Antonia was admired for her great strength and integrity that gave her the determination never to give up. Antonia suffered many hardships in her life but remained free spirited through all her struggles. Most people would have giving up but she made the best of her circumstances.
From the time Antonia got on the wagon to head for Nebraska with her family it seemed her life was a hard one. When Antonia finally arrived in Nebraska she had to live in a cave with very little food for the family. The family had been living on corncakes and sorghum molasses for three days. Antonia spoke Bohemian and only knew a few words in English which made it hard for her to communicate at first but she took English lessons from Jim and learned quickly. …show more content…

Ántonia stood up, lifting and dropping her shoulders as if they were stiff. "I ain't got time to learn. I can work like mans now. My mother can't say no more how Ambrosch do all and nobody to help him. I can work as much as him. School is all right for little boys. I help make this land one good farm." Several years later she got a job working for a family in town. She worked hard while living in town learning how to cook and sew. While living in town she met Larry Donovan the man she wanted to marry. Antonia's marriage never happened but she did become pregnant while away. She returned to Nebraska to have her baby even though she knew she would be looked down upon for having a child out of wedlock. I went away feeling that I must see Ántonia again. Another girl would have kept her baby out of sight, but Tony, of course, must have its picture on exhibition at the town photographer's, in a great gilt frame. How like her! Antonia eventually met and married another man and started a family of her own. Antonia's new life did not make it any easier for her. She worked hard getting her home and the fields ready for her new family. The
