I’ve always considered myself a fairly decent writer but we all have room to improve. I just like everyone, sometimes miss errors in my writing no matter how hard I look over my writings. People that know me often enjoy my writings because they understand my writing style or how I think but sometimes my errors that I miss deter others from enjoying my writing. I would like for more people to be able to connect with the things I am writing about, this is why I am working hard this semester to fix my errors and understand how to prevent those errors in the first place. One way that I can improve my writing is by being more attentive to what I am actually writing instead of allowing my feelings to overwhelm my thoughts. I can fix my problem of losing focus on what I am writing by going back and rereading what I have already written before continuing on. I need to focus on making sure that I am writing from a first person point of view instead of accidentally changing over to second person out of habit. After I personally proofread what I have written, I should either have a peer edit my paper or use an online resource from the classroom to help edit any mistakes I may have missed. Improving the way I write my essays is something I believe I can 100% improve on by staying focused. One strength in my writing that I have noticed so far this semester is that I am able to structure my paragraphs in a way that my writing can easily be comprehended. Acknowledging my strengths in my
What Does It Really Take to Be Great The central focus of Geoff Colvin’s article, “What It Takes to Be Great” published in October 30, 2006, is research on what it takes to be great. Colvin notes that the researchers were first curious why only certain people are able to go on improving and becoming great and that led them to study “expert performers” such as Michael Jordan, Bobby Fischer, Tiger Woods, and Berkshire Hathaway Chairman Warren Buffet to find the answer to this “irresistible question”. While many believe that practicing a lot on what is necessary to get better at makes people great, Colvin and the researchers conclude that greatness can be achieved through deliberate practice. Deliberate practice involves hard, excruciating, and painful work, but most of all; a lot of time and effort.
In my future writing, I can improve by focusing on the areas that have been brought to my attention, such as fragmented sentence structures, capitalization, punctuation, and MLA formatting mistakes. I hope to enhance my writing skills through better planning, drafting, proofreading, and revising. I can become a better writer by building upon my current writing abilities and paying more attention to my
According to the article from The Boston Globe, Josh Goldenburg, a student at Boston University, suffers from double vision and balance problems after jumping out of his house when an unexpected fire started. Universities in the Boston area don’t provide enough on-campus housing for the amount of students they accept, leading to terrible off-campus living conditions. Students are living with sometimes up to 12 people, making the houses overcrowded and living in closed off front porches and dining rooms. The owners of the house make rent very expensive because they know the kids don’t have anywhere else to live. A lot of the houses haven’t had inspections in years, causing the houses to have dangerous safety hazards and in cases like Goldenburg’s,
Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks, were given a lot of credit for the success of the Montgomery movement because of their leadership and respect throughout the black community. But, they couldn’t achieve such success without a community of people doing their part. The MIA members believed in their leaders, as a result the members had the will to protest, even at their weakest points they kept on protesting. Furthermore, there were also whites who supported the boycott in which many of them sent in money and used cars to help out the movement. The actions that led Montgomery officials to integrate the buses, was when 50,000 customers suddenly stop using the bus and over half of those customers are black. And this action impacted Montgomery
I plan to build my weaknesses in writing with practice. “Good writing is an acquired art, and it takes practice” (Bethel University, 2014, p. 4). I hope to see improvement with each essay I write. With practice and guidance from my facilitators, I hope to one day list my writing skills as a “5” on the self-assessment survey.
Writing makes possible to us expressing in a paper what we cannot communicate by talking. For this reason, the writer must make his composition readable and understandable in order to get the idea by the reader of what he is attempting to communicate. This requires a whole writing process that I have experienced thus far this semester in my English Composition I Honors Course. I have recognized what my strengths and weaknesses in writing are. So that, focusing more on my weaknesses than my strengths will help me to improve much more my writing skills by the end of the semester.
My decision on a major field of study at Western Michigan University was a process that took much thought and reflection. With my high school teachers’ strong leadership, they inspired me to possibly pursue anything as a career. The long process of finding out what I want to do with my life started in the summer when I was trying to figure out what career would best suit me for the future. Im that kind of person where I need entertainment in my life, so I narrowed it down to some jobs I can't do, such as being a business major and sitting in a office my whole life, and accounting, because I despise math. During my thinking process, I utilized what subjects I enjoyed in high school that I’d like to learn more about in college. I came to a
We can conclude from my current writing process that there is a vast amount of opportunity for me to improve my writing style and process. I hope that the exposure and participation in first year composition will develop my writing skills and habits. I am looking forward to learning more on how to improve as a writer professionally. I must now admit, I actual enjoyed writing this short description of my flawed writing
Honestly, I do not think that I have any real strengths in my writing. I always felt as if there were things that I did decently, but nothing stands out as a skill that I do particularly well in my writing. The thing that I am probably
Going into my first college English class I thought I was a decent writer but struggled with the process on getting the final product. At the beginning of the year getting all of my thoughts together, and getting them organized into my paper was a struggle. After making it through my first college English course, I fell that I have grown as a writer and improves in all aspects of writing process. I have also I have also improved my skills with critical thinking, and analyzing different writers and essays. With all of that being said there are still areas that need significant improvement to better my writing.
Mmm, you were right the rates are not very generous. I am going to be completely honest; it does put me off a little, from experience how much work will be needed to make this first course a success, which is crucial to ensuring that people feel it's worth signing up for the whole series. I would only want to do this if I can offer something meaningful and valuable. Having spent three days last week rewriting an advanced specialist course for Pilates teachers, I know just how much time these things take as I am sure you do.
Throughout life, we learn things; this can be practical things such as how to tie shoes or the fastest way to do dishes. These are simple things in life that do help, but these lessons do not help in developing as a person. I believe in the lessons we learn about how people work, and how we work, matter more than simple tasks. In The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch, a man who is dying of cancer capitalizes on these life lessons that contribute to our development as people, he introspects himself. I would like to look into myself and explain what life lessons I have learned and why they matter to me.
As I woke up this morning in the middle of my college career, I was faced with the simple choice of what to eat for breakfast. Seems like an easy enough task, but it took me fifteen minutes. At this same point in my life I am faced with the decision of quitting my job now or waiting until I start my new one in March. Not as easy of a task. The choices that I make can be right or wrong, but either way I will learn from them. If I make the right decision, good for me and my life can go on smoothly. If I make the wrong decision, then I will struggle to fix my mistake and learn from it in the process. People are faced with choices throughout life. Sometimes these choices can be as simple as left or right, while others are much more
As I read J. K. Rowling’s commencement speech for a graduating class of Harvard University, I found myself connecting with the text on a very personal level. As I reread the speech for tis assignment I was able to reconnect with the text and old memories came rising up to the surface of my mind. I connected with the following quote: “It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all- in which case, you fail by default.” Rowling’s statements regarding failure relate to the time when I failed my math class last year and how that experience changed my life.
Over the course of history, evolution has affected different species in their own unique way; the human race is one of them. With time we all can change for the better or the worst that is one of the many things that make us human. We all have different personalities and interests whether it be reading a book or wrenching on a car, that is what defines each of us individually. When I was born I may have been a regular newborn baby on the outside to the common eye but surely I was not on the inside. I was born with a heart condition that made me a million dollar baby faster then you can blink an eye spending the first eighteen months of my life on oxygen and medical monitors at the hospital and at home so my mother would read to me which
