Music also has shown to be effective in affecting one’s behavior. Our choice of music can be a reflection of our personal attitudes (). Moreover, dopamine, which is a neurotransmitter that plays a major role in our reward-motivated behavior, can be enhanced or attenuated through music listening in our brain, and hence, has an impact to our sensations (VNS). Music is a tool that touches the world and does not require anyone to understand the words to hear its voice. It is something innate to every living human being that does not have to be taught, but is just felt or expressed. Music has been appreciated by people throughout time, enjoyed and celebrated from Beethoven, Bach and Mozart to AD/DC, Beyonce and Prince and will continue to be revered so long as man is free to play it. Music is also feared by many as it can unite a people, prompt the march of an army, express the feelings of the repressed, create an entire new group of people, or even be the tune to topple a dynasty. This was proven by the people known as the “Hippies” as this class of people rallied behind bands such as Janis Joplin, The Who or Jimi Hendrix, with none being more prominent than the Beatles. Music has an influence on society in a greater way than any can imagine, just take a look at the sixties and their figurehead The Beatles and how they did not make people hate the war in Vietnam, nothing in their lyrics says anything about the war. They just brought together like-minded people who started a revolution and changed the perspective on an entire altercation. But like Steven Stark says, “’Why on earth would anyone need another work [book] about the Beatles?’” and this is quite true if it wasn’t for the fact that most works written on this innovative group are bibliographies or dissections of the musical prowess. Instead,
Rock is a music genre which is “a form of popular music that evolved from rock and roll
Art has undoubtedly become a decisive aspect of our culture; embedded in the way we learn and grow on a daily basis. Art forms such as music, television and dance dominate our society as an outlet of freedom of speech for humanity. The evolution of music has rapidly exceeded its original classifications, developing new genres with greater appeal to an audience, hence its influence on society has expedited. In recent times, lyrics (specifically rap lyrics) have been introduced into the court room as a form of documented confessional evidence, evidently challenging law’s authoritative nature. This essay will closely follow the genre of rap and its relationship with law, through cases based in the United States of America (USA). In addition, the trial of Simon Bikindi in Rwanda and Smith v The Queen will be used to form an acute analysis on the influencing factors of relevance, identity, freedom of speech and current constitutional law.
Several disease conditions are caused by an excess or deficiency of dopamine, for example, Parkinson’s disease and cardiovascular disease. Patients undergo dopamine therapeutic use through listening to music. (Mandal, 2012) In the medical field, music is used in many ways; Music not only affects the heart rate but also has the ability to reduce anxiety, relieving symptoms of depression and easing pain. (Stuttgart, 2009) A research has shown that cheerful, light-hearted music can promote vascular health, which is a crucial part of the body. (Miller, Beach, & Mangano, 2008) In recent years, music is used to relax, ease stress or alleviate pain before, after and even during surgery. (Steakley, 2012) For example, during a diagnosis of prostate
Today’s music is more often than not criticized for it’s content and its representation for us as a society. Certain songs I will agree on this, they are pointless and say nothing good about our society and where we heading for our future. However, there are songs out there that are from today’s music that speak for so much of us. They say the things we can’t and point out what is wrong with our world today and how we can fix it. They have deeper meaning if you would just look for it. For examples, John Legend’s Glory and Lyfe Jennings’ If Tomorrow Never Comes are two songs from today’s music that speak to so many of us. They make you believe that this society has hope to be better. The lyrics are deep and the understanding of them will make you want to join a movement to make this world a better place.
One of music’s stimulating effects it causes is instant motivation, hearing a song that moves not only the body but the mind pushes us to accomplish extraordinary things. We are able to push are body’s and thoughts to heights we wouldn’t have reached without hearing a motivational song. A study of jogging explains that running with a motivational song makes you likely to run longer. The song changes are mental endurance and draws are attention away from the discomfort and tiredness we start to feel. 75% of athletes before the start of a game play a motivational song to get their minds more focused and ready to play, this same concept has been used numerous amounts of people whether it be an athlete or a student before a test.
