My Antonia Stereotypes

In the novel My Antonia author Willa Cather appealingly portrays characters that disregard stereotypical gender roles. Not only in the main characters, Antonia Shimerdas and Jim Burden, but also in many of the lesser characters presented in the novel. The relevance of these non stereotypical gender roles become apparent in the unfolding of the characters through Jim’s narration. This novel analyzes the changes in young women in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries towards traditional roles. In this novel we can assume that women like to make their own choices, rather than to follow their expected roles. We see the typical gender role again when Antonia is surviving on her own while still being able to take care of her family. Her hard work and sincere concerns allow forgiveness of her masculinity at home. …show more content…

We quickly learn that Antonia has a mixture of female and male stereotypes throughout the story. Towards the beginning of the novel, after Antonia’s father's death, she is working for her family to survive. Not only does she work in the house as the maid, she also insists on working outside in the fields with the men to earn money. “Oh, better I like to work out-of-doors than in a house! Antonia said. “I not care that your grandmother say it makes me like a man. I like to be like a man.“ Antonia is very proud of her strong muscles, and dirty hands, as she loves showing them off and working outside in the fields. The gender stereotype for Antonia takes a huge shift when she moves to town, She takes on the more typical female gender role.
