Nin: A Narrative Fiction

Imagine waking up on an island, that doesn't exist. A place where there is only one way in, and one way out. With teenagers and animals from all around the world appearing here, and dangers around every corner. An island with rules, and romance. A island called Nil that Charley, Thad, and everyone who is brought here have to escape from, before there time runs out. This is the book Nil by Lynne Matson, and the story of Charley and Thad.

The din was frightful. Billie was crying as usual. Dave and Sol-leks, dripping with blood from a score of wounds, were fighting bravely side by side. Joe was snapping like a demon. Once, his teeth closed on the foreleg of a husky, and he crunched down through the bone. On Saint Julian’s evening, before the Crakers inadvertently release the dangerous Painballers back into the world, Toby prepares soup and feeds the group. Toby, in a third-person narration voice, simultaneously describes the scene distantly and intimately. There is a stark disparity between the fairytale-like quality of the scene, and its grim reality (and devastating conclusion). Toby reflects on how she acted as a (fairy) godmother of sorts, the one who brings together a band of odd companions but transforms them through nobility and kindness to share a meal around a roaring hearth. The idyllic imagery is of course disrupted by the reality of a catatonic, raped and traumatized Amanda, a dying hallucinating Jimmy, and the villainous Painballers.

The author uses the narrative style of writing in this text. Narrative non-fiction is character-driven storytelling. Steve Lillebuen firmly believed that the victim, Johnny Altinger, deserved to be a major focus in the text. The author focused on how he lived including his tragic death. Narrative requires more research than traditional reportage, for writers cannot simply tell what they learn and know; rather, they must show it.

The dinner party had just ended and Plum, Green, Mustard and I were walking to our cars when we saw something laying on the ground lifeless. When we approached the lifeless thing I saw that it was my friend Mr. Boddy. Mr. Boddy is a fit man with brown hair, blue eyes, and always wore a suite that the maid Mrs. Blanche White always ironed the night before. When we got close enough to the body we saw that there was a note and a candlestick the note stated "I am at your dinner party and if you don’t find me by 5:30 I will kill you all and make your deaths painful enjoy trying to find me."

She was sitting in one chair and her feet were propped up on another. Alannah admired her black boots, and made a mental note to ask her where she had gotten them.
