I believe that I embody the National Honor Society pillars of character and leadership both inside and outside of school. I exhibit strong character in the way that I treat my friends, classmates, and acquaintances with respect and kindness. I try to be inclusive and welcoming to others, especially if they are in a situation that is uncomfortable for them. As someone who has attended my school for 11 years, I feel a responsibility to include students who are new to the school. I have a few friends who transferred schools in middle and high school. During their transitions, I have tried to include them in my friend group, invite them to school activities, and generally make them feel comfortable at their new school. In this way, I demonstrate
Having an older sibling is rough already, but having a brother that you have to worry about him breaking in and stealing valuables of your own, that's tough and the main character Gordie Jessup has to deal with the betrayal of his older brother, Chase Jessup everyday throughout Katherine Holubitskys’s novel “Tweaked”. Gordie’s efforts trying to fix his family are overwhelmed by Chase’s drug addiction and money debts he has with his dealers. There are many themes throughout the book.
National Honor Society is composed of four pillars: scholarship, service, leadership, and character. I believe that I have shown these four characteristic traits throughout my school years, however, I identify most with character. The character pillar is necessary for me to express the other traits of each pillar.
“Scouts Honor” by Avi is a realistic short fiction story about a nine-year-old-boy who is in scouting. In the beginning, the main character and his friends join scouts and they want to be tough and to earn the next rank in boy scouts, but they need to go camping. Soon they talk about going camping and the boys decide to go camping. When they left, they didn't have any experience camping, whatsoever. They go camping without an adult. In the end they try to cross the bridge, but they're scared and they push on. When they reach the other side they find a campsite and try to set up and they don't have enough food so they say that they weren't tough so they go home. Throughout the story the boys were not prepared.
“ His Expression remained the same- cynical, defiant, painful” (Gaines 84). Miss Emma did not think that Jefferson knew he was going to be put in the chair, which kind of furthers this whole idea that everyone has that’s he’s incompetent. Even his own aunt without realizing has degraded him. I think that maybe Jefferson can’t read or write but he’s a human who understands laws. At the beginning of the book I was feeding into the notion that he was mentally challenged, but I think now that he just grew up in the uneducated black stigma put on him by white people not letting black school have the same education. And so he knows he is going to die, he doesn’t fight he doesn’t resist he faces the unjust punishment with grace and is going o let
I’m currently seeking membership in Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Incorporated, for brotherhood and a friendship, with successful leaders who strive to compel an impact in their communities. Through all my interactions and meeting with members of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, the features that stood out to me the most that made me personally want to become a member were the friendship they held with each other, and those of similar characteristics. The fact that they were willing to help other men continue to grow and better themselves in any way they could. The men of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Incorporated that I have met, have pushed myself to become a better man and friend. These bonds have added a value to my life that I am forever grateful for.
I was pleased to have attended a lecture cosponsored by the Ethics Center, the Fresno State office of the president, the Fresno Bee and Valley PBS. The lecture began with Dr. Castro recognizing a few leaders on campus, including a past Fresno State president, Dr. John D. Welty and campus volunteer Mary Castro. Dr. Castro then mentioned a few things about Mr. Brooks stating that he is a columnist for the New York Times and an analyst for the PBS “News Hour” and NPR’s “All Things Considered.” Dr. Brooks also teaches at Yale University, one the finest university in the country. Dr. Castro continued by saying that he learned that Mr. Brooks office hours are from 9am to 1pm and how “cool” it sounded to him. I was surprised how many people attended the event. I was fortunate to find a seat. David Brooks mentioned how he has some remote roots in the Central Valley because his father grew in Chowchilla, CA but Mr. Brooks grew in New York.
