My artifact is my Baptismal gown that I wore when I was months. The gown is about two and a half feet long and is a creamy white color. It is made of both silk and lace. There are two white ribbons hanging from the back that tie into a bow. The collar has an embroidered pattern and the waistline has five flowers made of white lace. The dress has long sleeves that have cuffs with one button on each arm. A strip of lace that is two and a half inches wide wraps around the middle of the skirt part of the dress. The hem is also made of white lace. My Baptismal gown is very special to me because it is a symbol of God’s love for the Church and for me. The white color represents Christ dying to forgive our sins. It symbolizes purity and innocence
The city of Jerusalem has been recognized as the holy city throughout the history of three religions: Judaism, Christianity and Islam. During the time of Judaism, Biblical writers presented Jerusalem as the most sacred space, the center of the world, and the city of the Lord. A leading interpreter of religious texts, Mircea Eliade, in his book The Sacred and The Profane, defined several religious experiences with specific terminologies, such as hierophany, which means the sign of sacredness, and axis mundi, which is the center of the world. These terminologies will help us in interpreting how the biblical writers promote Jerusalem as the holy city. In the Hebrew Bible Genesis 1-3, 22, 2 Samuel 6-8, 1 King 6-8, the writers reveal Jerusalem
The white garment symbolizes the white garments Jesus wore when he was placed in the tomb after his death on Good Friday. An infant may wear a baptismal gown handed down for generations; an adult typically puts on a full-length white gown known as an alb’. (Gospel way, online, 2014) However, Jew’s believe in idea of Adulthood. Rather than initiating an infant, they wait for the boy or girl to become an adult in the eyes of the Jewish law. The religious ceremony of a boy's Bar Mitzvah is held in the synagogue. Many guests are invited, this includes important people of the Jewish community. “The child is given a special prayer shawl called a Tallit. When the child wears one at their Bar Mitzvah, it is a visual representation of their new status as an adult.” (Tracey. R. Rich, Bar Mitzvah, online, 2011) The child carries the Torah to the podium, they are called to read or chat from the Torah (the Torah is the Jewish holy scrolls and is written in Hebrew). Usually only adults are allowed to read from the Torah in the synagogue, but since the Bar Mitzvah symbolises the child's coming-of-age in the Jewish culture, he is seen as a grown adult and is able to read the torah in

Gorgeous beading, glittering sequins, and pearly white are some of the words brides use to describe their wedding dresses. Once weddings are over, brides normally take every precaution to preserve this most expensive, treasured, and prized item. Even after years of marriage, wives fondly recall the hours spent searching for the perfect dress and playfully ponder whether the beauty still fits. However, in contrast to the typical feelings associated with a bride’s wedding dress, a close reading of James Galvin’s poem “On the Sadness of Wedding Dresses” offers a unique perspective of worn wedding dresses.
The artifact I chose during the museum tour was the artifact called Parthian Rhyton. The Parthian Rhyton is from Iran from the time 150 BC – AD 225. It is made up of Silver with mercury gliding. This artifact reflects the style of its culture by having the goat in an attack position with the head down lets up this piece reflects power and strength. The piece identifies it as being from a particular civilization and time of the naturalism of the goat, with its carefully detailed horns and swirling coat, is characteristic of such vessels in the subsequent Parthian period (247-224 AD), along with the highlighting of such details the vegetal design at the throat of the vessel with mercury gliding. The visual clues
My culture artifact is the Hina doll because it is a tradition in Japan to decorate with them for the Hinamatsuri. The Hinamatsuri is also known as "girls day". This is on March 3, and you wish girls good health and future happiness. The Hinamatsuri's origin was during the Heian period. The people would set afloat straw hina dolls and sent it down a river, which led to an ocean. This was used to take bad spirits away. The hina dolls are displayed on a hina dan. The hina dan is covered with a red carpet and the dolls are displayed on it. On the top is the imperial dolls ,which are the Emperor and the Empress. On the second platform holds the three court ladies. They are holding equipment for sake, a Japanese drink. On the third platform are
My item is the mummified hawk. The Museum of Anthropology describes that the remains of the hawk are wrapped in linen, which appears yellowish-brown and in relatively good condition. The size of the artifact isn’t given. The beak of the hawk is protruding from the linen wrappings. It also tells that this mummy came from Egypt sometime during the time period 1550 to 1069 B.C. It was probably made by the ancient Egyptians.
For my Makana Research Project, I chose to focus on the traditional Hawaiian lei. I chose this object due to the fact that in all my years of being a student, the concept of dress and clothing items of the Hawaiian people was never something that I learned about in depth. I never knew what different colors symbolized, or that there could be a deeper spiritual meaning to simple clothing items like headpieces. Learning about the hidden meanings and importance of traditional clothing items has been an interesting thing for me, as I am used to studying historical events like wars and battles.
For my artifact I constructed a document. Documents hold all sorts of information. In this case, these documents were from World War I. Knowing background information about the past is useful especially for World War 2. In this case for World War I, soldiers did not have any background information on wars for the reason that it was the first war to occur. Civilians during World War II, took inspiration and took the mistakes that soldiers messed up in WW1 as an opportunity to learn from their mistakes. In order to not repeat history again. Documents were used in order to keep track of special events that would occur during the time. In this case, this was something that the civilians based off of for World War 2, to know what types of battles
Artifacts comes in so many different shapes or form. It could hold personal memories, feelings, or even value. The artifact I chose to share is my necklace.
The color white has many meanings ranging from innocence to light. For weddings, a white
On the main portal of the Autun Cathedral, the Last Judgment is on display in the tympanum, and depicted in the center is Christ who is enthroned in a mandorla, that is being held on either side by angels. Each side is divided into two scenes with the architrave underneath. The upper scene shows the Virgin Mary enthroned and two apostles watching the judgment. In the lower scene, to the right of Christ, eight apostles stand, facing the enthroned figure in the manner of petitioners. Represented in the arcade structure, St Peter is shown with keys and is guarding the entrance to the heaven where those that have been resurrected are l trying to squeeze in with the help of an
When I first walked into the room where this piece was exhibited I was immediately drawn to its ornate details and rather bright colors compared to the other objects that were displayed next to this one. The worn primary colors contrasted with the browns of the
Bridal wear plays a large role in these customs, people as far back as Queen Victoria wearing large white dresses to their weddings. Contemporary bridal wear is often less ornate with simple embellishment which has inspired my garment as well as often being available as separates for ease of customising a look for the bride. The classic ballgown silhouette is one that originated in the period era to emphasis the narrow waist that was desired of a woman and has, in modern times, resurfaced as a popular style for gowns for red carpet and other formal events as my ensemble is designed to be, bringing a more contemporary life into a classic
Baptism is the first of three Sacraments of Initiation in Catholicism, the other two being Confirmation and Eucharist. Through Baptism we are combined into the body of Christ. Baptism is celebrated by pouring water onto the child, teenager or adults head with the priest saying, " I baptise you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit". For parents who want to get their child baptized in the name of God they would have to ask their local priest if it’s possible and if the parents are able to cope with the responsibility of raising their child in the catholic faith.
