Nauert attributes friends’ social media to risky or bad teenage behavior. Teenagers are influenced to drink and to smoke by seeing other friends’ party pictures on social media. Social media is a strong weapon for teenagers to start doing risky things. Nauert uses research to support his claim about where risky or bad teenage behavior comes from. The study was found in Journal of Adolescent Health and was done by the University of Southern California. They surveyed sophomores in El Monte county, California. Based on the surveys, teenagers whom friends do not go to parties are most affected to drinking and smoking. 34 percent of them known a friend who has talked about partying online and 20 percent admitted, their friends put up pictures of
However, when the teens were shown a post of their friends, or people they know with drugs and alcohol; there was no effect to their pleasure center of the brain. Meaning that teens will most likely like / share photos of drugs and alcohol that their friend reshare without a second thought. The reporter in this article got her information from top scientist from UCLA Brain Mapping Center. In “Teens: This is How Social Affects Your Brain”, the researchers never tested adults only adolescent, to see the effect of social media on their brain. This article makes fine research material for a more scientific description of the teen brain, when using social media.
In the article “ Teenage Social Media Butterflies May Not Be Such A Bad Idea “ by Melissa Healy, social media isn’t as bad as you think. According to Amori Yee Mikami teenages are using social media to communicate with their friends and not strangers . Some adolescents count their parents as their friends on social networking sites. According to a L.A. psychology professor kaveri Subrahmanyam says children on and offline have the same relationship on social networking sites and in reality . Another thing Subrahmanyam said was that teens use social media in wayś that don't harm their well being. Some teens that struggle with depression or other type of behavior are most likely to be bully or harass, and also take online risks such as sexting
What do you think when you hear the word “teenager”? Most people think of teenagers as pugnacious and restless human beings. Their rebellious and rambunctious behavior usually leads people to believe this. Teens tend to participate in jeopardous activities such as dangerous driving, binge-drinking, or fighting that could land them in serious trouble, the ER or the police station. Although engaging in these exercises is strongly frowned upon, some studies show that most of these actions cannot be controlled. Adolescents are drawn to risky acts due to specific messengers in the brain, peer pressure and their odd methods of apprehending the outcomes of a situation.
One reason social media can be harmful to teenagers is that it can distant you away from people around you. The text states, “ It may draw some teenagers away from having relations with themselves and people around them” This implies that social media can take over the lives of many people. Children need to have a good relationship with the people around them and not be glued to their cell phone all the time. They even need to have a relationship with themselves. There are other things in the world that are better and more entertaining than being on facebook.
Social media has been a topic of debate for years. Some people are strongly against any use of it while others like the instant connection it provides. A major concern over social media is the lasting effects it has on teenagers. Social media can affect teenagers through many ways including things like their self-esteem. Cyberbullying is a raging topic of discussion centered around teens social media use. It can also effect their people skills and create a lack of community involvement. Some parents think that watching what their children do on social media is an invasion of privacy but is your concern for their privacy greater than your concern for their safety? Social media poses a great danger to today’s children. It can affect many aspects of their lives.
Social media has been known to help students develop important knowledge and social skills. “At first glance this may seem like a waste of time; however it also helps students to develop important knowledge and social skills, and be active citizens who create and share content.” (Chen 3). The more time teens spend on social media the more they become aware of their own social side and how to interact with others, especially their peers. “Some types of social media has beneficial effects, like helping adolescents establish some sense of identity and build networking skills” (Riley Davis). Too much time being spent on social media can also exploit teens to some harsh realities that they’ve probably never experienced in their lives before.