No one can deny that technology is actively changing the music industry. Production, distribution and sales of music have been affected dramatically within the last 10 years along with artists, composers, and technicians. Most of the changes have been great for consumers, but vastly negative for professionals in the music industry, however a few artists have found ways to adapt to the changing atmosphere of digitally downloaded music and use it to their advantage. We’ve seen music change form from physical, tangible products like records and CD’s to electronic single tracks stored in an invisible cloud. Two major factors in this sudden revolution are online music stores (specifically iTunes) and file sharing websites that allow music to be downloaded illegally.
When the world is in a troubled spot, a lot of times we look up to celebrities, such as singers, who often protest and inspire change through their music. Lyrics can be very deep and emotional, and several artists frequently use their songs to speak up about controversial issues. Music videos can also make strong visual aids that raise awareness. Michael Jackson, John Lennon, and Paul McCartney. Three artists who knew change was needed in the world, and who used their talent to voice opinions and speak to people.
Music has impacted our world in many ways, and it does not start with us. It has its beginnings with our ancestors. Music has not only been known for “vocal or instrumental sounds combined in such a way as to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion” but also for a way that you can express your emotions, aim social problems or entertainment. Music has been evolving since it was first introduced to our world, and each era has had their own ups and downs with gender equalities, racism, political problems, and acceptance of the society. For example, 1960s was a decade marred by social unrest, civil rights injustice, and violence both home and abroad. These were some of the factors that lead to a cultural revolution. During these times, we could see how many artists aimed at these concerns through their lyrics, but the eighties had a big impact in our society. During this decade, The United States felt more liberalistic, and New ideologies were presented to our society, also Sex and drugs became the focus of many of the lyrics expressed by the artists. The eighties were a different decade. People in The United States felt free to achieve anything that they would wanted to. The 1980s reflected the beginning of a period of great income disparity and a focus on affluence was reflected in the music, but “when it came to music during the decade, nothing was understated, not the sound, not the fashion, not even the charity” The impact of music on society was greater
The impact of music on positive psychology and emotion is a well known fact. Music has an extraordinary ability to change people’s emotions. In humans, music has the ability to invoke emotions of sadness, happiness and even fear (Goycoolea, Levy & Ramirez, 2013). The ability of music to alter human mood makes it one of the greatest subjects of positive psychology. Seligman (2011) argued that even though a lot of effort has been spent on psychotherapy and pharmacology, such interventions are not
Musical revolutions can be defined by three key aspects which are: the venues music was made in, the way the audience listened to the music, and the way the music was disseminated. These are unique in that there is no clear separation between them and at times some of the changes that have been made can impact all three at the same time. The age in which we live in is experiencing all of these aspects to one degree or another. It is difficult for someone my age to understand that we are living in a music revolution the likes of which has never been seen before.
Music has been apart of society for a long time. It has benefited a lot of people in different ways. It is very exciting and interesting. Music creates new vibes, fashion trends, and can give great advice. Music is very motivational and inspirational. It may express emotions and new ideas for many people and is also meant to entertain and stimulate the mind.
Music elicits an emotional and cognitive response in all who listen to it. It is powerful at the individual level because “it can induce multiple responses – physiological, movement, mood, emotional, cognitive, and behavioral” (Francis, 2008,
It seems that music has been in existence since humans have been on this earth. You can find music in all forms and styles. The types of music and preferences that people may have, can change depending on what city, state or even country you live in. The United States was founded on basic constitutional human rights. One of these rights is freedom of speech. Those who are talented musicians have used freedom of speech to be able to put into words, sound and feelings of the social injustices that have happened since the United States was formed. Music has been the outlet to sing about sexism, racism, poverty and many other inequalities that have impacted us as human beings. There have been several musicians throughout the span of time who have made an impact on society through their music. This paper will examine three of those artists; Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan and Madonna. All of these artists have a different background, different influences but they all had a story to tell.
Music has survived throughout the course of human history because it has always been such a huge part of the human life. Music allows us to feel joy, sadness and fear.
