NASCAR and the Temperance Movement Essay

When someone thinks of Ford Motor Company, one of the first things that comes to mind is the Mustang. Carroll Shelby revolutionized the world of cars, especially with his work on the Ford Mustangs. Carroll was not only a racecar driver, but he also created racecars and street legal vehicles. He is a member of the Automotive Hall of Fame and the International Motor Sports Hall of Fame, just to name a few, and in 1956 and ’57 was named Driver of the Year by Sports Illustrated. Shelby died March 10, 2012 at the age of 89, and in this speech I hope that I can convince you that he is more than worthy of the prominent place he holds in the history of performance vehicles.

America's changing social habits brought on the passage of the Eighteenth amendment in 1919, placing a nation-wide ban on intoxicating liquors. During the early 1900’s America was in its “Gilded Age”. The economy was booming and everyone seemed to be happy from the outside. But, there were many problems going on in the United States. In the factories where most people worked there were corrupt bosses, the people were overworked and there was child labor. The only salvation that these people had was to drink. The workers drank to calm down and feel no pain. But this destroyed families because they were almost constantly drunk. They would sometimes lose their only job because of the drinking. So, a lot of religious groups and many women started the temperance movement. There have been many people who have supported temperance in the past and it dates all the way back to when the Bible was written. Eventually the 18th Amendment was passed on January 26th 1919. This amendment was known as the “Noble Experiment”. This turned out to be a complete failure. This law was impossible to enforce because of the corrupt police and there was alcohol almost everywhere. In this paper I will go over alcohol use, attempts to fight alcohol abuse, and the rise in crime due to the money that could be made in corruption.

The beach was filled with racecar fans from across the globe. Fifteen records were set at the beach between 1905 and 1935. In 1936 the course began hosting racing events. Drivers raced a 1.5 to a 2-mile stretch of beach as a straightaway, and beachfront highway A1A as the other. But untrustworthy promoters would leave events with all the money before drivers were paid frequently victimizing drivers. So in 1947, he decided that racing would not grow until a formal sanctioning organization was formed, there were standardized rules, and there was a regular schedule and an organized championship. On December 14, 1947 France began to talk with other influential racers and promoters at the Streamline Hotel at Daytona Beach, Florida that concluded with the formation of NASCAR on February 21, 1948. With the help several other drivers of that time, its points system and rules were written on a bathroom napkin. There are forty-five drivers on the NASCAR Nextel Cup; every single one of them is white. There has never been a person of color to drive a racecar in the Winston Cup or the Nextel Cup. That's about to change, or some hope it does. NASCAR'S chief operating official George Pyne has teamed up with Magic Johnson and started a program to help encourage minorities to try to race. There is one black driver on the NASCAR truck series and a couple in smaller race series down south, but to this day none are on the Nextel Cup series.
