There are both sides to everything and the possibility of technology bringing society to its knees has sparked a lot of controversies. Some people argue that technologies like the internet, smartphones, and computers distract students and it prevents them from achieving academic excellence. It is true that the use of these technologies is an issue, but I believe people should embrace and advocate for the use and advancement of technology in schools.Technologies not only creates a better environment for students in terms of their academics, but it also helps control and reduce the risk of plagiarism in school. At the end of the day, the positive effect of technology in education outweighs the negative effect by providing students the opportunity to obtain education from different sources and methods to better their understanding.
Technology has become an integral part of our daily lives to a point where having access to it is practically a must for everyone, but even more so for students of all ages and stages in the educational system. In the research journal, “ Internet Use and Academic Success in University students”, the authors Torres- Diaz et al, firmly believe that as a result of the internet, students were exposed to a rich data source that led to the creation of a better atmosphere in which learning and ideas increased. Torres et al supported their numerous claims with studies like (Leung & Lee,2012), whereby the researchers indicated that “ Studies show that students who search out information online get better marks because they have access to more data sources and are thus better informed on the subject” ( pg. 63). A survey conducted in 2015 by McGraw- Hill Education (2015), it was reported that 81% of students use mobile devices to study, 77% of students argued that adaptive technologies like smartphones and the internet have helped them improve grades. I have no doubt that smartphones can be used as a preparation tool for students to familiarize themselves with class topics without using other preparation like carrying around a laptop or textbook. I often use my smartphone to view, grades, lectures, e-text, and videos ahead of classes. The availability to use smartphones to view documents on
Though there are some positive effects, the adverse impact of technology on education has been extraordinary. The technology community has worked hard to bring useful technology into our classrooms, all with good intentions to broaden our knowledge. With these good intentions also came about unwanted side effects such as distraction and disruption in the classroom. I can clearly remember many of my teachers yelling at us to put our cell phones, iPods, and iTouch phones away especially during lecture and exams. The yelling was not without just cause, students cheated with their devices along with updating their Facebook pages during class too.
Modern technology has penetrated every aspect of our lives and made great impacts on our daily activities, especially in the area of education. The continuous infusion of technology in education has become an unchangeable tendency. Given the increased use of technology in education, much research has been done on the value of technology in education. However, none of the studies have answered all of the questions that are essential to determining whether continuous infusion of new technologies in education can improve the quality of education. Since a clear answer to this question is vital to help educational organizations to make decisions on how much
Around the world, one of the most controversial topics is whether or not schools depend too much on technology. Sure, every school has some type of internet form of learning but that doesn’t mean it’s too much. People have their own reasoning for believing that schools use too much technology instead of reading directly out of textbooks. I also have my reason to believe that it is not too much technology being used for educational purposes. There are different effects of technology that are both good and bad. It has helped education and also had a negative effect on education. So, let’s take a look at the facts that I have researched, and some of the different opinions people have.
(Pernia, 2008) describes ICT as a technology used for communication that can help to create, manage and shared information. The researcher explain that the broad definition of ICT includes, computers, the internet, telephone, television, radio and audio-visual tools also further that any device and application that has been used as access, manage, integrate, evaluate, create and communicate information and knowledge is also an ICT. According to (ETS, 2002), the International Literacy Panel regards ICT as combining Information Technology (IT) and telecommunications. The panel further explains that IT is the electronic display, processing and storage of information, but not necessarily the transmission of the information. (Onunga and Shah, 2005)
Remember that scary, grotesque, evil monster we were all scared of when we were younger? Well, it's alive, we just can't see it, and it's called technology. As we all know, technology is changing and evolving every day; but it's almost as if the technology is taking over the minds of our future generation. Schools are incorporating technology into learning more and more all the time. Every month there is a new phone, tablet, television, laptop and even thousands of websites. These devices can come in handy and can be helpful, but they almost are consuming everyone's mind and minimizing critical thinking. Many of technology users are children or young adults. Although the use of technology in education can have some positive results, it has more negative effects that are affecting students.