If I were to be accepted into the National Junior Honor Society, which is one of the highest honors that can be awarded, I would consider myself to be a very lucky person. Throughout my life, I've always considered myself as someone with good character and values.I've always prided myself in always doing the right thing and helping others. In addition, I view myself as a leader, not a follower. Being a leader comes naturally to me. I'm a leader amongst my friends and siblings. They always look up to me when they have a problem or when they need advice. I have a good standard education with an A average which will help me achieve my goals in the future.
It is unbelievable that this year is my last year in Charlestown High School. As I look back at the past three years, there were several poignant moments when I was struggling with my classes and would have given up trying to achieve my goals. But as a diligent student, I chose to endure those moments. And that is how I become an outstanding student today. National Honor Society honors students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Being nominated to become a member of the National Honor Society is a highly prestigious honor, and I am very grateful to be a candidate.
¨The Joy Luck Club¨ by Amy Tan was an interesting novel. The book consisted of about eight characters, meaning eight different perspectives. Each of which, had a whole chapter or two dedicated to a short story in there life. They tell each other these life stories at a gathering they have every once in awhile to play mah jong. Throughout each story, or chapter, the mothers try to connect more with their daughters, and the daughters try to connect more with their mothers. It makes you wonder how well daughters know their mothers.
A new high school called Apex Friendship was just built in Apex, North Carolina. The new high school is only open to freshman and sophomores of the 2015-16 school year. In the booming town of Apex people come from all over to take advantage of its growing economy and its welcoming community and also the great reputation of the schools. Apex Friendship had many critiques and people with many expectations of what this school was to become. I was thinking this could either be very, very, bad or one of the best experiences of my life. Many people thought it would be a great school, and the students that would graduate from the school would be a great representation of the community from where they went to school at. Others, mainly the students
Sometimes in tragedy we find our lives purpose. Jimmy dean once said, “I can’t change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination.” This relates to the novel Ordinary People very well as Conrad and Calvin Jarret both tried seeking help and tried to fix their problems instead of pretending they didn’t exist. Conrad went to see a psychiatrist in recommendation of his father and his doctor, His father Calvin went and spoke to Conrad’s psychiatrist. Conrad also tried to communicate with his family more and have a more open relationship with his friends and family. Beth on the other hand did not try to resolve any issues with her family and instead ignored and kept her distance from Conrad and Calvin. All
The character was insecure about how she looked. Mainly because of the fact that the other girls on the playground said she didn’t eat enough food, she was called skinny bones and disliked the school for this reason she didnt have a lot of friends. The main reason she wanted to go to school was because of a boy named eugine who moved in next door over the summer. She didnt know him but she looked out of her window and staried it was almost like she was stalking him. She had went around the schools asking qeustions ab the boy to try in run into him. Eventually she speaked to him. You could tell he liked her. They were skinny bones and hick. To sum it all up the main characte was an outcast who didnt fit in, had insecurities,
The Red Badge of Courage is a psychological or war novel written by Stephen Crane. Set during the Civil War, it is a fictional portrayal of the Battle of Chancellorsville, which was fought in 1863. This novel focuses on the psychology of a single soldier. Three main characters are introduced within the first chapter, Henry, Jim, and Wilson.
The movie Ordinary People explores an All-American family’s response to dual tragedy. First the Jarretts experience the loss of son Buck in a boating accident, and then the suicide attempt of their other son Conrad. In response to these traumas, Beth Jarrett, a narcissistic mother who focuses on social appearances and propriety, refuses to acknowledge or express any emotion. Calvin Jarrett, an affluent tax attorney who feels overwhelmed and confused, tries to discern how to rebuild his sense of family; and Conrad Jarrett, who has just returned home after four months in a psychiatric unit, attempts to assimilate back into everyday life. As part of this assimilation, Conrad Jarrett reconnects with best friend Joe Lazenby. By spotlighting the friendship between Joe and Conrad within the context of communication concepts such as identity management, debilitative emotions, language as a barrier, non-verbal expressions, dialectical tensions and stages of a relationship one can examine how loss can exacerbate communication deficits resulting in the dissolution of the friendship.
