Cell phones are affecting the lives of people in a negative way. People have begun to rely solely on the technology that has been created rather than picking up a book or finding answers the old-fashioned way. A major issue that has occurred because of cell phones is the lack of social skills in most nearly all individuals. Cell phones have greatly shaped society and destroyed face to face social skills. People pick up their phones and send a text rather than going to speak to a person. “According to an article in the Huffington Post, children do not know how to handle face-to-face conflict because so much of their interactions occur through some sort of technology…. Cell phones are now preventing these social skills from being taught because children are too caught up in technology than the real world.”(Hyman) When growing up, most children are taught how to make friends, but now children are growing up with the access to technology which has a great impact in shaping the social skills of children. “Young adults also use text messaging as their primary method of contacting friends – over 80 percent report texting as their preferred method.”(Voegeli). Young adults and even older adults have developed an addiction to their cell phone. Cell phones do make it easier to contact people, but they make social skills in individuals dissipate. The most noticeable effect of technology usage is a shortage of memory; not as in computer memory, but human memory. With Google constantly at people’s fingertips, it’s easy to look up information rather than memorize it. Carr cites in his article that tech users "cease to exercise their memory and become forgetful," instead of relying on the internet to quickly search for facts without having to commit them to memory (7). He also states that humans are losing the capacity to ‘deep read’ and cannot unearth meaning in articles the way that they used to in the time of the printing press and less evolved pieces of technology (3). In Gigi and Small’s article, they mention that the prefrontal cortex, or the area in the brain that handles short-term memory, could be altered by technology usage (4). However, Kristina Konidaris, a student who uses multiple technological devices daily, states that the technology does not have a profound impact on her memory. Instead, she states that her memory is more affected by her interest in the subject and her feelings rather than the technology used, although sometimes it may be easier to remember things she has handwritten rather than typed. In today’s world, as technology is advancing around us, some of the major effects that can be seen are medical technology advances, ease of communication with the growing technology, and the negative effect on our body.

Have you ever consider how harmful technology is? Some of us believe that using technology is necessary while others think using technology is time consuming. However, studies show that 59% of boys and girls are addicted to technology. In 1951, the science fiction short story “The Pedestrian” written by Ray Bradbury, and the twenty seventeen 20/20 episode “Digital Addiction” both show how harmful technology is. Therefore, using technology is incredibly hurtful. Furthermore, constant destruction, Isolation, and lack of privacy are three negative outcomes of using technology.

The Social Impact of technology has changed the way we live our daily lives. It has recreated the way we communicate using Social Media, the devices we use on a daily basis, and the barriers we are breaking to help the elderly and people with disabilities. With all of these great accomplishments in technology we still find ourselves overlooking how this new technology affects the people around us. Is one of our greatest accomplishment going to bring us a promising future with great discoveries or a future filled of a negative impact on our society.

When was the last time one stopped to think how much time he/she spends on the media, or the last time that one had a face to face conversation? According to the Pew Research Center, the use of smartphones in particular has increased an astounding 33% from 2011 to 2015 (Anderson). The media is affecting the general population, but most of all the development of children in more ways than adults, of which some may cause lifelong problems for the children. The use of the media and other electronics has drastically increased over the past 4 years, but it is said to increase even more in the coming years. This is leading harmful effects, specifically on children and adolescents, causing bad behaviors and attitudes, decreased intelligence, and worst of all health problems/concerns.

Technology has greatly impacted today’s society. Through technology, we can have the entire world at our finger tips; but is this new and evolving way of life negatively impacting society? Traditional family foundations are rotting away due to modern use of technology. Children, instead of playing outside, riding bikes, or using their imagination, are increasingly depending on technology; and in the future, technology will have damaging effects.

These smartphones and devices we give to kids can create mental health issues. Julie Evens, a child psychotherapist for 25 years, isn’t anti-technology yet she is against the negative side effects it has on our young saying “It is battering our children's brains.” Which makes kids miss out on “kindness, acceptance, conversation, face-to-face, nature, nurture” (qtd. In Stanford). Moreover, Farnum, a 49-year-old father, came to the realization that the smartphones he gave his kids were changing them stating “There were some real problems,” and then told The Washington post “If you tell them to watch the screen time, all of a sudden the fangs come out.” (qtd. In Mettler). Once you give a kid one of these devices they can change into a completely different person and worse of all, these changes are happening when they are still developing. Some developmental traits can prove useful, although there are many scary traits that overcome the them that may prove more serious than just handing over something for their entertainment. Mobile devices affect teens in a negative way. Numerous teens struggle academically because of their cell phone usage. Most teens don’t know the misfortune that they can get into if they don’t know how to use the internet right. As a result, they fall into poor habits, feeling compelled to check their social media even when it’s unnecessary. In addition to bad habits, “Smartphones present a huge distraction in classrooms, where teachers are forced to compete for students’ attention” (Katz). This can lead to using wrong websites and getting in contact with strangers. When young adults are constantly on their cellular devices, they experience negative effects of social media and other websites that they use as a distraction.

It also includes the use of materials, tools, techniques and sources of power to make life and work easier or more pleasant and productive.
