Everyone faces challenges; however, not everyone faced the two pronged sword that the New Negro Women faced during the Harlem Renaissance. Not only did they have to find a way to define New Negro Woman to the New Negroes in the facially masculine Harlem Renaissance, but they also had to find a way to participate and connect with her new womanhood throughout discriminatory New Woman movement. Many New Negro women wanted to be able to have a private and public part of life - have a family and be able to work. However, they both had to face the trials of gender inequality and the tribulations of racial discrimination in the workplace. This question of “allegiance to race or gender” became a common theme in the works of the New Negro women.
It is strange that two of the most prominent artists of the Harlem Renaissance could ever disagree as much as or be as different as Zora Neale Hurston and Richard Wright. Despite the fact that they are the same color and lived during the same time period, they do not have much else in common. On the one hand is Hurston, a female writer who indulges in black art and culture and creates subtle messages throughout her most famous novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God. In Elise Johnson McDougald’s essay “The Task of Negro Womanhood,” she elaborates on the difficulties of being a black, working woman in society. In order to understand the struggles of a black woman in America, “one must have in mind not any one Negro woman, but rather a colorful pageant of individuals, each differently endowed” (McDougald, 103). This is because to be able to understand the problems they face as individuals one must think of black women as a collective unit. The early 1900s was a time marked with tragedy in America. Started and ended with the Great Depression in between, it was not America 's finest moment. Prohibition was in place, the Klu Klux Klan was still marching, and the Lost Generation was leaving for Paris. But despite the troubling times, people still found beauty and meaning in the world around them. They still created art and celebrated life. The Harlem Renaissance was an artistic and literary movement that developed a new black cultural identity through artistic expression. It fused African traditions with slave history and American culture, and revealed to the world what life was like as a black person in America.
The women previously talked about on include, unfortunately, white women due to the fact that racial issues were still prominent post Civil War to the roaring 20s. Racial tension between blacks (now freed) and whites intensified as time continued after the Civil War. Yet, much like women, racial equality had its gains and its setbacks, especially in the South. Many of the gains for African Americans came in forms such as free blacks whom were equal to white men, political participation, and artistic and social expression during the Harlem Renaissance. However, the setbacks were much larger defeat, such as segregation and the overall treatment of blacks in the States.
In 1860’s, women were not allowed to join the war, although they could become nurses instead. Women in the North mostly belonged to the Sanitary Commission. It was an organization that traveled to battle to get supplies to soldiers. In my opinion, the sanitary commission was not a good experience since ailments (diseases) could spread in the camps easily. In 1863, Lincoln passed the Emancipation Proclamation, which stated Confederates had to let African Americans out or slavery. Later on, they were acquiesced (accepted) to join the North’s army. Although, if they were captured by the South, they would be killed, but this did not stop their perseverance. I believe this law passed by Lincoln was an excellent idea because African Americans are the same as us, we are all the same human creatures, just a different color; and equality for them should be accepted no matter what. There were spies like Elizabeth Van Lew that would tell others (the North) about what the Confederates were scheduling. She pretended to suffer from a dainty mental illness in order to muster (gather) information. I think that was very sneeky to do, but kids at school do the same concept: act like spies to ahold of rumors and etc. In the book, “Civil War” it states, “Sadly, two of their four sons died before Lincoln’s assassination in 1865…” This shows that Lincoln wasn’t having a peaceful life like people meant have thought, he was also afflicted from family losses too. General Lee sent a note to General Grant while surrounded by Union troops. They met at a house near Hamlet, and Grant approved the surrender of the Confederate Army.
The early 1900s was a very challenging time for Negroes especially young women who developed issues in regards to their identities. Their concerns stemmed from their skin colors. Either they were fair skinned due mixed heritage or just dark skinned. Young African American women experienced issues with racial identity which caused them to be in a constant struggle that prohibits them from loving themselves and the skin they are in. The purpose of this paper is to examine those issues in the context of selected creative literature. The Harlem Renaissance was a cultural movement in the 1920s that led to the evolution of African-American culture, expression through art, music, and literary works, and the establishment of African roots in America. Zora Neale Hurston contributed to the Harlem Renaissance with her original and enticing stories. However, Hurston’s works are notorious (specifically How it Feels to Be Colored Me and Their Eyes Were Watching God) because they illustrate the author’s view of black women and demonstrate the differences between their views and from earlier literary works.
The Harlem Renaissance represents the rebirth and flowering of African-American culture. Although the Harlem Renaissance was concentrated in the Harlem district of New York City, its legacy reverberated throughout the United States and even abroad, to regions with large numbers of former slaves or blacks needing to construct ethnic identities amid a dominant white culture. The primary means of cultural expression during the Harlem Renaissance were literature and poetry, although visual art, drama, and music also played a role in the development of the new, urban African-American identity. Urbanization and population migration prompted large numbers of blacks to move away from the Jim Crow south, where slavery had only transformed into institutionalized racism and political disenfranchisement. The urban enclave of Harlem enabled blacks from different parts of the south to coalescence, share experiences, and most importantly, share ideas, visions, and dreams. Therefore, the Harlem Renaissance had a huge impact in framing African-American politics, social life, and public institutions.
I always found the 1920’s a very interesting decade as it went from a lively moment to a depressing and struggling one within a split second. Therefore, I believe that I learned all of the concepts pretty well. For instance, I learned about the Harlem Renaissance, the cause and effect of The Dust Bowl, and the lasting political argument of the New Deal in the United States. Minrose Gwin‘s book, Black and White Women of the Old South, argues that history has problems with objectiveness. Her book brings to life interesting interpretations on the view of the women of the old south and chattel slavery in historical American fiction and autobiography. Gwin’s main arguments discussed how the white women of the south in no way wanted to display any kind of compassion for a fellow woman of African descent.
