Narcissistic, Antisocial, And Dependent Personality Disorders

According to the article Modernity and Narcissistic Personality Disorder (2014) by Joel Paris, narcissistic personality disorder is a pathological amplification of narcissistic traits. This means that unlike a normal person, the traits in a narcissistic person that defines their personality are usually increased from a 1 to a 10. They are always the “self-absorbed” guy in the crowd.

Antisocial personality disorder is a disregard for others rights and violating theses rights. This disorder starts as a child to people who carry this disorder portray the characteristics of irritability, aggressiveness, lack of remorse, and irresponsibility. A psychopath falls under the umbrella of antisocial personality disorders. A psychopath is a person with a personality disorders which is inherited from their parents at birth. Flashes of these inherited factors show and happen in the child upbringing this includes torture animals at a young age, playing weird dark games as a kid, or ripping heads of toys. A perfect example of a Psychopath is Edmund Kemper. A man who showed his psychopath tendencies at a young age that grew into to him becoming a serial killer.

Although someone diagnosed with NPD may seem to have this overconfidence, those individuals have low self-esteems and negative criticism are not their cup of tea. What society tends to call those with NPD are cocky, arrogant, conceited, or “big-headed.” NPD individuals look down on others and try to belittle others. Individuals with NPD tend to take over in the presence of conversations, they have a sense of entitlement, and if those with NPD does not get their way or special treatment, they will become angry. Have you ever been around someone who seems arrogant? It may not be just arrogance, that individual may have a Narcissistic Personality Disorder or NPD. Narcissus, a Greek mythological character, fell in love with his reflection in the water and could never pull himself away, so he ended up dying right beside the water after a while (Marcovitz 1). Narcissism became known as being self-centered and was developed after this Greek myth (Marcovitz 1). This disorder affects less than 1% of the American population and it occurs more in men than women (Thomas 1). Some experts believe that events occurring in early childhood exert a powerful influence upon behavior later in life. Others indicate that people are genetically predisposed to personality disorders. Signs and symptoms of narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) are based on nine criteria from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual fifth edition. The criteria includes “a grandiose sense of self-importance, a preoccupation with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty, or ideal love, believes that he or she is “special and unique and can only be understood by, or should associate with , other special or high-status people”, requires excessive admiration, has a sense of entitlement, is interpersonally exploitative, lacks empathy, is often envious of others or believes that others are envious of him or her, shows arrogant, haughty behaviors or attitude” (Narcissistic personality disorder, n.d.). Antisocial personality disorder is a mental illness that is often associated with constant lying and abnormal behavior. Every patient is different and may have other symptoms than others. It is important to recognize some of the first signs and to seek medical help if needed. Narcissistic personality disorder is one of the many types of personality disorders that affect mental health, in which people desire to be seen and admired more than the average person. Those with narcissistic personality disorder believe they are more relevant or significant than others in society. They believe that due to their superiority in society, they do not need to take into consideration the feelings of others. However, like most people who have an immense amount sense of self importance and self-confidence, they have very little self-esteem and are sensitive to any criticism, regardless of how big or small it is. Let me tell you my story as a person who is clinically diagnosed with Dependent personality disorder. It was not until I reached my puberty that I noticed myself all the wonderful possibilities that could happen to me if I don’t avoid isolating myself with my own world. But first what is DPD? DPD negatively impacts every facet of the lives of those suffering from it. Depending on others, feeling helpless and wanting someone to do things for you is like a lifelong dilemma. Living in a People who suffer from DPD can be frightening and frustrating, I should know since I saw my family having a hard time around me. I rely on other people to meet my emotional and physical needs and it is a long run harmful not by just me but also for the people

It is quiet easy for us to attach onto those we love. Naturally, we are prone to want to share our lives with those around us and are likely to depend on others for a portion of our happiness. All of this is natural and makes us human. Who wouldn’t want to have someone they can lean on? But what happens when we become overly dependent on someone. When all of our decisions need to be fully backed, supported, and reassured by others? What happens when we literally can’t be alone and are helpless and fearful without someone by our sides? Well, these symptoms could show evidence of Dependent Personality Disorder (DPD).
