Is one’s life set in stone right from birth? Or does an individual gain certain qualities through experiences in life? Nature versus nurture has always been a controversial debate, and there are many different theories and explanations that have been provided around the world, and although many of these statements are true, no one has come to an official conclusion that explains this psychological phenomenon. There have been hundreds of studies conducted in order to explain this topic, and the findings can help develop an understanding that can eventually define the truth. By analyzing certain cognitive traits in individuals it is possible to learn whether these certain traits are predisposed or if the environment one grows up in influence the appearance of the traits. The way one learns, what one learns, and the capacity one has to learn: these are all things that could be understood upon further studies. By devoting time to these studies now it …show more content…
The ‘Nature’ side includes aspects like inhibition, desires, things one is born with, like it’s written in one’s DNA. Nurture on the other hand includes one’s surrounding. Parents, friends, tv shows, drugs, family life, all these are outside forces that would influence one’s abilities. The whole concept was coined by Francis Galton as he studied the relationship between the scientists in England and sought out the common, but hidden, factor that they all had in common that allowed them to discover. The difficulty in doing this however, was that no two people are the same making it hard to identify what could cause this scientific discovery. The solution to this problem, proposed by Galton, was to study twins in order to get as close as possible on a genetic level (Gottlieb 55). Since then, many studies have been done using twins, both fraternal and identical, in order to grasp a better understanding of this otherwise unknown
According to the article, What is Nature vs. Nurture?, nature is referred as “to all of the genes and hereditary factors that influence who we are—from our physical appearance to our personality characteristics” (Cherry, paragraph 1). For the nature side of the argument, mental disorders can be passed from generations. According to the article, Is Mental Illness Genetic? The Mental Disorders You’re Most Likely To Inherit, 40% of all sufferers, seems to identify at least one close family member with the same type of disorder. For example, my grandmother who was born in 1918, suffered over 40 years of severe depression to the point she had to take clonazepam pills to help with her sleeping and her depression. I was born in 1997, and I suffer
In the world of psychology, there has been a long occurring debate over Nature v. Nurture, and the influence it has in people. One of the debates in nature v. nurture is if criminality is caused by genes (nature) or if it’s by the person’s environment (nurture). In an attempt to receive information, psychologist have observed twins and adopted children to try and see if shared genes or environmental changes show an explanation to this phenomenon.
The nature vs Nurture debate allows us to see if behavioral tendencies, personality attributes and mental abilities are already a part of us before we are already born. Nature is influenced by genetic inheritance and biological factors. Nurture is the influence of external factors after conception, with experience and learning
The theory of Nature vs Nurture is the controversial notion that people are born a certain way, as opposed to the concept that people are a result of the environments they have been molded by. I am wholeheartedly a result of the environment I was raised up in, however, I am also proudly a deviation of the ambiance of the Western Bronx. As I step out of my building, the obnoxious slam of Domino pieces hitting tables and Bachata music blasting from cars infiltrates the aura of Marble Hill. This was a typical day in 228th Street’s tightknit community. As a Dominican, we are constantly making the best out of the difficult cards we are dealt. We, Dominicans, come here for a better life, yet our success stops at minimum-wage jobs. You are faced with a dilemma when you come from a place like I do:
Nature is the natural mental and physical way a person should act by the way their genes are formed, however nurture changes nature by changing one's environment to change the natural behavior one posses. Nurture is more dominant feature for people's psychological development due to the environment one's in. Nurture is dominant because the environment can change a person's gene features allowing their to cancel out the negative personality they naturally have in their genes. Nature is very deceptive because someone's destiny to be a crazy psychopath can become the opposite in the future, this is the result from environmental, someone raised positively will shape
The nature vs nurture debate is one that naturalists and empiricists love to have. The naturalists are on the nature side of the debate; they believe that a person's development is primarily influenced by their genetic traits. The empiricists, on the other hand, side with the nurture part of the debate; they believed that a person's development is mostly influenced by the environment they are raised in. Most modern psychologist, however, don’t take such radical approaches. They instead accept that a person’s development is influenced by a mixture of both nature and nurture, although there is still debate over which plays a larger role (McLeod). In my life, both nature and nurture have played key roles in my development as a person and who I
According to the dictionary the term "Nurture" means to feed and protect, and "Nature" means the particular combination of qualities belonging to a person. Although the brothers have one similarity that I would consider nurturistic, which is there willingness to help people thorough their occupation, I believe the rest of the other similarities that the brothers share fall along the lines of nature. For example, both brothers share the same shoe size which seems to be an inheritance from their parents and that is a natural similarity. Also, the brothers share similar interests such as smoking, reading, exercising, coffee, music, brand of clothing, and religion, which also falls into the category of natural characteristics.