The pro's outweighs the con's in this argument. While technology could distract students, it can just as easily hold their attention. As discussed when moving from a technological environment to a non technological one an adjustment period is necessary. Using technology in schools has a positive effect on the environment. Schools who use more technology in turn use less paper. Students with disabilities are no longer left behind with assistive technology. When these programs are in use students with disabilities have a better possibility to succeed. Students are being prepared for the future by becoming familiar with technology. Last but not least technology makes learning fun. Technology is always going to be around why shouldn't schools take advantage of all the
To begin, technology can be used as a productive tool, but sometimes at school, this tool can become a huge distraction. In fact, "A study published in the Journal of Media Education this week reported that student spends a fifth of their time in class doing things on their devices that have nothing to do with their school work" (Schaffhauser). Technology has the power to distract students when learning and eventually makes students forget everything they did learn. When teachers hand students technology, school work is not always what you see on the screen. Due to this distraction, scores on tests have been going down, "The paper published by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology
One topic that will continue to bring contribution to education is technology inside the classroom. Elementary school all the way up to college and even further up to Doctorates programs will continue to face the rapid changes in society. To stay on-top and updated with the world, there is no option but to convert with society to technology. One side will continue to say technology is beneficial to everyone that has something to do with education. Now, it is not uncommon to still have others say, “technology has its pros, but the good doesn’t not out weigh the bad in this situation”. To look at each side and say they are right or wrong is undoubtable but, the education system must find the balance and the between of paper mixed with some technology.
Incorporation of technology into everyday lives nudged society into a position where our world is focused on electronics. The educational system values the benefits of this convenient improvement, but some studies deny that fact. Societal benefits seem to outweigh the negative effects of technology; despite what is presented in media, these benefits could also hurt the child through a withdrawal of socialization and individual thought. Many scientists support their viewpoint through observations, yet remain biased on the conclusions they release to the public. This obtrusive inspection on the impact of technology changes the judgement that each person has. Although people who read these studies have a strong opinion, they do not particularly change their beliefs on the topic. Interpretation of the effects of technology on education remains diversified across the country, and those who use it stand firmly with their opinion.
In an ever changing society with rapid technology growth, technology could be viewed in many ways. For many, they strongly believe that technology has many educated purposes as students have unlimited access to anything ever created, said or done. Whereas others believe that the amount of technology that is being given to the students aren't benefiting them at all, in fact, technology is creating more problems, which could jeopardize the students future. Before schools should consider becoming an all technology atmosphere, schools need to acknowledge the negative aspects that technology can bring to the table, this would entail the lack of imagination, short attention span and the inability to develop a set of skills due to the widespread
Technology today is further along and more complex than it has ever been. Technology has found its way in our everyday lives one way or another. From our cars becoming self-driving, to technology being widely used in the school system. However some people, believe that technology should be separated from the schools, saying it causes more harm than help. I, on the other hand, completely disagree. That could not be any further from the truth in all reality. Technology gives us much easier ways to learn, a streamlined way to communicate with teachers, and can provide more creative freedom than without it.
In today’s world, there is no uncertainty that technology has grown to be a part of our daily life. Although everyone’s opinion is different, some may say it is positively impacting education while others say its negatively impacting education. According to the articles “Texting and Writing” by Michaela Cullington and “Wikipedia: Write First, Ask Questions Later” by Dennis Baron, appear to believe that technology is negatively affecting education. Technology can negatively impact one’s education by the ability to use proper grammar, inhibiting writing skills, and just being plain out lazy.
These past few years technology has grown rapidly in fact we now have technology in our hands that can search, send, and receive information along with numerous other functions; don't forget the laptop that can do everything a computer can do just smaller and portable. Technology has been great for our education because now a student can search for anything he or she has a question on and find an answer rather quickly unlike our older generation that went to a library and find a book to search for answers. Past technology in education was great but now it has reached a time where students are being given too much freedom with phones and laptops in class and our educational system is not seeing the increase in knowledge that was expected. A research project was done where two widely reported studies one from Winona state and one from Cornell university “students using laptops in class remember lectures poorly and miss understand course material. Their ability to focus even on course related Internet searches is weaker than that of students who are not digitally connected during class” (Nettleton 2). Now people can see how technology has its drawbacks and we need to know if it is beneficial or not to have technology in the classroom and should it continue to be a part of the educational system.
Should Technology be a useful source in the classroom? In today’s classroom the school provides smart boards, computers, and also students have phones which bring distraction to others and the teachers. However classrooms back in the day teachers were only allowed chalk boards, books, paper, and pencils to teach their students the education they needed. Technology also should not be used in the classroom because it creates distraction and encourages laziness, it also makes cheating easier, disconnects people from each other, replaces teachers, and it makes it easier to access other’s work.
Using technology in the classroom gives students a much greater advantage in whatever job or lifestyle they decide to pursue after their academic careers. Technology has become so much apart of our daily lives, and routines that we cannot expect the younger generation to be able to keep up unless they are equipped with the tools that are necessary. Some people might argue that inundating kids with too much technology can be harmful. Another argument against technology is that it is putting kids out of touch with reality, and causes damage to the social aspect of child education. However, using technology in the classroom helps children learn, and grow in a way that follows the direction the world is taking. Technology should be used more in classrooms, as it gives students an expanded view of the world beyond the four walls of their classroom, we need more and better technology in our schools to ensure the success of the students today.
