Negro Baseball Leagues Baseball is known as one of America's favorite pastimes. A fun filled family outing would include a picnic and a trip to see their favorite Major League Baseball team play. The faces of the children would light up when they caught a foul ball. This pastime of "baseball" was one of segregation and a naïve sense of enjoyment, for the "baseball" that they knew was a game of only Caucasian Americans. Little did they know, some of the most talented players were African-American. These black baseball players had to play in a separate league. He had intimidation skills, and he burned with a dark fire. He wanted passionately to win. He bore the burden of a pioneer and the weight made his more strong. If one can be certain of anything in baseball, it is that we shall not look upon his like again" (Kahn, 1972). Jackie was provided with emotional support and purpose for bearing all hardships he went through from his wife and three kids. He became National rookie of the year with 12 homeruns, 29 stolen bases, and a .297 batting average. In 1949 he became the National Leagues most valuable player and won the batting title with an average of .342. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1962. Jackie Robinson was permanently engraved into our minds as the man who broke the barrier. In 1997, the world celebrated the 50th anniversary of Robinson breaking the barrier. His number, 42, was retired in all of the Major League Ballparks (Tygril, 1983). In 1960, Major league baseball was fully integrated. It was such to the point where the Negro league had become completely obsolete. Years after the integration, many different African-American payers, as well as former Negro league players had been elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Baseball is one of America's favorite pastimes. No longer segregated, Major League Baseball today is one of the most popular sports to exist.
