Parts of lives It was November 26, 2013 (I was in sixth grade) and my grandma (great grandma) was coming down with something. I thought it was the stomach flu, but we weren’t sure. One of the main things that popped into my mind was that Thanksgiving is only two days away. What about Thanksgiving? My grandma normally cooks Thanksgiving with the help from my mom, who the next morning was also sick. (And you are probably wondering, no I do not live with my grandma, me some of my siblings and cousins spend the night at her house around holidays) So now the two people that cook Thanksgiving dinner for about twenty people, are sick. I reminded my grandma of this, all she had to say was “ Why don’t you do it?” Fine grandma. I was not happy, I cooked but not something this …show more content…
I would have to try at least. So I woke up early Thursday morning and got to work. One of the first things that I needed to do was make the jello for green stuff, so it could set. Soon as that was finished I got the turkey prepared. It was a little difficult stuffing the turkey but I got past that. Next I started peeling and cutting the potatoes. My sister helped me with that using a potato peeler instead of a knife. After I cut the potatoes in half we cooked them and mashed the all up with butter, salt and pepper. Lastly was one of my favorite part, making kringla. I love making kringla because it’s kinda complicated to make. What made this time really special was that I was teaching my little sister. My sister and I were mixing ingredients when she asked “Malea, why do you love cooking so much?”. Why is my sister asking me this. “Well Catrina, why do you love singing?” “I like it because it makes me happy and reminds me of you and mom.” Did that just come from my nine year old sister’s mouth. Wow, didn’t see that coming. If there is one that my sister and I have in common it’s our love for singing.
“Your worst battle is between what you know and what you feel” -Unknown. When cultures collide, A person tends to have conflicts with others and also with themselves. In “Thanksgiving: A Personal History” By Jennifer New, She experiences internal conflict because she is confused on how she should celebrate her first thanksgiving as an adult, to either use old traditions she did as a child or to start a new thing as an adult.
This year Thanksgiving is on November 23,2017. Every year my family Thanksgiving is the best, to me at least. So we always have Thanksgiving at my Grandmas and Grandpas, but not this year we are having it at my house. Which I mean could be good and bad. Good is it is at my house so it’s cool and bad, the house has to be completely spotless or my mom will freak out. Normally what we do every year is we get my family together and have dinner, mess around, and watch football. This year my dad's brother is coming with his three daughters and his wife and my grandpa and grandma. I really can’t wait to see them all because I don't really see them that much as I would like to. When we have a family dinner like this we always have a lot of food for everyone.
I never thought the day would come where I’d have to admit to myself I had an addiction. The hardest part was to except the fact I was an addict of painkillers and admitting it to my family so that I could get the help and support needed to get clean. The road leading to my addiction started with the factors of my childhood, always trying to fit in and not being supported emotionally from my parents. Having a child at the age of sixteen was the second factor, which made me grow up faster than a normal child at my age would have had to. Living the life of an addict was a struggle everyday but, getting help was the hardest part of it all. I’ll live with this disease for the rest of my life because recovery is a
It was Halloween night and Elizabeth was at the pumpkin patch picking the perfect pumpkin for the pumpkin carving contest on her street. She saw her best friend, Lindsey, down the street so she ran down to meet her.
My siblings and I raced out the front door. Our grandma, Mimi, was finally here! The weather was just beginning to cool off. The trees outside rustled in the crisp breeze. I love Thanksgiving. Family together, cool weather, and the scent of pumpkin spice filling rooms.
You don't have to travel far to enjoy Thanksgiving. Take a break from the stove and let someone else do the cooking. You can choose to stay close to home or pick a weekend excursion with these 5 great Thanksgiving destinations. This is the time where towns and cities in Florida throw Thanksgiving festivities, with many kicking off the holiday season with parades.
This week, families across our state are unboxing their Thanksgiving décor, choosing table cloths, and deciding who is going to be responsible for what dish next Thursday. It’s that time of the year when we come together, forget our family drama for at least a week and get in the holiday spirit. Unfortunately, this holiday season comes with a different taste to many. Hundreds of Iowan families and I will share our Thanksgiving meal with uncertainty, anxiety and fear.
