American history is full of powerful people that influence the history of the America and the actions taken to stand up for what the citizens believe in. Patrick Henry is one of America 's most influential people that took a stand for what he believed in when he presented the Speech to the Second Virginia Convention. Another influential person is Thomas Paine when he wrote the Crisis No.1. Although the Crisis was meant to be read, it was read aloud to unify the troops and boost morale. Henry and Paine both build their arguments and points using ethos, pathos, logos, personification, and strong imagery to appeal to their audiences, while using similar rhetorical devices to achieve their goal.
As you may have heard, Mr. Swift has made a very modest proposal about what to do with the situation of starvation among adults. Mr. Swift has proposed that after a year of a child's birth, they be eaten if the family wishes. I, being a mother of a baby, currently, could not approve of this proposal more. Me and my husband together, concur, this will allow us to not go hungry, but also fulfill our wish to have another baby. We've always wanted more kids, but we only desire a baby. We don't want them after they have grown older. We already have an older son. Now, with this proposal, we won't go hungry and we can stay full for months on end and all I must do is push out a baby. No big deal.
Have you ever thought why it’s good to help starving people in the world? No? Well, the first thing is.. Do you know how many people die of starvation each year? Well, at least 9 million people die of starvation each year worldwide. Also, at least 1 child dies of starvation each 10 seconds of your day. Wouldn't you want to save starving people in the world that need to be fed and cared?
Mindset to me is something that can always be changed depending on your attitude. I do not believe that mindset is something that is fixed, and that you are only as good as your genes allow. I think you can develop new skills or improve any current skills anytime in life as long as you put in the work. In the letter I wrote to a future student I talked about my first real test in college. It was in BIO 105 and I bombed it. When I saw my score the first thing I thought was that I wasn't cut out for college. I was used to not putting much effort in when I was in high school and still doing good. From a little help from my teacher I was able to change my work ethic when it comes to school work. From that point on I've done much better in school
Chapter I - Introduction 1.2 Problem statement and research questions “To what extent do motivational theories generalize across cultures, in explaining employees’ motivation?”
Carol S. Dweck, a psychologist, filmed one of her lectures in 2012 called “The Power of Believing.” In this video, she points out potential flaws in the education system. She points out that one of the reasons kids fail in school is mainly based on what mindset is put in a child’s mind during early education. Throughout the video, Dweck discussed two types of mindsets that people categorize into —fixed mindset and growth mindset.
This paper explores the “Spirit” of Motivational Interviewing (MI) as a class activity. Using a real life example (my daughter’s participation as a high school basketball athlete) as a case study to dissect, I attempted to apply what I’ve learned this week in order to help my daughter overcome a self-defeated attitude that has reduced her confidence and motivation to play basketball and also participate in her true passion, theater (drama) performances. My objective was to apply, through empathic and reflective communication, fundamental principles of motivational interviewing (MI) to help guide her toward autonomous motivation.
Beliefs are the intangible idea’s we form to help us keep going when we are in a rough part of our lives. They are the things we fall back on when we are forced with a tough decision. But most importantly, they are the parts of our identity that make us special. My biggest belief is in confidence. It makes you perform well, and it makes you able to stand up for yourself. But most of all, I believe in confidence because it is the most powerful and important mindset. I got my belief from playing soccer. Confidence has affected me more than anything else with soccer. When I thought I would play well, I played well. When I thought I would play poorly, I tightened up and was awful. This was very hard because my confidence would take a little hit then it would take a long time to recover because as my confidence went down, my skill went down, Then as my skill went down, my confidence went down even further and it was this horrible cycle that was almost impossible to escape from. This is why before I could control it, playing soccer just stopped being fun. If I couldn’t play well, why would I play?
My motivation to pursue a career in medicine stemmed from witnessing the disparities which occurred in my home country, and seeing how large differences with the provision of care can impact the health of a community. This motivation allowed me to serve populations which are in dire need in a multitude of ways, and I came to Pritzker, partially due to the fact of the commitment it has in regards to meeting the needs of a very underserved population; the south side of Chicago.
Motivation is the force that makes us do things, whether accomplishing personal goals or completing tasks at work. Most people are motivated as a result of their individual needs being satisfied, which gives them the inspiration to perform specific behaviors for which they receive rewards (Kinicki & Williams, 2011). These needs vary from person to person, as everybody has specific needs to be satisfied. When we consider factors that determine the motivation of employees, many of us think of a high salary. This answer is correct for the reason that some employees will be motivated by money, but mostly wrong for the reason that it does not satisfy other needs to a lasting degree (Bizhelp24, 2010). This supports the idea that human
Do seniors that are provided with health coach using motivational interviewing have fewer hospital encounters than seniors that do not receive the intervention?
A theory that supports motivation is the self determination theory. In the self determination theory people need to grow and gain fulfillment by a drive in them. Self Determination is the process of deciding how to act on ones environment. When one is trying to overcome a challenge or encountering a new experience a person wants to gain the knowledge to succeed over the new challenge. When self determination theory is in focus internal factors are at play; a person is primarily focused on the need to gain knowledge or independence. There are three factors that contribute to a student’s self determination and the needs are linked to the student’s
A global mindset is one that can manipulate groups of people from diverse backgrounds and cultures (Griffin, p. 7). Recently, I took a test to score my global mindset. There were ten questions that I had to respond to with a number from one to five. One being that I would strongly disagree and five being that I would strongly agree. My global mindset score was 43, which means that I am “open to meeting people from a variety of cultures” (Griffin, p.7). Although my global score was high, I learned that there are additional steps to improve my global mindset, such as learning another language, volunteering for international organizations, and developing specific behaviors.
