Pennsylvania is home to many native species, from wildflowers to owls and scarlet maples to redbellied turtles. Native species are defined as those that have lived in the Pennsylvania region since before the advent of European settlement. Unfortunately, nonnative species often invade an area, forcing out native plants and animals. With a knowledge of native plants, gardeners can plant these inherently adapted plants in the landscape, which in turn creates habitat for native species
The American Indian is a very unique and integral part of Amreican history, with a very rich and beautiful cultural background. There are over 558 federally recognized tribes in America right now,and another 126 who have applied for federal recognition. At the time of first contact with Europeans, the United states was fully occupied by Indian Nations and some 300 Indian languages existed, approximately 106 of which are still spoken. The diversity and hetrogeneity of the American Indian community cannot be overstated.
The geologic timeline and events that occurred in the Northeast would have had a major impact in the creation and movement of wildlife, topography, and biodiversity throughout the region. When looking at the Northeast through the lens of a bioregional food shed the largest impact on the biological makeup of the Northeast would have occurred between the early 1700’s through modern day. In that span of time, “…the Northeast would show forests which had occupied 90% of the landscape in 1700 occupied less than 30% in 1900.” Forest ecology is arguably one of the important factors when looking at the long-term history and evolution of one’s bioregion. When European settlers made their most significant landfall with the intent on permanent colonization in the Northeastern territory of the United States they would have been stepping on to ground that was rich in biodiversity. The Northeast was a region plentiful with “great forests of American beeches, maples, birches, eastern hemlocks, and spruces from New England to northern Pennsylvania, and oaks, hickories, American chestnuts, and pines from Maryland through Ohio.” In terms of wildlife and game that would have provided food for the European settlement they would have had access to the harvest of “white-tailed deer, beaver, wild turkey, passenger
Throughout history, the United States struggled with their differing cultural thoughts with the Native Americans. The whites had different ideas that they wanted to contribute to the country, and the Native Americans wanted to stay loyal to their cultural traditions. The early people of the United States gradually gained control of the country. This lead to Native Americans being methodically pushed off their land, deceived multiply through a broken treaty, and most of all, not being completely recognized as citizens by the rest of American society. Some of these Native American groups that had to experience these alterations were the Dakota and Lakota Sioux.
There were many notiable differnce between the the cultures of native american tiabes and their Europian counterparters. One particularly exceptional differnce is that Native American women seemed to enjoy a bit more respect, freedom, and even a little power. The politice of many native american tibes in a way centerned on women, although femail elders were not the leaders themsevels they frequently particpated in the politics of the tribe to some degree and even helped choose tribal leader.. Also spitituality and religious practices were a very important part of the native americans way of life and the women played a crucal role in number religous events. Furthermore A majorty of Native American societies would even have the childern
My experience is a bit different compared to other minority group experiences because I am a Caucasian American with Hispanic from Central America. People from a minority of Native American, African American, Muslim American, Chinese/Japanese American, and Jewish American would all have a complete unalike experience compared to me. Central Americans and Vietnamese Americans I feel it is rare for these two cultures to come together and that is what makes my experience so unique to the situation. A similarity and the only similarity I could find between Central Americans and Vietnamese Americans is they both immigrated to the United States. Central America immigration has increased significantly and added to the diversity in the United States.
New research on Native American Origins has reformed old concepts entirely. The question of where the Native Americans originated from has been asked and hypothesized for centuries. Previous thinking was that they were initially from the Americas or they migrated from Europe, but fresh, contradicting research has completely altered those thoughts. This contradicting research includes the discovery of a small boy from Siberia. Although many people used to think that the Native Americans originated in the Americas, it has been proven due to new discoveries and DNA testing that they have descended from people who came from Siberia.
WOW! Back than Native Americans had a lot of thing they had to do. Know lets learn about what they had to do!
Native Americans discovered that the corn plant can be used in many different ways not only as food. This incredible product has being useful around the world to many countries, in modern day there is about 4,000 uses for it. Corn is the reason many did not starve to dead, since it can be harvest and it can last all year round. Around 5000 years ago Natives started cultivating it.
As far as America’s existence dates, we as Americans have been taught to believe that when Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492, that although the land was preoccupied with Native Americans, that Europeans were indeed the first Americans. That has since then been refuted, now most modern day Americans have been taught to believe that the Native Americans were the indigenous American people. Although, it has been proven that Native Americans occupied the lands of the Americas before Christopher Columbus left Europe, Columbus is still praised for “discovering” America. New evidence now shows that long before the nomadic hunter gathers of northeast Asia traveled across the land bridge 12,000 years ago, and before Christopher Columbus
An atlatl is a thin wooden shaft with a hollowed-out cup at the end. By balancing the butt of the spear in the cup and then swinging the atlatl, Native American hunters and warriors could increase their leverage to hurl spears much faster and further than they could using their arms alone. Conquistadors and other early Europeans who fought with Native American tribes reported that spears propelled from atlatls were capable of penetrating chain mail armor. The word "atlatl" comes from the Aztec language, but this tool was used by most tribes throughout North America, Central America, and much of South
Native Americans believe Animism - the belief that the universe and the objects within it have souls and spirits. According to most Native American cultures, Power Animals are the embodies or conveys some sort of influence on a person with the traits and characteristics of the animal associated with them. It is believed that everything is alive and also possess strengths, power and wisdom. These animals are a person’s connection to life, character, and power. They are seen as guides who are found in dreams - Vision Quests. They walk through life with a person while teaching them, guiding them, and sometimes protecting them. The Power Animals include: the armadillo, the
Throughout history, countries went through imperialism, reconstruction and wars to pursuit their freedom. Native American’s embarked on new discoveries in America, which began conflicts with White Americans wanting control over what Native American had. Native Americans believed in freedom for the nation, but things began to change for them, when White American passed the Indians removal act. African American and Native American had similar experiences to pursuit their freedom. Both races were treated like they didn’t exist in the world; different types of acts and laws were created to prevented them from have equal rights. White Americans destroying ever race but themselves, to get what they wanted and these innocent people just wanted freedom and equal rights.
A native plant is a plant that evolves in a particular area for a long period of time. They also adapted to the weather change in that specific area, As well as worked alongside other plants to provide habitat for wildlife. A non native plant is a plant that originates from a particular place and was put some place else by accident. The dangers of having a non native plant in a place in which it did not originate is harmful because our wildlife eat the native plants and if a non native plant evolves in that area and the animals eat it there is no telling what harmful side effects that specific plant will have on that animal.
The biodiversity effects of non-native invasive species have been described as “immense, insidious and usually irreversible” (Veitch and Clout, 2002). There is significant evidence proving that invasive species can cause severe economic, environmental and ecological damage (Mack et al., 2000). A lot of time and research has been devoted to dividing the world into regions with distinctive habitats and species. Numerous pathways, mostly anthropogenic, are breaking down these realms and facilitating the ecological and biological invasion of non-native species.
This study explores the concept of whether native vegetation fosters the presence of native birds and/or non-native vegetation fosters the presence of non-native birds. My working hypothesis is: “there is no difference in the percentage of native and non-native birds between “gardens” having native or non-native vegetation.” Note: the word “garden” for the purposes of
