to any song they please. Music can educate and promote social awareness among people, but it can also influence listeners on a negative way. The word used of several artists in different genres affects that messages their songs are trying to transmit, for
In the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century, the United States was remade to a new world. With huge numbers of the immigrants into U.S, the rapid growth of the cities as well as the beginning of mass culture, U.S had gone through the industrialization and U.S itself had changed in many aspects. Music was one of them. At the very first, music was only known within a village or a city. It was not spread out the whole nation. However, with the industrialization, music was brought to many people throughout the country. Commercials, advertisements, and economic industry played a quite expressed role in order to promote music to be known. Within the rise of the mass
When musicians produce albums, they want people to listen to the albums. There is not one specific way for a band or single musician to gain an audience and promote their music. Musicians use many different kinds of media to promote their music. They use visual media as well as strictly listening media. The radio, television, and the internet are all different types of media musicians use to promote their music.
Giving up media for one day was particularly hard. Not because I couldn’t stant now doing things such as watch TV, or sift through social media, but because I felt as if I lost something the whole time, or that I was forgetting something, and I felt oddly relaxed at times in which I usually am not calm. It was difficult not having my phone to see what time it was, and it was nerve racking not to have it just in case something where to happen while I was driving too and from school. The only person I talk to on a daily basis anymore is my boyfriend, and sadly to admit we even sleep on facetime audio through the night, (he’s practically my third alarm clock) which made it also very unnerving to ensure that I will actually wake up for my class the following day. I constantly caught myself feeling like I had forgot something, my hand felt empty which made me freak out. I also spaced on the fact that I typically have a wallet case on my phone that holds my drivers liscence and creditcards, so I kept finding myself having a moment of panic because I thought I lost it all.
There is proven knowledge on the impact of mass media and music consumption, and how it can play a vital role in the development of adolescents and self- identity. Due to majority of teens consuming music with an estimation of 18 hours per week (Arnett, 2002; Escobar-Chaves et al., 2005; Ward &Friedman, 2006), the exposure to music has been directly associated with numerous health outcomes for the consuming teen (Martino, 2006; Wingwood et al., 2003). There have been numerous studies that have previously examined the relationship between the exposure of sexual content in music and how it can affect the sexual behaviors of adolescents (Pardun, 2005). Based on this contextual analysis, I was able to review how media and explicit music lyrics and how it impacts young girls’ ideas of sexuality and self-identity (Berger, 2015). Based on of the lyric analysis I conducted utilizing Cooper’s review, results assessed 20 Top Billboard Hits, for the sexualization in a portrayal of women in top trending music lyrics. These results differed than Cooper’s findings due to the period periods of the songs examined and quantity of songs. This paper is generalizable to this discussion and sample, it only looked at 20 songs, and if increased could be used to determine data on a larger scale.
