Throughout the many years I have lived, my interest and views on literature have been continually shifted. In the early stages of my childhood, before I even entered the education system, reading was an activity that I truly enjoyed during my pastime. My interest in reading began with glamorous picture books with colorful illustrations as early as the age of four. My reading preference, of course, developed as I evolved into an older human being who knew how to prevent paper cuts and actually understood the meaning behind words. During elementary school, I would entertain myself by reading short novels, including books from the widely popular Magic Tree House series and several novels written by the universally adored Roald Dahl, including Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and James and the Giant Peach. My time in primary school was the peak of my love for reading. That strong compassion for literature abruptly came to an end by the time I entered junior-high. I would no longer read books as a primary option to fulfill my boredom, as watching television and playing video games were immensely more enticing to my teenage mind. From then on, reading has felt more like English homework and a chore that I would try to shirk if possible.
Don't get me wrong, it is not that I despise the thought of flipping through pages or that reading lacked adequate gratification, but I became completely sold on the magic of stories unfold on a screen with phenomenal scenery, special effects
Ever since I was in elementary school, I have had a strong fascination with literature. Overtime, I had a plethora of books lining my bookcases and barely had room for any more. Reading was a necessity to me and it still is to me today. I eat, sleep, and breath literature because I feel like it’s essential to my academic career. Literature does many wonderful things like, teach me about life lessons, transport me to a new world that I have only dreamed about going to, and discover new vocabulary.
I strongly believe when some people grow up they lose interest in reading books, you can see the many people that don’t like reading in our schools, because most of us are on our phones and reading articles. I mainly read on my phone and I enjoy that more because the articles are short and to the point quicker. Phones have changed on how much I value actual books.
I have never been as comfortable with people made of flesh and bone than I have been with those made of words. Whatever information I lose in the contours of the human face, I have no trouble locating in the unchanging, permanent text of a book. There is something about literature that felt safe to me; the worlds created within far more welcoming to little girls with problems fitting in than the one outside the pages. For this reason, fiction, from Harry Potter to The Book Thief, has remained my greatest passion ever since I learned to read.
My passion for reading began the summer before junior high, the English class I would be taking had a required summer reading list. I had no desire to read “boring books” over the summer and summarize them. Fortunately, my parents made me read the first book and I was hooked. Consequently, I became obsessed (in a positive way) with this unbelievable adventure; “The Hatchet” by Gary Paulsen; transported me to the wilderness that summer and sparked my love for reading. From that moment on reading became my favorite pastime. Literature expanded my world beyond the Rio Grande Valley I visited the “Island of the Blue Dolphins”, and decided I needed dogs with “Where the Red Fern Grows”. 1. There are numerous reasons about why Miss Narwin’s opinion of reading books differs from Philip’s opinion. The first reason is that Miss Narwin is a mature adult, who can understand literature better than children. Miss Narwin also has a love for classic literature, which not everyone shares. The second reason is that Philip would enjoy books that were written when he was growing up; it would be easier to understand and relate to for him. I concur with Miss Narwin’s point of view, as I love to read and some older books have a deeper meaning to them. I also agree with Miss Narwin, for I believe that more classic literature should be spread, so that classics won’t be forgotten. Philip’s attitude might be considered a self-fulfilling prophecy since most children would not have such a deep love towards classic literature. I viewed reading as a chore, was often unenthused, and would mostly annotate on the overarching themes without gathering any meaning from them. Books were merely a series of words printed on paper. This school year, however, I began to understand the allure reading has to offer. I have grown to appreciate reading and the insights a book can offer. When reading our numerous texts, I was able to live vicariously through the characters of the books and relate aspects of their lives to my own. Because all of the books from English I pertain to coming of age, I was able to not only learn about maturation as a process, but understand how it pertains to my own life. Through protagonists such as Holden Caulfield from The Catcher in the Rye or Esperanza from The House on Mango Street, I learned about my “misguided desire to preserve childhood innocence” and to empower feminism similar to Holden and Esperanza respectively (Heart of Gold, Raghuram). Gradually, I have finally developed the ability to relate to novels and its characters amidst writing my own story.Whether it be thematic elements or the details of a case I am working on, I have become more observant to even the most trivial details. Now when I read, I not only look at the themes, motifs, and symbols, but also repeated phrases or situations that parallel each others as well as the symbolic meaning behind some ambiguous phrases or scenes. I haven't always been keen on reading as I am today. I can’t really remember the reason for my distaste in literature, but I think it mostly came from me just thinking that reading was too difficult or I was just me being a stubborn six year old not wanting to do it, but none the less I was like this for a lot of my earlier years. As a young child, I always wondered if Dr. Seuss was a real doctor. After doing some digging, I found out that Dr. Seuss wasn’t a real doctor. I loved Dr. Seuss, and this made me question everything. This left a major impact on me, especially in my younger years. I started to question if literature was even important to me. It is a little silly, questioning literature over Dr. Seuss not being a real doctor, but that’s how it was! I would go between these phases of not reading for a while and reading everyday. Early on I questioned about whether literature was important, and speech therapy and a few people made me think one way or another.
Harry Potter, Junie B. Jones, Narnia, Lemony Snicket, Hunger Games, Lord of the Rings, Goosebumps, Magic Tree House, and the Boxcar Children: Popular book series that most kids get into. I never did. Ever since school required mandatory reading, I perceived books as hassles. School effectively turned me off of reading for pleasure. Going into middle school, where students have regular book reports and summer reading, I faced a challenge. To make it by I had to learn to live with books, as they played an integral part to my career as a student. However, my current state of mind labeled reading a hassle and wanted nothing to do with it, necessitating change. I would like to preface this essay by stating that I am not fond of reading books. Starting in elementary school, with the way literature was handled, I began perceiving reading books as an obligation, nothing more. Few of the books we were made to read over the years interested me, so I tend not to read them out of my own volition. There were exceptions, of course – I enjoyed reading Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men, for example.
My desire to read is equivalent to housework, you know it has to be done, but you never want to do it. There has to be that one driving force to get it done; that one part of you that screams get your life together and do something right. There have been good and bad moments in reading for everyone, including me. I can honestly say I am very focused while I read the letters my boyfriend sends home from basic training. Other times when I am forced to read an article for work in order to better my abilities, I would say I am less focused and driven to do my best because it is not something that interests me. You know there are better things you could be doing but you’re stuck doing the work. Having to push through to prove to others and yourself that you can do what needs to be done.
