There are two different mind sets to reacting to difficulties in life, the Victim way and the Creator way. According to David Mirman’s article on Victim and Creators: a Victim is someone who when faced with a negative experience tries to find someone or something else to shift the blame on, that mentality is counterproductive, because it does not help someone reach their goals in life. He describes a Creator as someone who when faced with a negative situation tries to learn from and overcome the situation, adopting this mentality helps people tremendously in reaching their goals in life (Mirman). Instead of admitting that he should have been paying more attention to what she said, he just blamed her for not explaining what she wanted. He is a Victim because life controls him. When we talk, he will often complain about his car breaking down or failing a class in college but he won’t accept responsibility and he does little to prevent it from happening again. My friend Andrew has a Creator personality for various reasons. The first reason is that, he always allows himself a chance to overcome any obstacle. For example: he started taking college classes early when he was sixteen. He started early so that if he fails a class, he will have an extra semester to retake it. The second reason is that, if he does make a mistake: he always accepts the blame for his actions, and he fights to get around any obstacle in his life. An example of this is: He received a C on his first test in Pre-Calculus Two. Instead of blaming the teacher for his poor score, like many of his classmates; he accepted responsibility. Now, he will always study with fellow classmates the week before every test. He has always been like this. Even as a child. I remember once, when we were young; he came over to my house and asked if he could borrow my bike, when he came back, he told me that he had wrecked it trying to avoid other children on the street.
