New York City Similarities

Even though the North and the South origins were both from Europe, their customs and living habits were different. The North and the South began to notice these differences as they broke away from Britain in the Revolutionary War. The North and South emerged into two different regions, due to their various differences. Some people are like Colson Whitehead who “was born here and thus ruined for anywhere else” (“City Limits” 3). Others may have “moved here a couple years ago for a job. Maybe [they] came here for school” (“City Limits” 3). Different reasons have brought these people together. They are grouped as New Yorkers, but many times, living in New York is their only bond. The Northern states are made up of many cities, so the culture is determined by the life in that region. Most Northerners were religious, believed in Christianity, and thought that God was against slavery. Although there were many schools as well as churches, girls usually never went to secondary school and only a few boys went. As for the South, the people of that area shared similar beliefs. The culture of the South was determined by their own families, plantation life, and by the owners of the upper class plantations. Since farmers spent a lot of time taking care of their own crops, many of them had no education. While many adults were not able to go to school, many children were able to get an education. There were so many differences between the cultures of the North and South, but both regions had a bit of separation between the wealthy and the poor. Most of the upper classes in the North were well educated since they were able to go to college. The rich Southerners owned a lot of land where lower classes worked for them. Differences in the North and South The Southerners thought they were doing everything right until the Northers disagreed with their ways. As the North was expanding rapidly and more immigrants were coming. The South was not changing much at all. After Abraham Lincoln was elected the South felt powerless especially in the political party.

I can’t even begin to explain the massive cultural differences between modern-day north and south. Most people assume only climate and slang are the major difference in the two, however they could not be more wrong. Especially between Toronto and Wichita Falls, Texas. It may sound obvious but there are geographical differences. For one, in the north we have more clear and fast rivers, and we almost always have a bay. While in the south, the soil is agriculturally more fertile, so in essence we see more farms and large areas of land. There have always been numerous reasons for people to move. Whether it be a push factor, like war or lack of religious freedom, or a pull factor, like job opportunities, people have some reason to move. New York City, like many of the cities in growing America in the late 1800s, had been a huge draw for masses of immigrants wanting to leave their countries due to major push factors like war and famine (Dial). As cities grow, they always need people to fill jobs to help it grow, and with so many people immigrating the structure of the city itself was changing. More factories were established as New York City and New York in general was and is a major city for imports and exports due to its location on the east coast of the United States. With more factories, came more jobs that needed to be filled, and the immigrants coming into New York, mainly from European countries, were a perfect fit as they had limited English and needed any job they could find, even if it meant dealing with low wages and shoddy working conditions. Large companies like the Triangle Shirtwaist Company were no stranger to understanding that industry played a major role in the economic structure of New York City (Triangle Fire: One Hundred Years After). These companies tended to take advantage of the immigrant workers they employed by not paying them very well, and reducing cost to the owners by having minimal regulation and upkeep of safety protocol. New York City is known as the largest city in America, full of excitement and action. This passionate embrace in the middle of Times Square was not completely out of the normal. In the year of 1945 a sailor arriving home from World War II is warmly welcomed back home by his nurse. Home-coming war-photos often leave people feeling warm and sentimental. Looking at this emotional home-coming photo, one will most likely assume that the two are young, deeply in love and missed each other very much, but there is far more to this photo than what can be assumed by most people.

As I walk up the stairs from New York Penn Station, all I remember thinking was “oh my god”. New York City is very heavily populated and it, without a doubt, makes for an interesting experience. Here I am; just a girl from Newton, Kansas, standing there in the heart of New York City.