After all the yelling ,screaming, fighting, arguing we were finally finished cooking Thanksgiving dinner. While the whole family was getting washed up ,my grandma’s dog Fido entered the kitchen. He was the most spoiled little brat in the world. Every time we tried to get him in trouble he would run and hide under Grandma’s wheelchair. Last, year Fido ate the Thanksgiving turkey, resulting with us going to eat at some funky restaurant. With nothing better to do Fido started sniffing around the kitchen and sure enough he found the turkey. My dad and I kind of knew something like that was going to happen again so we made sure that the turkey was nice and safe in the oven. But, that sure didn’t stop Fido. He kept scratching, growling, and biting
Did you know that Pilgrims and the Indians made the day of Thanksgiving on November 29 1623? Well, if you did than that’s great. I wrote about Thanksgiving because it's the holiday that our family always cherishes. Sometimes I would watch cooking channels to learn how to cook Thanksgiving food for my family. It's really what we do every Thanksgiving.
Thanksgiving is a national holiday celebrated by the United States, Canada, and a few Caribbean islands. It started off as a day that gave thanks or blessings for the harvest of the crops. Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday of November, and the Second Monday of October in Canada. The first thanksgiving was celebrated by the pilgrims after the first harvest in the new world in October in 1621. Years later, Abraham Lincoln declared the fourth Thursday of November the national day of thanksgiving on 1863. Congress later made thanksgiving a national holiday in 1941.
The crisp, cool, and cinnamon air filled the morning of Thanksgiving in 1987. Although I was only two years and eleven months old, I remember the scratchy, fuzzy, purple- footed pajamas that I was wearing that morning. After I woke up, I "helped" my mom make her famous orange- cranberry relish, got dressed in my cream sweater dotted with cherries and my navy pleated skirt, topped off with my favorite cream fuzz- warn tights, and before I knew it we were out the door to my grandmother's house. After an early dinner with my grandparents, mom, and dad, my grandfather and dad left to catch the Dallas Cowboys Thanksgiving Day football game, leaving the rest of us to find entertainment of our own.
Thanksgiving is a time to celebrate our joys with friends and family. Unfortunately, if you are the person designated to cooking the holiday dinner, the joys can turn into complete and total fear. I'll never forget the first time I made Thanksgiving dinner for twenty family members and friends. I waited until the last minute to start and the dinner ended in a complete disaster. In the years following that failure, I have learned that preparing a Thanksgiving dinner is easy...if you plan ahead.
Every family has their own way of celebrating Thanksgiving and giving thanks. Today, this holiday is a time for reunions, watching and playing football, but most importantly, food. Not only is this a day for eating, but it also gives a pass on our diets and stuffing our faces. For millions of people all across America, this is a day where cooking, eating, and spending time with the important people in one’s life comes to play. This is the time of year where everyone is bundled up in cozy sweaters, the leaves are starting to change and fall, and when people tend to play Christmas music too early. With full stomachs, my entire family sits around the dining room table at my Aunts and Uncles house while we go around sharing what we are grateful
Thanksgiving is a day to give thanks to your life and everyone and everything in it. Thanksgiving is thought of in different ways and is celebrated in unlike ways. Families have divergent meals, places that they visit on Thanksgiving, and activities that they enjoy taking part in on Thanksgiving. Overall, no matter what traditions there are, what meals you have, or the activities enjoyed on Thanksgiving, Thanksgiving is truly a wonderful holiday.
October 10th, 2013 at 7:30pm. The day of my grandma death. The day that changed my life forever. The day I will never forget. My grandma was my everything, she was the lady who raised me since I was born. I never had a mother or father, the only person who cared for me was my grandma. The day my grandma died I was in my senior year of high school and I had just came home from cheerleading practice. That was an unusual day for me because when I woke up that morning my grandma wasn't up cooking breakfast like she usually does she was in her bed asleep still. I looked outside and the sun was just rising. I went in her room that morning before I left for school and said these exact words, "Good morning grandma if you’re not feeling well, I could stay home with you and take you to the doctor." In a raspy low voice my grandma replied, "Good morning sweetie I'm okay I was just feeling a little sick this morning but I'm better now. You better get to school now before you are late.” Okay, Grandma Love you, call me if you need me", I replied. On my way to school all I thought about was why my grandma sounded like that this morning and how she wasn't up doing her normal routine. I have never seen my grandma get sick before. She was always the one taking care of me making sure I was okay. But I just pushed the feeling over just thinking my grandma was okay and I was just overthinking. I should've stayed home that day. I should've noticed that my grandma really was sick.
