Now they can't pay for any food or a ride home. Last, they go to work at a rock quarry where Nathan meets his demise. “You must learn to be careful-did you not hear the whistle blowing and the people yelling at you?” (64) Now they need to adjust to their new work even in bad weather. Even though they can't get a ride home Rukmani and Nathan still try to make enough money by working to their full extent never quitting and due to that, Rukmani finally makes it home where her troubles soon end.
Overall, it is clear that challenges can always be overcome by staying determined and never giving up. Rukmani and Nathan overcome many challenges by staying determined, some of these challenges are very rough and hard to pass such as; a long drought, industrialization, renovation, and the failure to

Throughout the past couple of months my fellow peers and I have been studying the topic ‘challenge’ and how it affects our lives and people around us. In our everyday lives we are confronting challenges, some are as small as walking up a few steps, and some are larger and more challenging that could be life or death circumstances.
challenges but think of the challenges Mr. Frank and Mr. Kraler had to do to get prepared. They had to
Despite the many attempts to eliminate poverty, the problem has never been solved. Even though these efforts have helped lower the numbers of people becoming poverty-stricken every year it the numbers still seems to progress. In the novel Behind the Beautiful Forevers Author, Katherine Boo brings a different perspective. Boo takes the reader into the Annawadi slum of Mumbai, India. The Slum was presented a jumbled, filthy and impoverished area hidden from the view of westerners and better-off Indian citizens beyond the concrete wall. Her Novel Serves as a snapshot into the lives of the impoverished people of Annawadi and a great comparison to poverty lines in America. In this essay, I will compare the way that Katherine Boo has presented the miserable lives of those in the slums and the poverty-stricken in America today.
First,in ways, people overcome obstacles is keeping a positive attitude since when you have a positive attitude you are harder to discourage. An example of positive attitude while facing adversity would be in the text “A work in progress” where Aimee Mullin faces her adversity with humor like when she broke her wooden leg and while all the other people in that room were freaking out all she could think about was that her parents were going to kill her.I chose this example because out of all the stories we read in class about facing adversity Aimee Mullin struck me as the most positive about her obstacle. It’s important because it shows my point that with a positive attitude you don’t get discouraged as easily and like Aimee Mullin you can achieve whatever you wish no matter your adversity.Another example from “A work in progress” that shows positive attitude would be when Aimee Mullin got her new legs and was stating all the good qualities about her legs instead of being like oh I don’t this about them or
Helen Chasin, wrote a poem in 1968 entitled, The Word Plum. After reading this poem a few times I noticed a few things about it. First, I noticed that Chasin was actually writing about the word, plum. I found the fact that she was talking about a word to be very strange. Again after rereading it I noticed the poem made many inferences to the fruit, plum. When I was reading and rereading the poem I noticed the words in the poem correspond to the letters in the word “plum” and many describing the word and the fruit a plum. “Pout and push” (pp 443) both start with P the first letter of plum. When you say plum you almost have to push out the P and when you taste a sour plum it can make you pout. Chasin continues the poem with, “luxury of self-
An analogy has been drawn about how she was in the past and how is she now. She was a carefree person, demanding love in her life, wanting to take care of her children and become a house wife and now she works as a schoolteacher, has become a responsible person concerned about her husband and child, struggling for her son’s life, bearing tantrums of her sister-in-law and living in a small house in a small city. On the other hand, Komal, sister-in-law of Anjali is a character shown who seems to be frustrated from her life from the time she has lost her husband. The book has depicted another face of an Indian woman, who lives her entire life following the customs that the society has decided for a widow. Anjali tried to make her first marriage successful by taking care of small things like making her husband, his favorite cardamom chai and best of meals while Prakash’s second wife Indu was never concerned about any of his likings and gave priority to her own personal
Katherine Boo’s Behind the Beautiful Forevers is a non-fiction book. Boo got to know the people there during the course of three years in India, and she wrote about the daily stresses and problems. The book describes a long story of life, death, and hope. It takes place near an international airport in a Mumbai undercity that is separated from the normal world by the “beautiful forever” wall. Boo describes how every resident of Annawadi in Mumbai is involved in the strife of day-to-day living and how each has plans to improve their situation. Annawadi is a society that subsists on the leftovers and castoffs from the affluent, and a society where corruption runs rampant. Boo has shown us how our lives and the people’s lives in Mumbai are different.
