Skype Reflection I will start by saying that our conversations with everyone over Skype has been my favorite thing I have had the pleasure to do since I have been in college. It was different, informative, intriguing, and easily the most interesting exchange I have ever had. I not only appreciate having been given the opportunity to be a part of this conversation, but feel fortunate to have taken part in learning about others and their way of life. After speaking with Chris Saunders and Panos and Stefania, I re-read Hofstede’s dimensions and felt I learned more and understood it better after speaking with them. I feel that I can read something repeatedly, but having a good example and seeing it first-hand is the best learning experience I can have. To have a good take away from the book with an even better example was the best way to learn this subject. When speaking to Chris Saunders from Wales and England, I first noticed that he seemed as nervous as we did. He was able to answer our questions with great content and was really funny. I felt that he had a great amount of individuality and held true to his own beliefs. I also feel that Chris showed that he fits into the masculinity dimension as he is successful as a writer and driven as a teacher. Since he has moved around so much, he shows that he personally has a low uncertainty avoidance, as he can take risks and is less resistant to change. An example of this is he was able to move to China, not knowing much about the culture or the language and take the changes as they came at him. When it came to talking to Chris, I think what surprised me the most was that there is a gap between 16 and 18 from what we would call high school to college. In the United States kids wouldn’t know what to do with themselves and I can’t imagine what kind of trouble they would get into. It also surprised me that he has lived in so many places. He has had the opportunity to learn so about so many cultures and meet so many people and that is incredible. My impressions of Chris were that he is very intelligent and funny. He has a great sense of what he wants in life and is able to accomplish those goals. Because of his individuality he is able to make his own choices and do
Chris Langan could be the most intelligent man in America. He is the oldest of four boys who all have different fathers. Chris never knew his father, but he did know his mother’s fourth husband who was Jack Langan. Jack Langan was a failed journalist who would get jobs and lose them, moved the family around a lot, and he would drink and disappear. He would also lock the boys out of the cabinets as well as bullwhip them so they would stay in line. Chris’s family was so poor that in Outliers, he says, “To this day I haven’t met anybody who was as poor when they were kids as our family was. We didn’t have a pair of matching socks.” (91) When he grew up, he went to live on a farm. He was never published, never became a professor, never became
Over the course of this semester, I have learned a lot about who I am. I have discovered things that I did not know about myself. Choosing Spelman College as an institute to education myself at was only the first step that I took. Overcoming the challenges that it has brought is the second step that I am yet taking. I am slowly, but surely transforming into a Free Thinking Woman.
Chris’s actions were very curtial to shaping his identity. Chris was always good at everything he did, he was always very confident and a good business. His parents remember a time when he grew vegetables in the garden, then went around the neighborhood and sold them. He made loads of money but didn’t seem to care he must have thought it was just a game. His sister remembers “He didn’t seem interested in the money so much
What Did You Expect To Learn When You Picked Up The Book? To What Extent – And How Effectively – Were Your Expectations Met?
Chris is a charismatic young man, but takes extensive measures to ensure he does not become too close with anyone. By going out into the wild without so much as a letter to his parents,
Chris was brave enough to escape an undesired life. He stated in a letter to Franz “So many people live within unhappy circumstances and yet will not take the initiative to change their situation because they are conditioned to a life of security, conformity, and conservatism, all of which may appear to give one peace of mind, but in reality nothing is more damaging to the adventurous spirit” (Krakauer 57). Chris took the initiative to change, he was
He believes mostly in himself and didn't go with the rest of society. Chris believed in individuality and that people should do as they please not what they are told to do by others. When Chris was in high school he was an overachiever and, “only once brought home a grade lower than B.” (Krakauer 109). The reason he received this grade was because of his individuality; Chris believed that the format that his teacher wanted his students to write in was stupid so he did it his way and received and F in that class because of his singularity (Krakauer 109). He values meanings.
