Nat Turner: Deadly Slave Rebellion

Frederick Douglass was born as a slave in 1818. He was born in Maryland specifically in Baltimore. At the time of his birth, his last name was Bailey. Douglass began to receive an education as a child, which shows that he had more freedom than most slaves of the time. At the age of twenty Douglass fled Baltimore in pursuit of New York.

Nat Turner rebellion took place in Southampton County, Virginia, in 1831. Turner’s intention was to move through the countryside, household to household, killing as many whites as possible. He did not care whether they were a man or women, child or adult. Turner was quoted as saying that “indiscriminate slaughter was not their intention after they obtained a foothold, and was resorted to in the first instance to strike terror and alarm. Women and children would afterwards have been spared, and men too who ceased to resist.”

Nat Turner was born a slave in Richmond, Virginia in 1831. In this narrative Nate Turner recounts his version of events and later recorded during his revolt in Southampton County, Virginia in 1831. The revolt lasted two days but Nate was not captured until six weeks after. He was then tried for insurrection. Thomas Ruffin Gray was said to be the lawyer who questioned Nate as his trial. Gray questions his state of mind, why he led the revolt and whether he felt mistaken in doing so. Gray also documents Nate’s confession as he explains in detail his personal struggles and the visions he encountered prior going through with the revolt. He also describes the people, places and the slaves that assisted him. No one was spared men, women and children were murdered with hand tools.

He knew of stories that were told before he was alive and his grandmother and mother knew then that he was special and sent from God.

Frederick Douglass is from the autobiography Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave. Douglass was born in Tuckahoe, Maryland, in February 1818 as a slave. His mother was Harriet Bailey and his father was rumored to be Aaron Anthony, a white plantation manager. He learns how to read and write when at Master Hugh Auld’s plantation. Frederick Douglass learned how to read not knowing that slavery was bad, but he started to read newspapers and would see all the effects slavery has on everyone. Douglass quickly regretted learning how to read and write and would wish death upon himself, all he wanted was to be free.

     The Fires of Jubilee, is a well written recollection of the slave insurrection led by Nathaniel Turner. It portrays the events leading towards the civil war and the shattered myth of contented slaves in the South. The book is divided into four parts: This Infernal Spirit of Slavery, Go Sound the Jubilee, Judgment Day, and Legacy.

Nat Turner was an African American slave who was born in Southampton County, Virginia on October 2, 1800. He started working on southern plantations 1831. When he was younger, everyone thought of him as being very smart. They saw that he was smart when he was about 3 or 4 years old. While young Nat Turner was playing with some of his friends, his mother heard him tell the children about something that had happened to him when he was born. She later had asked him about what he told the children. She asked him details about the incident, and it confirmed that he knew about this past event. From that time on, other slaves believed that in addition to his unique view, his physical markings were a sign that he would be a prophet.