The plot in the short story “Hindus” demonstrates how a certain sequence of events can help people better understand themselves. Leela meets many different and unique people on her journey throughout
Overcoming adversity is a challenge that everyone has to face. Some good examples of people who overcame adversity are the Boston Marathon runners, John J. Pinder, and Malala Yousafzai. They all had challenges to face, but they never gave up. Overcoming adversity is going to be hard, but the ending will be worthwhile, that’s why patience is needed to overcome adversity. Life is like a roller coaster, full of ups, downs, inside outs, sometimes you may start out slow, but as you go along, you speed up, in adversity, it may take some time to think about how to overcome it, but you’ get the hang of it and will eventually overcome it. Malala was faced with a lot of problems and challenges, but she pulled through and overcame adversity.
Everyone experiences adversity. Challenges that everyday people experience can potentially shape, improve, or destroy one's sense of self and personality. Through all these hardships and seemingly impenetrable obstacles, the most pertinent component of one's ability to overcome can only be shown in actions taken despite the odds. People have one of two options; to let those obstacles overwhelm them and keep them from pursuing all that they were destined to accomplish, or to march forward, fight harder and push past the seemingly impossible circumstances to become greater than they ever expected to be, but until they take the step that enables them to be successful -- they are stranded. All of our actions, mistakes, successes, and behaviors shape our person and what we can or cannot become, but what will always matter is our individual decisions and actions not those of the people around us because at the end of the day, we are the ones who have to deal with ourselves.
In the novel, Nectar in a Sieve, the author, Kamala Markandaya creates various themes. One theme from the book is that tensions can be caused by modernization and industrial progress. This theme is highly prevalent throughout the story and broadens the reader’s outlook on modernization. Markandaya writes of a primitive village that is going through a severe change. Her ability to form a plethora of characters with different opinions, yet to share one main culture, helps highlight the tensions in the village.
This short story is from a Mauritian extract written by ‘Shawkat M. Toorawa’. In this story, we experience the theme of survival with the help of Rafik, his fatger and Zubayr.
The book, Nectar in a Sieve by Kamala Markandaya, was published in 1954, approximately seven years after India gained independence from British colonial rule. Thus, it can be concluded that the book is either took place during the Raj Period or shortly after gaining independence. Rukmani, from a family of four daughters, was married off to a poor tenant farmer named Nathan at the mere age of twelve. The first year of their marriage brought rich profusion and wealth. The harvests were abundant, and Rukmani gave birth to a beautiful girl, Ira. As Rukmani and Nathan’s lives progressed, however, they faced adversity and challenges. First and foremost, Rukmani was unable to conceive a son. Apprehensively and secretly, Rukmani solicited fertility treatments from Kenny, an American doctor who spoke the Indian language. Ira was seven when Rukmani bore her first son, Arjun. As the years progressed, Rukmani birthed four more boys: Thambi, Murugan, Raja, and Selvam. As the family continued to face daily challenges of starvation, a tannery is built near Rukmani’s mud house. After careful consideration and the dissuasion of their parents, Arjun and Thambi sought to find jobs in the tannery to earn money and support their families amidst the starvation. However, both Arjun and Thambi were fired for protesting their measly wages. Luckily, they both found well-paying jobs in Ceylon on a tea plantation and never returned home again. Ira, when reaching fourteen years of age,
From what I have read so far in the book, “The God of small Things,” there are many major themes that have captivated my attention. Those include “The Love Laws,” how the relationship between Chacko and Margaret got to the point of love, the blame and guilt between the characters, and of course “Communism.” Based on four these themes many things have gone wrong for the lives of the characters, especially with, “Blame and Guiltiness.”