In Melissa Healy’s article, “Teenage Social Media Butterflies May Not Be Such a Bad Idea,” she debates whether or not the psychologically healthiest kids are children that spend a lot of time on social networking sites. First, I agree with that argument because I don’t think children use social media in any way that can be harmful to them because teenagers will not always use social media to communicate with friends but also to research for their homework. Then, I support the idea that “Adolescents are largely using social networking sites to keep in touch with friends they already know, not to converse with strangers…” because I feel like I don’t put myself in danger whilst using social media in any way. Finally, I can also agree with “…forming
In today’s society there are many matters that there are to be concerned about such as peer pressure. Kids are being pressured into doing things that could affect their lives till death. The most common thing that people are pressured into doing is drugs and alcohol. Today it is a normal thing that teens under 21 are drinking, whether it is at a party or someone over the age 21 has given it to them. An article on
Through the power of social media and technology, people have the ability to become more aware of and involved in different organizations, or see the respectable deeds that others are doing. This “power” may inspire people to make a change in themselves, but potentially in the world. But, this power can be so overwhelming that people may make poor decisions. For example, it is a well-known fact that many underage teenagers drink alcohol regularly. So, say if an underage teenager who does not typically drink, sees their peers drinking, they could potentially feel pressured or tempted to join in and drink, which is a poor decision. Again, going back to the idea that social media and technology allow for people to look into other’s lives, some people may become insecure about who they are or look like, and feel the need to change themselves to fit this idea of what society likes to see, which is ultimately hurting the person’s
In contrast to all these, the internet (social media) has wrecked the mind of teenagers by inflicting them with negatives thoughts and ideas about how the world whirls around them. Then again, the essence of giving out their personal information to strangers they do not even know nothing about.
Teenage drug abuse and social media Even though the majority of parents may not appreciate the impact that social media platforms can have on their children's willingness to consume alcohol, use tobacco and use drugs, the majority of teens are influenced by social networking websites.
A 2011 study from the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University found that 70% of the teens surveyed said they used social media, and that group was three times as likely to have used alcohol. “It is somewhat like a domino effect.” - Britni Cretaz. An example of that is a person is sharing their drug use on social media and influences one of your friends, and your friend does the same and influences you. Thats why alot of teens are affected by social media nowadays.
They recruited adolescents to participate in their study. The participants posted a photo on their Instagram page, believing that their peers would see it and like it. It was then tested to see how many number of likes were under the photo and if that particular number affected behavioral responses in adolescence. Researchers hypothesized that the participants would like photos that were more popular and had the most likes rather than the photo that was less popular and had less likes. The influence of peers is highly important during the adolescence stage. It means adolescence knows how to interact, communicate, build relationships, and behave appropriately with others. Peer influence and peer pressure can have negative influences. Negative pressure can lead to dangerous and threatening behaviors such as drug use and reckless driving. Young people tend to upload daily activities/routines and risky behaviors online. Those particular actions may have an effect on other peers and encourage them to engage in risky and harmful behaviors. Included in the study, there were photos uploaded showing risky behaviors, trying to see if those photos aided in the influenced responses in adolescence.
Social interaction has always been a fundamental factor to the survival of the human race. Socializing makes it possible for people to fully function as human beings because through socialization individuals learn their roles in life, their culture's language, and form their personality (Sociology). In today’s society, media plays a powerful role in people’s lives. It provides people the ability to form broad connections through countless social media sites and applications (apps) such as Facebook, Instagram, Skype, YouTube, and Twitter. Media has been growing rapidly throughout the world and has become part of our generation. As users increase, the debate over whether the use of media gives a negative, or a positive, influence on people’s lives will increase. Currently, teens live most of their lives on media networks. They share news, pictures, and secrets through a single tap on the “post” button. Media has a positive impact on our generation, yet at the same time, it can lead to negative influences that affect our society. I believe that the excessive use of media can negatively affect adolescents because it can lead to addiction and cyber bullying.
Have you heard of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snap Chat, or Myspace? It is probably safe to say most of us have heard of one of these, if not all of these social networking sites (SNS). If by chance, you are unfamiliar with SNS, they are online based social exchange websites. Anyone can get a profile on anyone of the sites mentioned above with a valid email address, unless under the age of thirteen. (Phillips, 2007) SNS give an individual an area to create a profile, that allows them to place their picture, input personal data, update their statuses, post pictures, videos, and comment on others posts. Facebook for instance allows instant messaging, voice calling, and video calling from inside the Facebook profiles, to other Facebook users. People accept and deny requests from each other ultimately creating a circle of enmeshed groups of people with alike interests, locations, hobbies, beliefs, or “friends”. Adolescents being impressionable and impulsive in their behaviors already, having so much access to all kinds of different social taboos, risky behaviors, and unsupervised and unmonitored interactions, could be a detrimental thing to these youth. Has Facebook influenced adolescent high-risk behaviors?
