My Antonia Theme Analysis

The book My Antonia carried many themes throughout the book, along with many different ideas. In this particular section (pages 240-264), the theme was reminiscence. In this part of the reading, Jim returns to visit Antonia on two separate occasions. Each time, Jim and Antonia relive the memories of their past. Throughout the book, the idea of reminiscence is found in the tone/mood, the characters, and the setting. Willa Cather’s book, My Antonia, displays a recurring theme of reminiscence.
In My Antonia, the tone of the author reflected how they felt towards the situation. In this case, the writer looked upon the past with fondness. At one point when Jim and Antonia were talking, Antonia says, “I’m so glad we had each other when we were little.”(p. 251) These words show the tone of the section. They look back at the past and their experiences with a positive attitude. They had their ups and downs, especially due to the move here and how rough it was at first, but they ultimately look back at the past and feel good. They felt nostalgic towards the old days. This tone of happiness is reflected in the mood the reader feels when they read the story. Though, in a way, they lived similar lives growing up, they each recall the past in their own way. Antonia tells many of her children about her history and how wonderful, but also tough, it was. She tells them of her Bohemian memories and all her adventures with Jim. “I can’t wait till my little girl’s old enough to tell her all about the things we used to do.” (p. 251) In contrast, Jim looks back the old days, not by talking to others but by recalling his accounts in his mind and on paper.
