The work of art that I chose is a still from director Noah Baumbach from the film “While We’re Young” starring actor Ben Stiller. My initial reaction to this was how much different this film looks from modern-day filmmaking. This film was only released not too long ago, in 2015, but it was shot on 35mm film. Most new release films are shot on a digital format. The main reason for this is because of how expensive it is to shoot a movie on traditional film. To put this into perspective, a 1,000’ roll of film is approximately $860.00, and a 1,000’ roll of film will only shoot 11 minutes. It’s easy to tell due to the background light that it is daytime, possibly the morning. It looks like there is a combination of warm and cool colors. The natural light coming in from the windows of the vehicle shown in the foreground gives the image a warm, brighter color. The colors in the background are cooler and gives a lighter feel to the image. In terms of mass, this is a three-dimensional image. You can tell because of what is shown in the background, middle ground, and foreground. The background of this image would be the cars passing behind the vehicle in the image, the middle ground would be the people in the vehicle, and the foreground shows us the GoPro camera and the dashboard. I believe this image would be considered to be closed form because it is self contained, as in the main scene takes place in the car alone and does not take up the outside space. When it comes to the element of space, although it appears as if the actions in this photo interacts with real space, what is taking place inside of the car is real, but everything surrounding the car is an illusion. Movies almost never actually film a real car on a real road, everything behind the car in the picture is an illusion and is created using a green screen effect. Not everyone is a criminal just because they have a criminal past. People can change through time and experience. Individuals are capable to recognize this through pieces of writing which shows the characters from the beginning through the end. In We Were Here written by Matt de La Pena in 2009, there were three main characters which are Miguel, Mong, and Rondell. Miguel committed a horrible crime and got sent to a group home for a year and was obligated to write in his journal, so the judge can understand his way of his thinking. Miguel meets Rondell and Mong at the group home. Then Mong decides to come up with a plan to escape the group home, run off to Mexico to be free with Miguel and Rondell. The three boys did not know each other that well, they were basically strangers who eventually became best friends threw their journey of escaping to Mexico. In We Were Here shows a major theme which a theme is the moral of the story. Within that journey ,Matt de La Pena, the author of We Were Here shows symbolism which created the theme even though you might have a bad past everyone has the chance to change.
Homer Hickam thoroughly details much of his childhood and early to late adolescents in his novel “We Are Not Afraid.” Outlined in 4 parts where Hickam details the positive aspects of surviving and making a living working the coal mines. Aside from basic two dimensional art, I have always been fascinated with the unique stories told through film. The way that a picture is painted through film is something that one cannot find in just any art form. Film is unique and fascinating, so I sought to find a way to unite the two worlds of film and the 2D art that I enjoy so much. My findings were that digital animation combined the artistic style that I love and the storytelling of film in a way that intrigued me beyond any other career I had researched.

In all forms of art there is a natural inclination to explore and experiment within the medium. The resulting methods and formats can be seen as alternatives and additions to existing ones. I do not believe that, in terms of technical decisions, there is a superior style of film making that the industry progresses to on a set path. I agree with Arnheim’s statement that “there is no objection to the complete film as an alternative to the stage” if it exists with the other types of films (Arhheim, 186). In some cases advances in method and technique are used to fix the problems of technological limitations. In other cases these advances provide alternatives. The introduction of color is described by the latter. Color was introduced as an alternative to black and white movies but never completely replaced them and didn’t stop the use of black and white as an effective technique in modern cinema.
No matter who a person thinks invented the motion picture camera, whether it was Louis Lumiere or Thomas Edison, I'm sure they had no idea what it would become at the turn of the century. Motion pictures, has become an entertainment medium like no other. From Fred Ott's Sneeze to Psycho to Being John Malkovich, the evolution from moving pictures to a pure art form has been quite amazing.
