Media coverage of news events can be disseminated to the general public in any number of different ways and media biases often “reflects certain organizational and/or professional preferences or values” (Bennett 2011, 173). In fact, Lundman (2003) points out “that journalists assess the newsworthiness of homicides occurrences using the relative frequency of particular types of murders and how well specific murder occurrences mesh with stereotypical race and gender typifications (357).” In addition, Johnson (2012) felt that the real job of media was to “create a message that…grabs public attention (62).” In other words, can the media grab the public’s attention and hold it?

The media in American society has a major influential impact on the minds and beliefs of millions of people. Whether through the news, television shows, or film, the media acts as a huge database for knowledge and instruction. It is both an auditory and visual database that can press images and ideas into people's minds. Even if the individual has no prior exposure or knowledge to something, the media can project into people's minds and leave a lasting impression. Though obviously people are aware of what they are listening to or watching, thoughts and assumptions can drift into their minds without even realizing it. “One may be making a virtuous decision when choosing the lesser of two evils, but one will still find himself stuck with an evil choice.” Many Americans today find themselves in this predicament when concerning the two possible choices for President of the United States. On one hand you have Hillary Clinton who the Federal Bureau of Investigations labeled “careless” and “grossly negligent” in the handling of America's top secret information. To the contrary you have Donald Trump who has said “he would like to ban all muslims”. Both of these examples merely scratch the surface on the quality of these two candidates. Correspondingly many Americans agree that neither Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton are fit to be President of the United States.

With the system under which we live, political and moral thought is limited by political identity in that individual’s ideas must conform entirely to their thought of their political party otherwise they would be discredited. Non-conformist thought is seen as immoral because to lean too far onto the side of the opposing political party is extremely frowned upon as the other side is seen as immoral. As these attacks get more and more frequent and so does the amount of media that covers them. When the media reports about these events they can spread untrue, misleading or misunderstood information. This kind of spread can get cause stereotypes among the American people.

Let’s view the positivity of the media from a functionalist perspective.
