Before the battle, Union general Ulysses S. Grant started a siege of Vicksburg which would shut down the Mississippi River. The Confederacy was going on the offensive and was beginning to venture into Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Washington D.C. They encountered Union troops as they advanced towards Harrisburg where they planned to cut off Union supply lines and to steal provisions that they needed. Lee hoped that a victory in the north would help increase the peace movement which was gathering some support there. This, along with the weakening of the Union army, may initiate talks of surrender by the Federal Army. The battle of Gettysburg was one of the most important battles in the Civil War. If I was a Union soldier on cemetery ridge or little round top, I would be scared. Imagine bullets tearing down your friends around you, blood spattering the ground and yourself. I would be thinking “imgoingtodieimgoingtodieimgoingtodie” over and over. However, I would grasp onto that little light at the end of tunnel, hope. I would feel tortured inside, but I’d have to kill fellow human beings to save my own life. I would wonder if this was the most ethical way to settle a problem. But I would have to kill other soldiers, and that would kill me inside. With the fear of getting killed, the adrenaline rushing through my veins, taking the shot to end one life, and save another. And I would have to face this internal conflict over and over until it was safe, or until another soldier decided to make that same decision and chose me as their target. This is what I would feel if I was a Union soldier in the battle of Gettysburg.

Am I my brother’s keeper? I have continuously asked myself this question since I was a child. My understanding of the question continues to grow, as I get older and wiser. In my opinion, people are more inclined to develop thoughts about their legacies as they age. My case is no different. When I have the time to meditate and just think, I often wonder about it. How will others remember me? How did I affect the world? These questions, along with a burning desire to heal (in any capacity whether it is spiritual, physical or mental), have strongly influenced my decision to become a cardiologist. I believe that my disadvantaged upbringing, uniqueness, and desire to see change in deprived communities will help me achieve my dream: making a difference as a cardiologist.
