Do you think NASA should spend more money on studying asteroid? Many people want NASA to fund asteroid studies, but others think that it is just a waste of time and money. I think that we should fund asteroid studies for a number of reasons. First, we can find a ways to protect the earth. Second, we can have more discoveries. Finally, to find more resources. One of the reasons I think that NASA should fund asteroid studies to protect the earth. There are many reasons to protect the earth and one of them is from asteroids. When asteroids hit the earth it destroys that part of the earth and damages it. With studying the asteroid we can maybe find way to make them not crash into the earth. If we were to find a way to make them go a different or find a way to protect the earth from them the earth won’t get a lot of damage from the asteroids. With this we can also find many different discovery’s.
NASA can also help us make more discoveries. With theses studies, we can go deeper into space, going deeper into space can get us more discoveries. More discoveries like new planets, new galaxies and ect. We can also find ways to live in space. David (2012) talks about the team at the Collaborative Modeling for Parametric assessment of Space Systems (COMPASS), estimates that the cost to mine an asteroid would be about 2.6 billion dollars, which is a lot of money. However, Waugh (2012) says that there is a single asteroid in our solar system that is worth 95.8 trillion dollars, which is approximately 100,000 times more the amount of money than COMPASS estimated it would cost to mine an asteroid. That is an incredible profit-to-cost ratio. There is a problem though, that particular asteroid is all the way in the main asteroid belt way past Mars, and so it isn’t a likely target in the early stages of asteroid mining. But there are still several near Earth asteroids that are still very valuable. Waugh (2012) lists four near Earth asteroids that are all worth over 1 trillion dollars, which would still be an incredible payday. And these are just the asteroids that contain rare metals.
