Nine Months, Nine Months Have Come And Gone And So Much

Nine months, nine months have come and gone and so much has happened. It seems as though I have only blinked since the first day I got out of my car in the blistering Phoenix heat and walked into Christ’s Church of the Valley’s Leadership Institute’s class room on my first day. It has been nine months of incredible growth; of encouragements and challenges, of tears and laughter, victory and defeats. But most of all this has been nine months of witnessing God work in His kingdom. All my life I have been lucky enough to have a front row seat to God’s ministry, and yet somehow here I have felt as though I have been a participant more than ever before. And not just the “big C” church, but the local body of believers gathered together to worship… this is our purpose, and Jesus – our leader. I believe Hybels says it perfectly, “There is nothing like the local church when it’s working right. Its beauty is indescribable. Its power is breathtaking. It comforts the grieving and heals the broken in the context of community. It builds bridges to seekers and offers truth to the confused. It provides resources for those in need and opens its arms to the forgotten, the downtrodden, the disillusioned. It breaks the chains of addictions, frees the oppressed, and offers belonging to the marginalized. Whatever the capacity for human suffering, the church has a greater capacity for healing and wholeness” (Chapter 1). This idea, however, prompts a further question: if Jesus is the Leader-head, what does it look like me to follow first before leading? Hybels answers this question for us, “Behind the scenes of every prevailing ministry is/are a courageous, servant- oriented leader(s)” (Chaper 1). I think that this idea has been so crucial during my time here. I want to be a leader courageous enough to take the gifts I have been entrusted with seriously, to develop them and utilize them to reach the lost for Jesus Christ.
