Finally Catching Up December 20, 2037 AD: A wave of exasperation washed over the room as Malum reconjured the idea of leaving yet again. Shrouded by darkness, in the main building overlooking the small domed town, he thought of how a few hundred people had just managed to maintain self-sufficiency for a little over a year. They had been rushed out of their old habitat, flown here and dropped off by emergency pilots that would fly off afterwards and never return. But as quickly as they had settled in, something had caught up to them. In the old days, with the colossal company that he had created, he could buy his own way out of this situation. Ancora smiled warmly and crouched to receive his question. “Mrs. Ancora, in the story you just told us, what’s a tree?” Memories threatened to flash before Mrs. Ancora. She gently set them aside to satisfy the curious boy’s question. “It’s a beautiful, green and brown pillar that used to appear from the ground, used to cover the earth.” “Well, after you fix the town, please get one for me!” She smiled and watched the little boy dash off to his friends, probably to play in the creek or climb the rocks by the bank. “It’s wonderful how you do it all, Alma,” Malum called from the door. “Teacher by day and a scientist by night.” Alma turned around, startled by a familiar voice. A personal visit from Malum during the day was usually very uncalled for. She always disliked his manner, his importance. Malum proceeded, “Alma, it has been a year since we have thrived under this little dome, but things are changing again. The levels are starting to creep upwards, and the hospitals are filling.” Mr. Malum straightened. “But I’m sure you understand this more than I do. When can your team finish the solutions? Time is not on our side.” “Mr. Malum, many things are not on our side. History itself is not on our side or there wouldn’t be this mess,” Alma busily shot back at her supervisor, then a sigh. “We are testing the solutions yet again, tomorrow.” “That’s ideal.