The first trait that describes Chris is that he is hardworking. Many times in the story he is shown working very hard. “ During the four weeks in Carthage McCandless worked hard, doing dirty tedious jobs that nobody else wanted to tackle.” (Chapter 7 pg 62) This shows he’s very hardworking and doesn't complain when asked to do something. “ At the time he wrote these, he was holding down a part time job flipping quarter pounders at mcdonalds, on the train ride sharing his story showed his commitment to a job while hitchhiking.”(Chapter 4 pg 32) This shows he’s a hard worker by staying committed to a job while on his way to Alaska. These examples shows that he is a hard worker by helping out other and staying committed
For the reader to understand Chris’s journey you have to understand Chris and where he came from. Chris came from a family that kept a secret from him for most of his life that he was a bastard child and his father was very abusive to Chris’s mother. Since Chris has found out about that this his view on his parents has been tarnished
This week, the most difficult part of the reading assignment was section 1.7 Transformations. While the beginning was easy enough for me to follow I soon started to become bogged down with the number of types. I counted seven definitions in the chapter, all rather long, that included vertical shifts, horizontal shifts, reflections, vertical scalings, horizontal scalings and transformations. I read the entire section at least five times and the examples, especially towards the end of the section, a few times more before understanding it well enough to at-tempt the exercises. The examples were really good and had an artistic quality about them which I found interesting. Thinking back on the reading it was the tables themselves that con-fused me and which I needed to follow close, and with greater thought, to really understand. Even though there’re meant to further comprehension, which after careful following they do, it took me a few read overs. Sometimes getting lost in all the x, (x,f(x)), f(x), g(x) = f(2x), etc.. overwhelmed me and I had to move forward and come back to it later. I will give credit as the section was well explained well by the authors.
When Chris left for his journey, he abandoned the ordinary life of security and conformity that he believed was damaging to his adventurous spirt. A big example of security and conformity for Chris was college. In his senior year of high school, Chis had told his parents that he didn’t plan on going to college (Krakauer). He thought that
4. Chris McCandless is an extremely bright young man even though he considered himself to be a loner. A man like him would have a reason to befriend a lot of different people. “Oh yeah, him. Yeah, yeah, I remember him, sure.” Chris may have done such a
Overall, this book is a really deep thinking book, I haven't fully understand what the author is trying to teach us, but I love this process of stretching my
Chris’ beliefs is on both the God the natural environment evident in his love for the natural world. Chris has veneration for nature and believe that it is spiritually connected to God. Chris is not afraid to show his beliefs and stand up for them. He believes that relationships are not the key to happiness but rather existing in the natural world. He states that God had planned everything in his life and everything that’s happening now is all because of him. In the last part of Chris’ journey, he expresses how he felt about the journey which he conquered ““I HAVE HAD A HAPPY LIFE AND THANK THE LORD. GOODBYE AND MAY GOD BLESS ALL!” (BrainyQuote, 2016). This quote shows how he praises God for everything and everyone in his life. That quote shows huge respect to God for the opportunity he has been provided with. Chris talked about his spirituality all the time and this shows his inquiring
The film Sicko was indeed a very powerful and educational documentary about the United States Health Care System. There were numerous stories that resonated with me, but if I were to just choose one, it would have to be the story about the 9/11 rescuers who couldn’t afford to receive treatment for their illnesses, which were caused by their heroism on 9/11. When I heard this story, it just made me so upset that our healthcare system could not make an exception to treat the many heroes of 9/11. On the contrary, they were treated better and on top of that for free by another country. Every single day we are losing thousand and thousand of our people simply because they do not have the means to pay for their treatments. In fact, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention website states, that there are still over 28 million people in the United States who are uninsured (Cdc.gov, 2017). The American Journal of Public Health published a new study about the number of deaths found annually for those who are uninsured. The study found that nearly 45,000 annual deaths were associated with the lack of health insurance (Cecere, 2009). These numbers are upsurge and something needs to be done to change this.