In regards to being a “natural born killer”, behavior in a person can ultimately be broken down into it’s biological components. Humans have a “warrior gene” built inside of them and sometimes it’s an uncontrollable urge that just releases with little to know warning. For example, on a drastically smaller scale, you get punched in the face and your immediate reaction is to strike back. That feeling, that action is the “warrior gene” inside of you. That’s part of your DNA to adapt and survive. Some people are born with extremely bad tempers. Where do you think that came from? It’s passed down from generation to generation. Men are more common to strike back, have a poor attitude or make a big deal out of something
Throughout growing up, an individual is told they can do and become anything they want to as long as they put their mind to it. That is great for someone to understand, but despite knowing this philosophical viewpoint, people quickly learn that some individuals are better than others at certain activities. I’m sure throughout school you realized that some students comprehended skills quicker than others.
Does nature or nurturing shape a person? Nature means your genetics which determine your physical traits like hair color and I.Q. Nurturing is how your life shapes you, like where you live, or where you travel. I think that nurturing plays a bigger part in shaping us because our experiences and family help to develop us into the person we become when we are fully grown up.
Nature versus Nurture has been a prolonged debate since the beginning of modern science. The argument is whether our characteristics, personality and behavior are affected by the environment or heredity. The nature theory is that our genes and hereditary plays a factor on how we look to the different traits we have. On the other hand, the nurture theory is that the environment and our personal experiences has an impact on who we are. Therefore, both factors play a major role in determining why some people commit serious crimes or to study if an adopted child has more in common with their biological family or adopted family.
The Nature vs. Nurture debate is one of the oldest arguments in the history of psychology. Since the start of the debate psychologists argued that you were either a product of nature or nurture, not both. Nature enthusiasts suggested that you are a product of your genes, while nurture enthusiasts suggested that you are a product of your environment. What if I told you, you actually could be a product of both? Newer research and experiments suggest that many human traits and behaviors actually result from both genetic and environmental factors. Your genes help to provide the potential for a trait, but in order for the potential of said trait to be realized, your environment has to influence
I think that nature and nurture both affect a person's life, but I think nurture has more to do with our lives than nature does. When I was little, i was at a parade and the people in a tracter threw candy I didn't get any so I started crying and felt bad. It connects to me now I am an ESFP a Feeler. I think that nature has a lot to do with our lives but nurture has more to do with it, and that nurture controls what you think and act.
Over the years, scientists have struggled to prove whether nature or nurture has the key role in the determination of key characteristics and traits that humans have expressed. One characteristic’s development that has been extremely difficult to base solely off of genetic of environmental influence is a human’s intelligence. The question of whether a person’s intelligence comes from the generations before them or does it simply develop from life experiences, lessons, and schooling. The tumultuous amounts of research and ever-changing and advancing theories all seem to agree that both nature and nurture have a partial role in the development of intelligence.
- The argument between whether the determining factor of a person character is based primarly on nature or nurture is an argument that can go pretty much either way depending on the experience of the person who is asked. While many would say that nature is more of the dominate factor because it deals with heredity, an equally strong point could be made about nurture because it deals with ones social environment. Personally I believe that both play major roles in the development of a person character but the role of nurture slightly outweighs nature when it comes to this area. I say this because even if a person is bound to develop certain negative traits, if they are put in a structured environment where the development of those traits can
